Astros Winter Leagues Weekly Recap

First off, my apologies for this not getting posted yesterday.  I randomly, and for no apparent reason, lost internet late Thursday night.  I didn't get internet back until yesterday morning, so I couldn't get it written up til last night.  Luckily, my wife has an IPhone and I could stay updated with what was getting discussed around here, but writing would have taken WAY too long.

After the jump, I have the past weeks performances for every winter league participant, except for a few, whose player pages would not come up for some unknown reason, so I couldn't see exactly what what was in the past week versus the rest of the season.

Star-divide

Jay Austin OF AFL-4-16, 3 BB, 4 SO, SB, CS-Much better week for Austin.  He didn't hit for any power, but I'll settle for him getting on base at a better rate.

Brandon Barnes OF AFL-7-21, 2B, 3B, 2 HR, 5 SO, SB-I think Barnes got added to the everyday roster with the injury to Shuckers.  He's responded well, especially with a 6 RBI game.

Edwin Bellorin C VWL-2-6, SO

Koby Clemens 1B AFL-5-16, 2B, HR, 2 BB, 6 SO, SB-You're killin me with those K's!

Kike Hernandez 2B PWL-2-5

Federico Hernandez C VWL-4-21, 2B, 3 BB, 5 SO

Drew Locke OF VWL-Wouldn't pull up.

Tommy Manzella SS DWL-2-15, 8 SO-Those strikeouts are very concerning!

Edwin Maysonet IF PWL-7-23, 2B, 4 SO

Ozzie Navarro-DNP

Freddy Parejo OF VWL-3-14, 2B, 5 SO

JB Shuck OF AFL-DNP

Wladimir Sutil SS VWL-Wouldn't pull up.

Jonathan Villar SS DWL-0-1, SO

Fernando Abad DWL-1 GS, 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO

Erick Abreu DWL-Wouldn't pull up.

Bubbue Buzachero PWL-4 G, 4 2/3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO

David Carpenter AFL-1 G, 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO

Luis Cruz PWL-1 GS, 4 1/3 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 3 BB, 3 SO

Enerio Del Rosario DWL-4 G, 2 2/3 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 2 BB

Gabriel Garcia VWL-3 G, 2 2/3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, SO

Kyle Greenwalt AFL-1 GS, 4 IP, 3 H, 3 SO-Nice outing for Kyle!  Let's hope that carries over to several more.

Arcenio Leon VWL-2 G, 2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 SO

David Martinez VWL-1 G, 1 2/3 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO

Matt Nevarez AFL-1 G, 1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 HR

Jailen Peguero DWL-3 G,3 2/3 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 4 SO

Polin Trinidad DWL-Wouldn't pull up.

Pat Urckfitz AFL-2 G, 3 IP, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO

hot!

As for Manzella it’s probably going to take 200 AB’s in the AFL for him to get comfortable and start hitting, like a light hitting shortstop.

Manzella

Apparently, Manzella is done. One of the Spanish-speaking DR reporters stated on Twitter last night that Tommy has Bronchitis and stomach problems and was sent back to the US.

Manzella

Thats bad luck. I like Manzella but he has to swing the bat a little better if he’s going to make it in the big leagues. Free Agent SS?

Looks like our AFL guys have done really well; Shuck, Clemens, and Barnes all have an AFL OPS of 750+. Austin has not done well, but he is still so young that not much was expected from him. Greenwalt, Nevarez, and Urckfitz all have good K:BB ratios; Carpenter hasn’t done that great, but also hasn’t gotten a ton of innings. Overall, I’m really pleased with their showing so far.
