Around SBN: Dana White Announces Koscheck vs. Hendricks for UFC on FOX

"Of course, it's kind of easy for McTaggart to scoop the Chron right now seeing as they don't currently have a baseball beat writer. Jose de Jesus Ortiz has been moved to the Houston Dynamo beat. It's rumored that soccer guy Bernardo Fallas will be taking over the Astros beat, but he doesn't seem to be actively covering the team at the moment."

That's quite a backhanded compliment to McTaggert.

In one stroke, he disses both McTaggert and JJO. He congratulates McTaggert for repeatedly beating the Chronicle and then sarcastically points out that it isn’t very hard if the Chronicle doesn’t have a baseball reporter.

Houston Press generally takes a holier-than-thou attitude toward the Chronicle, sometimes well deserved, sometimes not.

FWIW, I think Tag does as good a job as Footer ever did.

I think both of them fill their new roles well

I think Footer has found her calling, so to speak. And McTaggart is a great beat writer who now has, it seems, better access to the information he needs. I dig it and am well pleased with the results after a season or so.

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

it's usually well-deserved.

It’s pretty freaking sad when the free newspaper supported by ads for strip joints and “escorts” has better reporting than the city’s major newspaper.

yes, I recall many of those blogs by JJO this year. Two that stand out: the blog accusing the Astros of harboring/tolerating drug users—just a totally irresponsible bit of speculation; and that post season blog where he just seemed to go crazy in his attacks on Tal Smith and Ed Wade. I sometimes wondered if that last attack on Tal Smith, which a wildly flailing attack against the Astros’ front office, would burn his bridges with the Astros. It’s one thing for a beat writer to criticize the team he is covering, but at some point, if he makes it personal, it becomes difficult to cover the team.
