Surprising news out of Astros' camp: Expect a surprise call up from the minor leagues

Well isn't this a nice pick me up? Brian McTaggart tells us that Cecil Cooper has convinced Ed Wade to go against his philosophy towards September call ups, and that we should expect a surprise from the minors on Tuesday:

"I will say this, I think you'll be surprised," Cooper said. "That's all I'll say. That will give you something to chew on."

We already know 28 year old relief pitcher Billy Sadler is going to make the jump to the majors, but whom will join him? The article lists a handful of players, but if it were up to you, TCB public, which farm hand would be packing his bags for Houston?

I’m going to go with “Other” and say that Drew Locke will get a call-up. He’ll have to go on the 40-man roster after the season is over to keep him, and there’s a spot left…

I'd be surprised if

Koby Clemens is called up

I vote for Manzella, because

he has the most likely role in 2010 and it would be interesting to see what he can do as a big leaguer. I do wonder what it means that they outrighted Kata yesterday. I assumed Hampton was going to the 60 day DL to make room for Sadler on the 40-man roster. With Kata cleared there may be room for one more add on. Maybe Johnson?

I voted for Johnson because

he’s not on the 40 man. Manzella already being on the roster, it’d be pretty easy and not thaaaaaat surprising if he gets the call. CJ isnt on the roster and would be really getting his feet wet…so…I’d say CJ. Plus he’s on fire as of late – 4-7 tonight included.

That would be a surprise to me. But may be plausible. It’s the kind of call up which would attract attention and could attract fans to the ballpark. I voted for Manzella, but I really don’t put him in the “surprise” category. I expected him to be called up. He is on the 40 man and expected to contend for a ML slot next year. If Cooper considers him a “surprise,” then the Astros really are conservative on Sept. call ups. I think Johnson may be a player Cooper would want to call up. He doesn’t seem enamored with the nicked up Blum and Keppinger at 3d.

everitt-like SS

Please what is it with you guys wanting another everitt…….I can live with Tejada…but manzella…pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez…….how about a hitting 3rd baseman(c.Johnson)…then we don’t need to move Tejada……i’m tired of light hitting ss’s…..Dickie Thon was the last hitting ss the astros had…if memory serves me….some of the older guys here…correct me if I’m wrong…was not he, in his time THE premiere offensive ss….and then he was beaned by mike torrez……c’mon guys….not another everitt!!!!!!!!

ok

first off, welcome to the blog, glad you’re here…

second, manzella’s defensive skills will translate to the major league level a lot easier than chris johnson’s all or nothing plate approach will..cj strikes out entirely too much and displays little to no patience at this point in his career. i understand you’re “not wanting another everitt”, but believe it or not, adam everett made up for his lack of skill at the plate by being a stellar defensive shortstop. in our world series season of 2005, adam was a top fifteen shortstop despite being paid a scant $400,000.

if manzella can approach adam’s defensive output, he has the potential to be an even more effective player since his minor league numbers lead me to believe that he can at least be passable on offense. he’s not hanley ramirez, but is cheap, young-ish, and skilled defensively. giving away outs has been a problem with the astros this season, and having manzella in the lineup would lessen this problem going into 2010.
