Definitely. What are the chances that Bazardo is on the 2010 opening day roster?

by jmike on Sep 28, 2009 6:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Berkman walks but is picked off by Hamels. That is the only action for the Astros in the top of the 9th.

Berkman makes a high leg step move to the umpire when he is out at 2d base. I think he is trying to illustrate a balk move.

Bazardo’s first pitch….hard it line drive by Rollins, single.

after a steal, move up on a ground out, and a sac fly by Utley…Phillies lead 1-0.

picture perfect sequence by the Phillies’ offense by the way. Each hitter playing his role…like a well oiled machine.

Have Astros won this month

when JR Towles was the catcher?

by Joe in Birmingham on Sep 28, 2009 6:42 PM CDT reply actions

They haven’t won very much this month with ANYBODY at catcher. But I can’t recall any winning games recently with Towles at catcher. Towles hasn’t looked good, either behind the plate or at the plate, this month.

by clack on Sep 28, 2009 6:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Broadcasters said that Clark told Towles that he needs to realize his position in the lineup, and should try not to be so selective at the plate.

My initial reaction is to cringe at advice like that to a young hitter whose best feature in the minors has been OBP. On the other hand, Towles has looked passive, maybe even a little gunshy at the plate, since coming back to the majors. So, I can understand why they would tell him this. Maybe he needs to become more aggressive to get back on track.

it seems like the Braves’ best chance is at the wild card, no? Phillies come into this game with a magic number for clinching of 3.

Astros score 1 run on Keppinger single, but wierd sequence....

Berkman came home but missed the bag; catcher noticed that ump didn’t give safe and chased Berkman in the on deck circle area, with Berkman going around in cricles like he was playing tag on the playground. When Berkman came in to the plate, I was thinking that he made a mistake by not sliding. I didn’t realize he failed to touch the base.

Pirates drubbed the Dodgers today, denying LA again their chance to clinch the playoffs. Ex-Dodger 3d baseman Andy LaRoche with 2 HRs and 13 total bases.

My discussion topic for the night

Ben Maller of Fox Sports does a daily rumor page where he links to articles and then gives “Ben’s take” on the content. Last week there was an article about the Rays possibly wanting to move Carl Crawford. His take was something along the lines of Crawford would look good in an Astros uni and that would sell some tickets. Another article came out today that said the Rays may hang on to him and his take was.. “Astros would love to bring Crawford home.” Personally I would love an OF of Crawford, Bourn and Pence….if we had a productive power hitting, RBI machine at 3rd base or Pence could step up with RISP and be a 100 RBI guy. By replacing Carlos, you lose the power and about 30-40 (20 in a great year for Crawford). What is ya’lls take?

by Astrofan on Sep 28, 2009 8:22 PM CDT reply actions

Where would Carlos Lee go?

His No-trade contract is a major stumbling block.

Any chance Lee became the third baseman??

To be continued

Carl Crawford to Houston rumors were there last year too (or the year before)

I thought he woud be a great Astro. I have not followed him this year.

Yeah thats what I was thinking about as well

Lee used to be a 3rd baseman. He hasn’t played there in forever though. Also the Rays need a DH. A Lee/Crawford trade would benefit both teams and Carlos could play for a contender as he fits one of the major needs for the Rays since Burrell didn’t work out. I just don’t know if he would go to Tampa since he has his ranch around Houston and does the livestock show.
Crawfords numbers:
.308 14HR 27 2B 8 3B 67RBI 59SB .367OBP. I’m drooling thinking about a lineup starting off with Bourn, Crawford, Berkman, Pence..etc

by Astrofan on Sep 28, 2009 8:39 PM CDT up reply actions

of course, I would love a Crawford for Lee trade....

But there is no way…absolutely no way…that I see the Rays making that trade. The Rays can’t afford Carlos Lee’s salary. If the Rays trade Crawford, one of the main reasons will be to get rid of his salary, which is large for the Rays but a pittance compared to Carlos Lee.

by clack on Sep 28, 2009 9:23 PM CDT up reply actions

The Yankees would be the best chance to move Lee

Since they’re in the market for a DH and can obviously afford Lee if they want him badly enough. He probably wouldn’t approve the trade though.

JD made a good observation...

He said this game is good example of why you shouldn’t bet on baseball games. By every right the Phillies looked like sure winners before the game started. I noted the mismatch of starting pitchers at the start of the thread. Joe mentioned that ESPN gave the Astros only a 22% chance to win this game. And the Astros win it, going away.
