Wandy with a full blown crisis in the 2d inning....

bases loaded and 1 out. He induced a K and a grounder to 3d.

Wandy had some BB issues. I didn’t watch it closely enough to know whether it was due to the ump or Wandy.

by clack on Sep 27, 2009 1:32 PM CDT reply actions

Wandy could break 200 IP today

with a sub 3 ERA. Only 64 ER given up on the year so far. He’s got a chance for 15 wins this year… well, not really since the Astros don’t have an offense.

by entropic soul on Sep 27, 2009 1:42 PM CDT reply actions

He could also get 200 strikeouts this season

I hope they give him a chance to make the milestone… since the next one is his last start, they shouldn’t worry too much about pitch count. He’d have to strike out ten though, so it will be a tall order.

Perhaps they could let him come out of the bullpen in the last game?

It’s unbelievable that Maysonet finally gets a start at 2d base. It’s hard to think of a player who has been so well buried on the bench for about a month and a half. Perhaps this is one benefit of Clark as the manager. I don’t think Cooper ever intended to start Maysonet unless everybody on the infield was injured.

Was just about to post this, but I'll put it under yours...

How many games has Manzella started this year? Isn’t this the guy we’re looking at possibly being our SS next year?

by entropic soul on Sep 27, 2009 1:46 PM CDT up reply actions

My recollection is that he has only started 1 game...

I thought I read something about the Astros making some sort of commitment to Tejada that he would get sufficient playing time to give him an opportunity to be the ML leader in doubles this season.

Wandy sparking a rally!

Single.
“Do I have to do everything myself?!!”

by entropic soul on Sep 27, 2009 1:47 PM CDT reply actions

He knows he has to take the offense in his own hands :p

If you replay this whole inning, but make Wandy strike out instead of singling… then we score 0.

Earlier this summer

someone referenced Roger Clemens telling a pitcher his enitre focus should be on keepign the other team from scoring, and he should not do anything that takes away from that mission (including battig practice).

That sounded odd to me. When I think of Clemens, I reca he meant business when he batted too.

Seems like good advice.

It’d be nice if they could do them both, but oh well.

by entropic soul on Sep 27, 2009 2:10 PM CDT up reply actions

as I recall....

Clemens gave that advice to Brandon Backe before the playoffs began. I think there was a feeling that Backe spent so much time on thinking about his hitting and trying to beat out infield hits that he would lose focus on his pitching. Backe, of course, was a guy who was ultra-hyper. And I think Clemens was emphasizing to him that his job in the playoffs is to keep the other team from scoring. So, don’t expend all your energy running hard to first base….

by clack on Sep 27, 2009 2:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Where is Brandon Backe today?

Is his career over or will he pitch again in 2010?

don't know.

He was considering arm surgery. My recollection is that Dr. Andrews gave him a second opinion that rest and rehab would get him past his arm injury. I don’t know if he is just focusing on rehab or what.

Astros score run on Berkman’s slow roller to short. I was afraid it would be a DP, but it was hit too slowly and the Reds could only get the runner at 2d.

by clack on Sep 27, 2009 1:51 PM CDT reply actions

Carlos Lee gets another run in on a grounder to 3d base.

That groundout RBI looked like a double in the making, but the Reds’ third baseman made a terrific play on a well hit ball.

Third base man went from sprawled on the ground

to leaping one foot off the ground in the throwing position in .005 seconds (approximately)

Pence has almost 1/2 as many walks as Berkman, which may be the most telling difference between the players.

It’s worth noting that Berkman has about 100 fewer at bats than Pence.

Cardinals clinched the Central last night

St Louis will be the only NL Central team in the post -season this year.

did anyone here...

predict Cards as the division winners at the beginning of the season? I sure didn’t.

by BTastros on Sep 27, 2009 2:04 PM CDT up reply actions

doubtful...I didn't.

Of course, I didn’t realize that Carpenter would make a full comeback. I thought that was unlikely.

by clack on Sep 27, 2009 2:06 PM CDT up reply actions

I also figured Cubs to win, and I’d be surprised if many thought otherwise.

I wouldn’t say I picked the Astros for the wild card, but that was my hope. Oh well.

The sweep of the Cardinals was definitely the highlight of the season. Too bad it didn’t portend what I hoped it would then.

by BTastros on Sep 27, 2009 2:15 PM CDT up reply actions

we can always ask "what ifs..." about what could have been after the sweep..

of the Cards. But I think a combination of extremely poor depth, injuries, and Coop’s mishandling of the bullpen all combined to bury the Astros’ season after that series.
The Astros lost Wandy, Roy O, and Berkman at roughly the same time. The Astros’ depth wasn’t good enough to deal with that. And it would be their bad luck that the effects of Cooper’s bullpen mismanagement would come home to roost at the same time.

by clack on Sep 27, 2009 2:24 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree

But I did have the brief hope then that the team was, somehow, going to just make it work. You’re right that the odds were stacked heavily against us.

Maybe Quintero is catching the Matsui bug……low power hitters showing some power.

by clack on Sep 27, 2009 2:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Quintero homerun

His fourth of the season. Considering how few opporunities he has had, that’s a good number.

Wandy is up to 80 picthes...

Better be careful or won’t break 200 IP today

by entropic soul on Sep 27, 2009 2:14 PM CDT reply actions

Wait...

Four more outs. :p
He needs 6.1 innings to get to 200 today.

by entropic soul on Sep 27, 2009 2:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Matsui missed today's game because of the flu, but...

He’s broken his MLB career for starts. He’s got 120. Is previous high was 11 back with the Mets in 2004, I think. Too bad he sucked this year.

by entropic soul on Sep 27, 2009 2:19 PM CDT reply actions

Maysonet almost got there!

and the ball was ten feet on the shortstop side of second. Maysonet was closer than Tejada.

Uh oh!

POWER Q to bat with the bases loaded!

by entropic soul on Sep 27, 2009 2:43 PM CDT reply actions

Q is the perfect DP candidate and he kills the inning with a DP.

Awhile back I showed the Astros’ players GDP% relative to opportunities….and Quintero was worst by far (something like close to 50% of his DP opportunities turn into to two outs).

He continues to do things right when he plays.

Surely Astros must have the highest GIDP to runs scored in the history of baseball.

So close.
He should have one more game though.

Drayton is so good at BS.

We’ve got a good core of players, and we will add players in the off season to get us back on track.

by clack on Sep 27, 2009 2:49 PM CDT reply actions

whew

I was getting worried. It seemed like we’d gotten off track from our past championship ways.

by BTastros on Sep 27, 2009 3:01 PM CDT up reply actions

you think...

that’s being good at BS?

by BTastros on Sep 27, 2009 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions

BS is meaningless verbiage which is intended to cover up the truth. (Or at least that’s my definition.) That seems like a good job of qualifying for that definition.

by clack on Sep 27, 2009 3:06 PM CDT up reply actions

sure, I agree it's BS

but I think good BS is at least somewhat convincing.

I don’t think there are any Astros fans who think we’re just on the verge of a championship.

Dave Clark

Bll Brown and J.D. DeShaies pumping up Dave Clark today.

Yet when I read posts and articles about the Astros next manager I sense no enthusiasm for Dave Clark. In fact, he’s almost a non-consideration.

Anyone sense a groundswell for Dave Clark?

Astros fan for life

by Joe in Birmingham on Sep 27, 2009 2:55 PM CDT reply actions

Sense a groundswell for Clark? No. The most positive thing I’ve heard is that the players like him. But, I’ve got to think that the way the Astros have played under his short managing stint won’t help him. That’s probably unfair, in the sense that a short period at the end of a meaningless season isn’t much to judge. But my guess is that Clark needed to get McLane’s attention with some good team play.

by clack on Sep 27, 2009 3:00 PM CDT up reply actions

I think...

or rather, I hope, that it’s just a matter of treating him nicely and respectfully during a short tenure at the end of a tough season.

by BTastros on Sep 27, 2009 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions

and...

I don’t mean that as any disrespect to Dave Clark. But I think it’s got to be best for the organization to bring in somebody new from the outside.

by BTastros on Sep 27, 2009 3:10 PM CDT up reply actions

probably right.

By the way, one of the national sports writers (maybe Heyman?) recently said he learned that Manny Acta would be among those likely to be interviewed by Astros.
