Cardinals may clinch NL Central title tonight

if Cardinals win AND Cubs lose. Both teams are in scoreless games so far.

It'd take a 2-9 finish

Cardinals (tonight) , Reds(3) , Phillies(3) Mets(4)

maybe

Hope not

Of course, they may reach 80 wins

questioning y norris is bunting…

maybe he reads this blog?

I heard that…but I don’t quite understand it. In my mind it’s hard to question a sac bunt by a pitcher unless the pitcher is a really good hitter (like Hampy or Backe). Most pitchers are likely to K if they swing away.

One out already and runner on second already

Not much benefit. to moving the runner to third with two outs was his thought

yeah, fairly minimal benefit (unless the sac bunt turns into a base hit, like it did in this case). The pitcher would have to be really bad hitter (like maybe Moehler) to sell me on the sac bunt in that situation. However, some managers would still view moving the runner to 3d in that situation to be a productive out.

Reds lead Pirates 8-2

Looks like Astros must win tonight or be all alone in next to last place

Very nice double play

With the runner on first running, Smoltz bunts down the first base line.
Berkman in what looked like an ill-advised throw goes to second to get the runner out there. A quick relay throw back to first gets Smoltz for the double play.

Smoltz looks good. This is another case where FIP and peripheral stats (while Smoltz was with the Red Sox) have proven to be a better indicator of Smoltz’s ability than the actual pitching results.
