Cooper fired!

Hey guys looks like the 7 game losing streak our wish come true. I just got an ESPN text that reads

"The Houston Astros have fired Cecil Cooper, he was 171-170 since taking over in 2007." Tough news for Coop but he had to know it was coming. Especially after a 7 game losing streak this late in the season. I'm glad to see something was finally done about it. Maybe now we can find someone that will have the respect of the club house and can stay here for a while. I just got this text while I was snoozing between classes so no link yet, but I'll post one as soon as I find one. Dave Clark takes over on the interim. I sure hope we actually do a search for a manager this time.

I'm on board the Ausmus train

haha its a stretch but he already knows most of the guys on the team so they have his respect. And it seems likely he wouldn’t abuse the pitching staff like Coop.

I can't wait

for the Astros to play well for the last couple of weeks and Clark keeping the job…

I bet Clark will play the young guys at least half the time

“Decisions like this are never easy, but we believe that a change in direction on the field is in order. By making the move today, we will have the ability to evaluate other facets of our operation as we move into the offseason.” -Ed Wade

If I have the pulse of the Astros front office right the straw that broke the camel’s back was Cooper’s insistence on playing the veterans instead. Guy was way too hard-headed for his own good… or the team’s

I also wonder if Cooper’s attempt to blame Wade & those above (speculating a bit here) for Blum’s anger over not starting against Suppan (whom Blum had a .570 BA against) pissed off the Astros’ higher ups. As I said, I’m speculating, but it seemed like Cooper was trying to turn the veterans’ anger about playing call ups against Wade. It seemed so phony, particularly since Wade chose to play no call ups the next day.

My Read (FWIW)

The way I see this is that the ’Stro’s are doing Cecil a favor by letting him go while his winning percentage is still above .500. No way is the team going to do better than two games under .500 the rest of the season, especially with Roy O. done, and Coop was surely going to get the boot in the off-season anyway. I wouldn’t necessarily call it a classy move by Drayton/Ed, but if he never gets another manager job again, at least he’ll show that .501 or .502 (depends how you do your round-off) winning percentage instead of something in the upper .490’s.
