Coming to Houston next May...

I have a question about the ball park and a couple other things to ask.

Star-divide

When the schedule for 2010 came out last week, I was hoping the Rays would be at home in St. Pete on the weekend of May 22nd, as it's my 40th birthday. But they're going to be in Houston so we're thinking about putting together a weekend trip to go see the game and some of the sights in Houston.

So my question about the ball park is what section (from about $45 and down in price) would be best to watch a game? I prefer the outfield or along the RF line but I'll be happy just to go and enjoy a game in a park I've never been to before.

Also, aside from the game, what is on the "must do" list when one is in Houston? I've only been through Houston twice, once on the way to Air Force basic training in San Antonio and the other driving to Florida. At any rate, we're looking to put a trip together so any advice you guys have would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I like the Terrace Deck pretty well

We’ve got season tickets up there, behind home plate. It’s probably the best overall view of the action, although you’re not going to get foul balls—up to you whether that’s a plus or minus.

I would avoid the bullpen and mezannine seats as you can’t see the scoreboard and it’s harder to see the action too. If you like the outfield you might try the Crawford Boxes, that can be a fun experience… might catch a home run ball.

kemah is a city/town on the gulf that has a ton of amusements, things to do, would be a nice evening
-hermann park/museum districts
first class facilities, pretty architecture, nice artsy/young/hip/urban crowd
spend an evening downtown lots of nice restaurants, good opportunity to see a show (music/play/etc)
big water park in galveston (it’s a drive, but so is everything in texas)
-space center houston
cool if you have kids
galleria cool if you have a girlfriend/wife
st. arnold’s brewery tour go and drink beer with 200 of your closest friends for five bucks- great if you’re going with beer drinkers
-the zoo is fun if it’s not overwhelmingly hot

hope this helps! enjoy your trip.

when you write something like this:

-Houston is Texas' best city-

It comes out like this:

Houston is Texas’ best city

Oh, and, GatorSphere, the only real advice I can give you (beyond what HLP has already said) is:

  1. If you fly into the city, rent a car
  2. Check out houstonist.com, houstonpress.com, or any of the many visitor’s websites out there a few weeks before you visit. There will definitely be many shows, concerts, festivals, etc. going on when you come. And they’ve got good listings for good local food.
  3. Mexican food, barbecue, steak and seafood are the city’s specialties, but Houston’s an astoundingly diverse place, and we’ve got some really great ethnic specialty restaurants.

Your friendly neighborhood Dream Shake mod.

It's hard to find a bad seat at MMP...

I think I’ve sat in just about every section at one time or another so here’s my two cents:
Be careful getting seats down the 1st base/RF line. Had season tickets there last year (sec.132) and gave them up because (a) the farther out you get, the more you are facing the outfield and you spend most of the game turned to your left and (b) you are facing directly into the afternoon or setting sun. Better (and cheaper) to just get an outfield seat. Oddly enough, the view from the seats on the opposite side of the stadium (sec. 105 -107) is pretty great and one of my favorite areas to sit. I’ve sat in the Terrace Deck seats mentioned earlier and agree that they might be the best view in the park. Feels like you are right over home plate. View Deck (just above) behind home plate is also good. If anyone in your group is short (like me) beware the 1st row as the railing blocked part of my view. Love those areas, though.
Where ever you sit make sure you take a walk around the main concourse and especially down “Home Run Alley”. You’ll get a real feel for the park.
