Rivera gets up to go, Blum starts unhooking his protector, Gallardo starts walking – all almost instantaneously and the ump follows with the ring up a moment later.

Paulino will need to do some work in the offseason
In rough order of importance, he needs to work on adding a little sink to his fastball, keeping it down in the strike zone, and hiding the ball a little better. I suspect he would have a lot more success if he did at least two of those three things.
Right now—and this happens in his successful starts too—he has a strong tendency to give up the long ball because his fastball is so straight, and for whatever reason, so “seeable” to the hitters… and he has a tendency to leave it up in the zone.

I think the balls and strikes count got screwed up in that at bat. I’m pretty sure Prince got 4 strikes.

I’m probably confused by the game indicator window on the broadcast, but gameday might be adjusted. There was definitely some confusion as the ump and the Astros bench spent time jawing.

Quintero doubled
Many TCB Commenters seemingly expect Quintero will not return to Astros next season.
I think there’s a very good chance he returns.

The Chicken Runs at Midnight
I tuned back in when I got to the office. JD was in the middle of a story about the Chicken runs at midnight and how Craig Counnel was called Chickenman.
I googled the story and found the following link. The story is far down the page (the last third of the article) but worth reading

Byrdak issues way too many walks in crucial situation. And that is very big problem for a guy who is used as LOOGY, often only facing one batter.

Cubs related: Cubs send Milton Bradley home for the season
Cubs have had enough of Milton Bradley and are sending him home for the season:
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/10100700/Cubs-suspend-OF-Bradley-for-rest-of-season
I find this story so fascinating because in the preseason predictions at TCB I said Cubs should win easily but I could see them falter because among other reasons Milton Bradley is a walking timebomb that will explode under the media glare of Chicago. He did several times during the season; but this is even more dramatic than I could foresee.

lotsa discussion of him and the media over at BCB
I never read anything all that big of a deal. Supposedly Paul Sullivan makes things up, but what it was I don’t know.
Interesting that Cards fans came over and claimed that he would do fine in St. Louis as the media would just ignore him.
by ol Pete on Sep 20, 2009 8:46 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think Bradley can succeed in a lower heat pot, like he did in Texas, but it wasn’t hard to foresee that Bradley + Cubs media/fans would be risky. Before the season began, I suggested that Bradley better get off to a good start or else he would come under scrutiny that could send him off the edge. And he didn’t get off to a good start…and the simmering pot kept getting hotter and hotter.
The funny thing is that the comments which led to his suspension aren’t nearly as bad, IMO, as some of the other stuff he has pulled in Chicago. In fact, there is a good deal of truth to his remark about knowing why the Cubs haven’t won for 100 years.
