Astros vs Brewers coverage, Astros vs Brewers preview, Brew Crew Ball

Two veterans face off to determine...nothing, really. Third place in the NL Central, I guess. If Michael Bourn runs absolutely wild he may get to 60 stolen bases....So there's that!

1-2-3 inning for Suppan in the 1st. Broadcasters tell us that Blum was angry because he wasn’t allowed to start this game, given his .517 batting average against Suppan. Cooper told the media that Blum has every right to be angry.

I wonder if Johnson is playing because McLane asked for the call ups to get time.

by ol Pete on Sep 19, 2009 6:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t know about McLane, but I think Wade told Cooper to play the call ups more.

Right, bad memory. If only rebooting would help.

Fatboy Lee makes a good running catch on Fielder’s line drive to LF corner. Saves runs.

by clack on Sep 19, 2009 6:22 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

now Lee doubles to start off the 2d.

Suckin’ wind as he arrives. Looked like he let go an F bomb when he got there.

by ol Pete on Sep 19, 2009 6:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

ha!

didn’t know about the F-bomb. but he definitely looked like he was running out of gas. he looked toward Hart, hoping that maybe he would bobble the ball and let him slow down more. Carlos was lucky that Hart’s throw was far off 2d.

Chris Johnson with RBI. Not a good swing, but the ball bounces slowly toward shortstop, and that allows Lee to score. Johnson out at 1st.

Casey to 2nd on the E6

Good hustle by Towles but can’t coral the ball before it goes in the dugout.

Richard Justice’s blog had a quote from Tal Smith today. After seeing T.J. Steele play, Smith said that Steele is the best 5 tool player in the Astros’ system since Cesar Cedeno. I’m not sure what to make of that. Tal Smith has certainly been around a long time, but I don’t know if that was hyperbole.

Kaz Matsui with a bid for a HR...but it's ruled a double.

Hard to tell from replays whether it hit above or below yellow line. Matsui has been hitting some long balls lately.

by clack on Sep 19, 2009 6:54 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Replay here was clear – hit just below the line. Only reason it wasn’t a HR was trajectory – hit hard – right after the tv guys were talking about Suppan striking out the side.

by ol Pete on Sep 19, 2009 7:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

ol Pete, did you see the Cardinals’ game vs. the Cubs? Ryan hit what at best was a double, and should have been caught. But the Cubs outfielder, Scales, was awkward in reaching for the ball, and it bounced off his glove and over the bullpen wall for a HR.

by clack on Sep 19, 2009 6:56 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah

I felt sorry for the guy. And then later he slid around trying to make a play.

Social obligations are calling me. Thankfully it includes dinner.

wow SBN chopped my post

I felt sorry for the guy. He had an awkward slide later in the game in the outfield later as well.

Social obligations call – thankfully it includes dinner.

For most of the game, it appeared that fluke HR would win the game, but the Cards blew the save in the 9th, but the Cards won the game in the bottom of the 9th off Marmol.

I don’t understand how these other teams hit Marmol. Marmol is almost unhittable for the Astros.

I spent some time watching the UT-Texas Tech game. And I come back to the baseball game and it is the 6th inning and still 1-1 tie.

I live in Austin about 5 minutes from the UT stadium. If the Horns win, I fully expect craziness around here. In any event, win or lose, I’ll stay off the streets to avoid the crush of cars. I had to stand in line at my nearby ATM machine at 5 pm for about 10 minutes. College kids in orange in front of me, all on their cell phones, and as best I can tell they were busy coordinating their keg deliveries.

Massive HR by Hunter Pence in the 7th....

hit to R-CF into highest deck there.

2-1 Astros.

Chris Johnson with his 2d hit of his career. Not a thing of beauty, but he beat it into ground toward 3d base and the ball hopped over the 3d baseman. If I recall, Johnson’s first hit was a blooper.

by clack on Sep 19, 2009 7:58 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

First hit was a blooper to right

Johnson has been unimpressive at the plate.

If this is the best he’s got, his future looks bleak. I keep hoping he’ll break out and become a good hitter

by clack on Sep 19, 2009 8:12 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

now bases loaded with no outs….

nice job Byrdak….

Gervacio comes into the game in a bad situation.

Walk

After the Bloop single, Tim Byrdak relieved Moehler. Byrdak having a tough go of it.

Moehler pitched effectively

but because he gave up a bloop single to start the seventh and was fololwed by ineffective relievers he will get stuck with the loss (if the Astros lose)

why does he get the loss? the Astros were ahead when he put a runner on.

by clack on Sep 19, 2009 8:27 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's right - I forgot Pence's homerun!

Moehler gets a no-decision

I feel better. Moehler pitched too well to be saddled with the loss.

yeah, I suppose so. Astros have been snakebit in this inning. As JD said, you would think one of these balls would be hit toward a fielder.

by clack on Sep 19, 2009 8:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tejada makes almost great play

running behind second to the second base side of the base. Only reason it was not a great play was the runner beat the throw to first.

then another hit by Gerut up the middle.

Astros’ luck isn’t good right now.

Maybe I praised Valeverde too quickly

(I’ve ony seen two hits and the batters were lucky on both)

Valverde in 2010

TCB commenters disagree amongst themselves; but I think Astros must try their best to sign Valverde again

Braun got the third hit - hard grounder to right

Hunter Pence with hard accurate throw holds the runner at third

That was an odd maneuver by Cooper to bring Valverde into the game in the 8th. Better to wait until the 9th for his work. As it stands, Valverde threw too many pitches in the 8th—stressful pitches as JD pointed out—and will either be exhausted for the next game if he pitches the 9th, or else will have to come out of the game.

no Astro pitcher will be needed in the ninth

ASTROS LOSE 7-2

Lose antother road series. Astros have not won a road series since before the Fourth of July.

I’m afraid to look to see if the Reds are closing in.
