Astros vs Brewers coverage, Astros vs Brewers preview, Brew Crew Ball

A couple teams playing out the string meet up in Milwaukee tonight. Chris Johnson gets the start at third, Towles is catching and perhaps the most important/most up in the air piece of our 2010 puzzle is starting. This game has some importance, people. Oh yea, and the Brew Crew do the synchronized walk off home run celebration like no other team...should be fun.

I've been watching but not on the board....

while I ate a chalupa plate from my neighborhood mexican restaurant.

Some thoughts so far:

Lance Berkman says, “Coop, you think I should drop down to the No. 5 lineup spot…well then take that!” as he hits a no doubter HR.

Tejada says: “Manzella, you don’t think I can play shortstop? Well, watch this.”
Tejada had a spectacular play at short in the 1st to start a DP.One of the better defensive plays all year. When you see those plays, you wonder why he should move to 3d base. But that’s just the way Tejada is….he is losing range, but he can still make the spectacular play now and then.

Chuck Norris, er, Bud Norris strides off the hill after striking out Hardy for out no. 3 to end the 2d.

Stares at Hardy – reminds me a bit of the Cards who do that a lot

Did they just say that Bourn was down the line to 1st in 3.1 seconds? They said that Mantle was 3.9 seconds.

Bourn is on first on an infield single between the pitcher and 1st base.

by clack on Sep 18, 2009 7:50 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Bourn is out trying to steal 3d base. It looked on the replay that Bourn was in safe.

Called out at 3rd – looked safe on the replay here

Looks like the ump will call low strikes. If Norris can keep his FB low, he should be OK tonight.

Wow, Towles didn’t look good on that play. Norris with a really wild pitch, and Towles just stood there while the base runner took 2 bases.

So, Pete.

Disappointed by the Brewers’ season, is this basically what you expected, or did you think they’d be in a lot worse position right now?

by Only_A_Lad on Sep 18, 2009 8:08 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Definitely disappointed. The pitching didn’t hold up. I don’t think their situation was all that different than a lot of teams, but they didn’t have anybody in AAA to bring up to fill in. Add in a bunch of short starts in the heart of the season and a pretty good bullpen got worn out.

Next year!

Bud's going to be good if he can keep this kind of strikeout rate up.

I wasn’t a believer at first, but I’m excited about him. It will be fun to see how he does in a full season next year.

I think we could have a pretty good rotation next year

Witha healthy Roy, Wandy, Norris, Paulino and Moehler. Possible Wright if he does well this winter. I’ve always wanted to see WW as a starter.

In case your interested, you can twitter with Roger Clemens. You can read more at this thread at BBTF.

by clack on Sep 18, 2009 8:16 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Some people on the BBTF thread wonder if it’s really Roger Clemens. But it got in the NY Daily News, so it’s got to be him, right? The fact that his spokesman quoted in the Daily News asked to be anonymous doesn’t add to the confidence.

Nice overhead shot of it here – he was motoring.

That’s what I thought when he connected. I feared the dreaded phrase “first big league home run.”

by ol Pete on Sep 18, 2009 8:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

one thing Bourn still needs to work on

is his strikeouts. Don’t get me wrong he’s been great this year but hes struck out 119 times. If he cuts back on those, he puts the ball in play more and most likely gets on base more.

by Astrofan on Sep 18, 2009 8:31 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes . . . but

Don’t the Astros want him to improve his power, which usually increases the srikeouts

when I think of Bourn hitting for more power...

I think of more doubles, which I think he can do, because he is good line drive hitter. But I think he is in trouble if he tries to become a HR hitter.

by clack on Sep 18, 2009 8:36 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can't see why they would want that

I mean I suppose they could hope he turns into a Jose Reyes type….(small guy that can pull it down the lines) At MMP hes got a short left field line that could benefit him but I think your best plan for Bourn is for him to hit em on the ground and shoot doubles down the lines and into the gaps, and run into 5-10ish homers.

by Astrofan on Sep 18, 2009 8:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just noticed i said left field

I meant Bourn has a short right field that could benefit him. My bad.

by Astrofan on Sep 18, 2009 8:45 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He has done that his whole career. I doubt that he can change a whole lot…at least, it’s unusual at this stage of a player’s career to change his stripes with respect to K rate. It is Bourn’s weakness, and probably will keep him from being a consistent .300 hitter.

I was hoping Bud could have a quick inning

and make it into the 6th. But Felipe lopez has been the doom of him tonight.

by Astrofan on Sep 18, 2009 8:40 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah, some pitch count troubles.

It’s a good learning experience to face some of these tough Brewers hitters like Braun though.

I’m a college student at home on a Friday night :( but I’ve been feeling a bit sick today so I figured I’d stay home. But I’ve got the first home football game tomorrow night so it should be a pretty good Saturday.

Gervacio gets 2 whiffs....

Sammy can’t do better than that in the inning. Everytime I see Gervacio pitch, I get the impression he doesn’t know for sure where the ball is going. I think it’s because he looks so off-balance when he releases the ball, and frequently the balls outside the strike zone are way outside. If I’m a batter, that probably isn’t a good feeling.

Passed ball or wild pitch advances runner to 3d. Towles looked sluggish on that play. He hasn’t been impressive behind the plate today.

Game tied....Lopez RBI single up the middle.

Towles’ less than stellar play has been a factor on both Brewers’ runs scored.

ball seemed to bounce past Tejada....

he may have thought he had to stop and corral a high bounce. In any event, the ball went into shallow CF and wouldn’t have scored the runner from 2d…hence, Towles’ passed ball was a factor.

I didn't see how the run scored....

The box score said that Wright faced one batter and had 1 ball, 3 strikes, and gave up a hit and run…..something’s wrong with that line.
