I like Manzella starting behind Bazardo....

Bazardo (if he is pitching right) should produce a lot of groundballs…so we will see Manzella in the field. Also Manzella is familiar with Bazardo, which should help out his defensive play.

by clack on Sep 16, 2009 6:27 PM CDT reply actions

Hit by Votto with 2 outs.

Manzella faced an Adam Everett Meets Carlos Lee moment on the very first play of the Astros’ defensive 1st inning. Manzella, Keppinger and Lee all running hard after a pop up. Manzella got to it, and he showed pretty good range doing it.

I think Bazardo got the third out...

a door to door salesman came to my door and I missed what happened. Bazardo had been in a long battle with Rolen. As I watch Bazardo, my impression is that Bazardo’s success may depend on whether major league batters will swing at the diving sinker he throws. It’s possible that major league hitters will be tougher to entice with that pitch. If they don’t swing, Bazardo racks up lots of balls and BBs….which he has shown somewhat so far.

WTF! Pence! A stupid baserunning move.

With no outs, Hunter hit a sharp liner off the wall in LF. He had an easy double. For some strange reason, Pence tried to go for a triple and was out by 2 strides.

+1

How many stupid base running errors has he made this season?

by Astrofan on Sep 16, 2009 7:01 PM CDT up reply actions

I think JD didn’t know what to say, in terms of explaining Pence’s decision. At first he didn’t say anything and then he came up with the lamest excuse: “maybe Pence was a victim of the cooler weather and was feeling too frisky.”

by clack on Sep 16, 2009 7:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Carlos Lee with line shot HR.

It’s a solo job, instead of a 2 run HR, because of Hunter’s stupidity.

by clack on Sep 16, 2009 7:01 PM CDT reply actions

Carlos Lee hit it almost as far as Matsui did

too bad Hunter Pence didn’t stop at second

Hr, Out, Hr, Out, HR, out…does manzella continue with a HR next inning to start the trend again?

I suspect that it is a bad sign for Bazardo when he gives up so many balls in the air.

I thought maybe a ground rule for this game

was that only homeruns counted in the score. I guess I was wrong.

He mentioned that Cooper said he’d play Tommy in at least 1 game a series except maybe the St. Louis and Philadelphia series.

JD mentioned that those races have already been decided and he didn’t understand the thinking of not playing Tommy since the Astros will not be playing spoiler for that series.

Sheesh, Reds screw up a suicide squeeze—pop up bunt—and Bazardo can’t get to it before it falls and then mishandles the ball and gets no outs.

by clack on Sep 16, 2009 7:36 PM CDT reply actions

everything went wrong

and if Bazardo caught it , it woud have been a double play

Why so stuck on Stubbs, Joe? There are a lot of players I wish were on the Astros’ team.

by clack on Sep 16, 2009 7:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Every time I notice him he does good

I noticed him first watching a Texas Longhorn game (either on TV or a gamecast).

I recall writing or thibnking i hoped th Astros would draft them. He’s awinner.

Then I learned Astros did but refused to pay higher than slot money and Stubbs went to Texas, but I hoped Astrso would get him on a second try

They didn’t but here he is pounding the Astros every opportuntiy he gets.

yeah, that decision to bow to Selig sticks in the Astros’ craw. Why did Drayton do that? Other teams tell Selig to take his slot and go stick it.

by clack on Sep 16, 2009 7:55 PM CDT up reply actions

He may look good when you see him.

But so far, all he’s shown is power. He’s got a lot of strike outs and a OBP of around .300 in the Majors. He could do better, since his minor league numbers are good, but that’s gamble. He can run, but he gets caught stealing way too much. He’s almost as bad as Pence (ok, I kid – no one is THAT bad.) And he’s a CF, so you would have to replace Lee (which is practially impossible, given the no trade clause) or Bourn or Pence. Lee would make sense if you could move his contract, but Lee is also a guaranteed 30 homer, 100 rbi guy. Stubbs is a gamble. It’s not a BAD gamble I suppose, but I don’t see what you’d do with him right now.

See, Here's my idea

Astro send Keppinger back to the Reds where he is beloved by one and all; The Reds send homesick Drew Stubbs back to Texas.

A heartwarming trade

It could be a made for TV movie

The Carlos Lee could waive his no trade clause to playin front of adoring fans At Wrigley;and the Cubs cou ld send Aramis Ramirez to Astrso.

Ramirez could play third; Stubbs would roam left .

Pretty straightforward stuff

The radio played one of those Ronald Reagan speech moments

He mentionedan idea a citizen had submitted to help the environment . He wrote in that the US should dismantle the Rockies and place them along the Canadian Border.

This way the rain from the melting snow would water the plains; and the Rockies being so high could stall Arctic cold fronts.

Reagan did not want to give it a try.

Keppinger with 2d HR of night. Astros lead 5-4.

Shot just barely over the line to LF. Keppinger says “hello, Cincinnati. I used to play here.”

Well...

Manzella has struck out all 3 times.

by Astrofan on Sep 16, 2009 7:50 PM CDT reply actions

Actually three strikeouts is bad

Manzella and Chris Johnson have not impressed at the plate.

Realistically though, Manzella has to be given time to adjust

by Joe in Birmingham on Sep 16, 2009 7:54 PM CDT up reply actions

time to adjust? Cooper has given him his one game to show what he can do.

although I’m sure Coop put him at ease

Was he talking about chances? Fielding average? what?

now that I recall....

the other day, JD said that Matsui was on the verge of setting a record for Astros’ 2d basemen turning the double play. He was nearing or exceeding Biggio in 97 or 98, if I recall.

know your rules

Soto just gathered the ball with his face mask. Using anything other than the glove is a balk or an error or something and the runner on 2nd gets a base.

by ol Pete on Sep 16, 2009 8:18 PM CDT reply actions

when I first saw your post, I have this visual image of the ball stuck in the grill of Soto’s face mask. :)

If Soto was trying to scoop the ball with face mask, yes he should know better than that.

by clack on Sep 16, 2009 8:28 PM CDT up reply actions

the principle is similar to a play involving Fulchino earlier in the year.

The ball was hit back to him and it got stuck in his shirt. It was an automatic safe call for the batter going to 1st base.

by clack on Sep 16, 2009 8:33 PM CDT up reply actions

ironically

you can throw your bat at the ball though and get a foul ball or a hit for that matter or at least I’ve seen guys do it

Joe may be right that Stubbs’ will become an Astros-killer. That seems to happen with these Houston natives on other MLB teams.

I had to listen to the radio while I ran errands. And during Hunter’s at bat, the radio guys were kind enough to remind us that the game would be tied if Hunter hadn’t made the base running mistake earlier in the game. I had almost forgotten about that… I got irritated again.

by clack on Sep 16, 2009 9:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Critical lapses

1.. Hunter Pence ill advised attempt to talke third

2. Bazardo’s not catching the popup bunt and then not getting the batter at first

3. Michael Bourn’s sacrifice bunt (MICHAEL BOURN who already had two hits and was not likely to hit into a double play!!!)

4. Fulchino’s wild pitch (that may have been a passed ball by Coste) allowing the winning run to score

Astros fan for life

by Joe in Birmingham on Sep 16, 2009 10:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Fulchino’s pitch looked legitimately wild to me. But really I chalk up that run to Wesley Wright. Wright left a crappy situation for Fulchino to clean up. Fulchino beat the odds by allowing only 1 run to score.

I have to wonder about the idea of converting Wesley Wright to a starter....

his inconsistency as a reliever doesn’t give me a good feeling about putting him in the rotation.

While Fulchino was pitching, I kept thinking, “isn’t Fulchino a better candidate to be converted to a starter than Wright?” Interestingly, after the game was over, JD talked about how Fulchino looked like the type of pitcher who might thrive as a starter.

by clack on Sep 16, 2009 9:42 PM CDT reply actions

I would LOVE to see Fulch converted

He has looked solid all year and has even been good in 2-4 inning long relief appearances. I think he could become a good #4 or even a decent #3 starter.

by OremLK on Sep 16, 2009 10:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Alternatively

They could use him as a low-cost closer solution. Either one would be a better use of his talents since he’s clearly come into his own with a breakout year in middle relief.

by OremLK on Sep 16, 2009 10:39 PM CDT up reply actions

I know that smaller pitchers can become good starters. But there is a reason that scouts look for large bodies as starting pitchers. I think a guy like Fulchino is likely to be more durable as a starting pitcher than Wesley Wright, who is listed at 5-9, but as Alyson Footer has said…that is a generous measure.

Fulchino’s “break out” appears to be tied to learning a splitter at Round Rock this year. Many starting pitchers have found the split finger to be an effective pitch to complement their FB and CB (Roger Clemens, for example).
