Carlos Lee makes SI writer's All Underrated Team
Ted Keith includes Carlos as his team's left fielder. Probably were better choices out there, especially considering that Carlos plays defense like he watches his waistline, but the fact that he has been serially underrated makes his inclusion nice to see. It's almost gotten to the point where Lee is underrated even amongst other underrated players.

A thought exercise made me feel better about Carlos Lee.
A couple of weeks ago, I contemplated an article based on the idea of trading Carlos Lee’s bad contract for another team’s bad contract, with the intent of either improving team defense or team pitching. So I culled through the players with bad contracts who might qualify. What I found is this….Carlos Lee may have a burdensome and excessive contract, but he is much more productive than the other players with bad contracts. The best I could come up with was Carlos Lee for Barry Zito, and even at that the Giants would have to send about $20 million to make me think about it. Carlos is a good hitter, but Zito is a mediocre pitcher, and Zito has more years and dollars on his contract to boot. How about Carlos for Vernon Wells? Sure, Wells would play better defense, but I have a lot more confidence in Lee’s offense, and I suspect that Wells is more of a candidate for a collapse even though he is considerably younger. Would you trade Carlos for Aaron Rowand? Well, look at Rowand’s offensive stats before you answer. And Carlos for Eric Byrnes? Hell, no (well unless you just want a straight salary dump, since Byrnes only has one more year). At one time I would have traded Carlos Lee for Soriano. Would I now? No…particularly after it looks like Soriano may lose some speed after his knee surgery.
I gave up on the article….but I came to the realization that at least we can be thankful that Carlos Lee has been consistently productive. There are a lot of teams with similar bad contracts who aren’t getting a lot of production.
OK...this is a better trade idea...
Would you trade Carlos Lee for Carlos Zambrano straight up?
I didn’t consider it in my exercise, above, because Zambrano’s contract usually isn’t listed among the “bad contracts.” But recent reports indicate that the Cubs are interested in trading Zambrano, even though it is viewed by others as a tough sell because of his contract.
Going forward, Lee and Zambrano are paid approximately the same salary for a similar number of years. Lee is a tremendous hitter in Wrigley Field, and many Cubs’ fans have wanted him for that reason. Zambrano has pitched well at MMP (well, anywhere he has faced the Astros) and still produces good overall pitching stats….but his Ks and pitching performance has been declining each year. Negatives to a trade like this: reluctance to make intra-division trades and both players have No Trade Clauses.
is Zambrano is under 30
which i think he is, i would consider it. i would think that his skills would diminish slower than chuck lee’s are going to in the upcoming seasons. i’m just shooting off the cuff here, but the one thing i would be scared of is, despite that fact that he’s fairly young his k rates (like you point out) aren’t as good as they used to be. couple that with his less than maddux-ian control, and i could see him giving up more and more HRs as his career goes on. he could make adjustments, but its tough for a leopard to change his spots.

nice point, Joe!
if backe’s bat was worth a win when he played, imagine how much zambrano’s would be..

All things being equal,
I’d expect Lee’s contract to hold up better over the next few years. Yeah, there’s going to be a big dropoff at some point with Carlos, and when it comes it’s going to be awful, but pitchers are just naturally more risky.
And Zambrano has had so many arm problems over the past few years, and his K rate is declining more and more (hey, it’s what happens when you get older). And he’s always been a high-K, high-BB pitcher, so when the strikeouts leave he’s done. He doesn’t have the control to survive otherwise. On the other hand, you could probably move him to the bullpen and do fairly well.

Just another point....
Carlos Lee and Carlos Zambrano have almost the exact same WAR in 09 (2.6 for Lee, 2.7 for Z). So the real “bet” that would be made on both ends of this trade is how fast each player declines and probabilities of collapse for each player. Zambrano, by the way, has hit 4 career HRs at MMP. How many Astros’ pitchers have hit 4 HRs at MMP? Backe has 4 career HRs at MMP. I doubt any others do.
I don't really like Big Z or what he brings to the clubhouse
However, apparently Carlos Lee really likes Chicago and hitting at Wrigley. Might be the only team he’d waive his NTC to go to. But maybe he still wouldn’t.
I believe his NTC becomes limited starting at the end of next year; perhaps at that point we could move him for some salary relief and prospects (though obviously not his whole contract). We have a wealth of prospects coming up who could feasibly step in to play LF at the big league level.
perhaps an interesting option
would be a basketball-style trade. Take Derek Lee’s contract (and the last two years of his pay) and give them Carlos (who gets one more year than Derek at a much higher rate).
