I was kind of hoping they would play Tejada at 3B

And let Manzella have a start at shortstop. Oh well, I’m just glad something forced Cooper’s hand.

Braves running over Astros so far.

Escobar doubles. With runner on 2d, no outs, Chipper Jones immediately hits a single to RF. Escobar started to stop at 3d, but Pence mishandled the ball and he decided to score.

wow...

before they even announce the lineups. …. it’s 2-0

by Rhombus67 on Sep 10, 2009 7:09 PM CDT reply actions

I think the Braves came in with a strategy of 1st pitch hitting...

Not a bad strategy when Roy is having some initial difficulties getting his FB located.

by clack on Sep 10, 2009 7:10 PM CDT reply actions

Infield hit for Church.

Chris Johnson a bit awkward trying to dive for ball and he is late on the throw.

by clack on Sep 10, 2009 7:13 PM CDT reply actions

Oswalt had the flu or something coming into this game. I wonder if that is a factor?

by clack on Sep 10, 2009 7:15 PM CDT reply actions

so forced to ask a random question bc of the awful start...

I was having a discussion the other day and said that if we decided to rebuild this off-season and trade Berkman and Oswalt we could probably still get some good prospects. I thought what about Berkman for Madison Bumgarner.

The Giants are probably gonna miss the playoffs and it’s bc of hitting. They need a middle of the order hitter and could trade a prospect like Bumgarner and not change the dynamic of their current stellar SP core (if they bring the FA pitchers). A player like Berkman would dramatically change their offense and of course the Astros would get a great peice to rebuild with.

Knowing that the Astros might have to pay some money…Who do you think can’s the deal and why? …. or do you think it’s fair?

Again, thought it might be interesting to talk about.

by Rhombus67 on Sep 10, 2009 7:17 PM CDT reply actions

I don’t think there is any chance in the world that Berkman would approve a trade to SF.

by clack on Sep 10, 2009 7:19 PM CDT up reply actions

true

but if he wants to win he’d have a great chance … which might be difficult here in Houston

by Rhombus67 on Sep 10, 2009 7:22 PM CDT reply actions

I don’t think he cares about that as much as home/family, and he has always said he wants to stay in Texas. Maybe he might agree to go to Rangers. San Francisco is one of the least likely possibilities.

by clack on Sep 10, 2009 7:28 PM CDT up reply actions

as for the substance of the trade proposal...

the Giants pitching prospect plus another good prospect or a couple of B grade prospects might be a fair return. I don’t think you have to send money to cover the trade, because Berkman’s salary is not high for his value.

by clack on Sep 10, 2009 7:31 PM CDT up reply actions

What was that?

Chris Johnson allows another infield hit. My first reaction when he didn’t throw to 1st was WTF? Watching the replay, Johnson was playing far off the line which meant he had to come a long way to get the ball around the 3d base bag. Johnson may have had a momentary problem getting the ball out of his glove.

by clack on Sep 10, 2009 7:35 PM CDT reply actions

Do I interpret correctly?

Chris Johnson made two questionable non-plays in three innings?

by Joe in Birmingham on Sep 10, 2009 8:49 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree

We’d need more than just Bumgarner but if we decide to rebuild and if he accepts a trade there …. it seems like something that both teams would be looking for. Anyway… best case scenario would be for us to spend some money this offseason and put more good players around Berkman and Oswalt so they can win here…. but that’s unlikely

The beer that made Milwaukee famous

—actually I am a bad typist and was trying to watch a developing inning and type the entry so I could read all that had been written before I got home.

I’ve read everything now. Roy got hammered so y’all discussed trading Berkman to San Francisco for someone I don’t know.

it's hits like that ....

that give me hope for the future…. we’ve never had a speedy, GG caliber center fielder that gets on base and hits in the clutch…. in fact …. not many clubs have that….. Go Bourn

Roy Oswalt's line is almost unbelievable

10 hits and 1 walk in 2 innings; and 5 of the 6 outs were strikeouts.

Any word on what happened to Roy?

All I saw was highlights

A handful of line drives early in the count did him in. If he had the flu or something maybe he didn’t have the velocity or snap on his pitches. Listening to guys here, it sounded like guys were swinging early in the count. I’ve seen other teams do that against the Brewers and cause all sorts of problems. Unfortunately it usually doesn’t seem to work for the Brewers too often.

by ol Pete on Sep 10, 2009 9:24 PM CDT up reply actions

hitting early in the count is not a new strategy to use on Oswalt....

because he is likely to pump fastballs (strikes) in there to get ahead in the count. But it usually doesn’t work that well. It works like it did today if Oswalt’s location is bad.

Matsui makes a great play

Berkman tries for a grounder, blocks Matsui’s view.
Berkman misses the ball and somehow Matsui sees it, catches it and threw to Lopez at first in time.

WOW Brocail

grabs bunt and still on one foot while picking up the ball he slings the ball almost without looking to first to nab the runner, tehn loeses his balance and fell backward on the ground

Brocail sufferd an inujury on the throw; but after walking around and shaking his hand a bit continues to pitch

Next batter singled on first pitch

JD and Brownie were going on and on about that play. JD said it is the best play you will ever see a 42 year old pitcher make. He also said, “It’s 10% ability and 90% desire…Brocail made up his mind that ‘you aren’t going to get a hit like that off me.’”

Miggy

Between his OBP being only a hair higher than his batting average and all the GIDPs he hits into, he’s not that good of a hitter. His high batting average fools you into thinking he is. But he’s not.

And don’t talk to me about last night fair weather because I said then that it was luck that his walkoff hit wasn’t a game ending GIDP.

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.
