John Smoltz a possibility?
Saw that the Astros were briefly mentioned in this article involving John Smoltz.

Sources: Several clubs like Smoltz
There are many NL contenders currently scrambling for pitching -- the Dodgers, the Cubs the Brewers and the Astros, among them -- and there are teams willing to give the right-hander a shot at re-establishing himself in the league where he dominated for two decades.
If you ask me, Smoltzy looks like he's done, and I'd like to see him doing some color commentary. But for our rotation, could he be an upgrade at the #5 spot? Or maybe he could give us an extra arm in the pen and do some spot-starting?

Ugh. No.
But it would be a typical Astros move. Sign an old guy coming off of surgery who seemingly has nothing left. The astros bring him in and he proves that…he has nothing left. Problem is Smoltz isn’t a former Phillie. Wait till Pedro is ready to pitch and joins the Phils rotation. They already said Happ isn’t going anywhere. That leaves Jamie Moyer as the odd man out. You know Ed Wade will be ready to pick up another former Phillie.
I'd expect Moyer to retire if that's the case
The Astros already tried trading for Moyer a couple years back and he said no.

Smoltz is an intriguing option
it would allow the Stros to go for the highest avg club age in MLB history.

If Smoltz is willing to return to relief work (remember, he was an all star closer only a few years ago), I think he might fare better than he did for the Red Sox as a starter. The last time that Smoltz returned from significant injury, changing his role to reliever seemed to provide the best transition. Although Smoltz had bad results with the Red Sox, his peripherals (K/BB) and FIP were considerably better than his ERA would indicate. For that reason, I wouldn’t dismiss the possibility that he could return to form in the NL. I would consider him perhaps as a replacement for Brocail, and view him as a someone who bolsters the bullpen in the late stages of the season, like Hawkins did last year.
However, I wouldn’t favor paying him more than the minimum salary, which means either waiting until he clears waivers or working out a minor deal with the Red Sox whereby Boston pays his full contract (a la, the Lugo trade).
I would not mind
Smoltz in the Bullpen..Let him replace Doug “I suck” Brocail…Im sure Smoltz can be effective there…

Let's see...
Old? Check.
Had at least 1 great season in the past? Check.
Is considered washed up by most people’s standards? Check.
The Astros will probably consider signing him.
You forgot to add..
“Casual fans know who he is? Check.”

This article suggests that Smoltz would be a good pick up for a NL team…..
