Turning outfielders into infielders?
Chip Bailey in the Houston Chronicle blog today talks about Astros outfielders of the the future. Astros seem set with Lee, Bourn and Pence. Chip Bailey says Astros have three outfielders biting at the bit in Brian Bogusevic, Collin Delome, and Andrew Locke. I'm sure we could add one or two more outfielders to the list.
I was wondering how difficult it would be for three of the six to move to the infield (short, second and third). If they carry the bats they are supposed to have ,that would improve Astros batting.
I know Cardinals moved an outfielder to second, with decent results, this year. Astros' own Craig Biggio made Allstar appearances at second after coming up as a catcher. Bogusevic himself has already switched from pitcher to outfielder. How many times have I heard this year of a player who started as pitcher becoming a fielder (infield or outfielder) or started as position player and switched to pitcher,
Instead of trading these guys, or making them career AAA players, would it be realistic to turn them into infielders?

Only Carlos Lee has infield experience (a long time ago, as a minor league 3d baseman). Schumaker was originally a 2d baseman in the minor leagues before he was converted to outfielder. So, he had an advantage converting back to 2d base. Locke is a 1st baseman/LFer, who isn’t likely to play an infield position other than 1st base. As far as I know Delome and Bogusevic have never played any position other than outfield (other than Bogey’s position as pitcher). Generally speaking it is much easier to convert infielders into outfielders, rather than vice versa.

Bogey is left-handed, so he’s not an option.
not sure i’m aware of any OF that was brought up through a system as an OF that was converted to an IF. it’s usually the other way around. if you can play the infield (other than 1B), that’s a more premium position and you’d think they’d develop you as an IF.

apparently you're right about not playing 2d in the minors...
I was basing my thoughts on quotes I had seen out of the Cardinals blogs, like this one from the Cards’ GM:
"Schumaker was drafted as an infielder but has not played there since making the move to the OF. I have spoken with Tony on this and we have included Oquendo in these talks as well. Skip may get a look there this spring to gauge how comfortable he would be with trying to move back to the infield. He had a good offensively (sic) and we always look for creative ways to get players more playing time," Mozeliak said.

when Larry Dierker was actively writing for his site ...
he mentioned this as a possibility for Luke Scott, before he was traded. He said the Astros had done it with Denny Walling. He specifically mentioned his strong arm as a reason why he might have a shot to make it as a 3rd baesman. Granted, it was a long shot, but I thought that was a good idea, since the Astros seemed opposed to letting him stay in the lineup in the OF for some reason. his 18 HR (last time I checked) would be nice this year.
Not sure if any of the current crop of guys are candidates. Clemens has played 3B hasn’t he? But he’s still pretty low in the minors.

Farmstro said there is a rumor that the Astros may try to convert Towles to 2d base. My immediate thought was that Towles seems better suited for 3d base. Towles has a strong arm, he is tall, and 3d base would probably be easier for him to learn.
