This possibility doesn't surprise me at all
Although I am surprised by the assertion that McLane considered selling the team.
No offense, Only_A_Lad, but I don’t understand your statement. I mean, duh, it’s pretty self-explanatory, but I’m not sure that it’s valid based solely on this report. Ryan may totally be an a-hole; I have no real frame of reference to have an opinion one way or the other. But if he’s considering choosing to make a business decision to protect an investment, how does that make him a jerk? I mean it does kind of smack of rats abandoning a sinking ship, but most of the fans are there already, apparently.

The Statesman column raises the possibility that Ryan and Sanders would try to raise money to buy the Astros if McLane would sell the team. I don’t put a lot of confidence in the opinions of Kirk Bohls, who wrote the column, but I wouldn’t mind that happening.
I don’t blame Ryan taking the position with the Rangers; it was a promotion into the top echelon of team management. If this ends up badly for McLane, he has only himself to blame. When he learned that Ryan was interested in taking the Rangers’ position, he should have named Ryan as president of the Astros and given Tal Smith some kind of special assistant to the owner position.

So if this happens
The Rangers AAA guys come in and play at RR and the Astros AAA up and go wherever our new AAA location is. As far as Ryan buying the Astros, how would he do that? I know hes in on Round Rock and Corpus but where would he get funding for something like buying an MLB team?

Well this could just be Bohls talking out his ass. But he says Sanders and Ryan are trying to put an investment group together to buy the Rangers. So, presumably any interest in the Astros might depend on that falling through, or perhaps a new Rangers’ owner replacing Ryan, etc. Bohls says that Sanders and Ryan have been looking for new investment opportunities, including more minor league teams…and he suggests that they would love to put an investment group together if McLane decides to sell the Astros. Where does the money come from? I assume that they have to persuade a bunch of wealthy people to become partners with them in a consortium. I know that they have been successful in getting rich ballplayers, like Pettitte and Clemens, to put money into their minor league clubs.

So in that situation
A club would be owned by an ownership group rather than a single individual. Seems like that could get messy depending on how many guys have interests tied to the club. Say one guy wants to bring in a player but the other guys don’t want to. Or they have disagreements on contract lengths/ prices etc. I would guess Ryan-Sanders purchasing at least a controlling interest in the Rangers is a likely possibility. Tom Hicks had said he was willing to sell up to 49% ownership but then he was having financial difficulties and said he would sell a controlling interest. Although if the Rangers make the playoffs, he may back off of those comments.

it's very, very common to have an ownership group.
Back in the day, at least (and this might still be true) Steinbrenner was just the head of the Yankees’ ownership group. The Red Sox are owned by a group of individuals, same goes for the Padres.

D-Backs have a ownership group too, I think.

The way an ownership group would likely work
is that a core one or two people would be the managing partners and the rest of the group would be “silent” partners…still taking their cut of the profits, but not making many management decisions.
Or the various owners take different management positions…Ryan-Sanders Baseball, Inc., which owns the Round Rock Express, for example, has three principal owners (Nolan Ryan, Don Sanders, and Eddie Maloney), and the other owners take on officership positions: Reid Ryan (Owner and CEO), Reese Ryan (Owner and CFO), Jay Miller (Owner/President/COO). Bret Sanders and Brad Sanders appear to have stakes in the operation without any formal hand in the day-to-day operations.
