If Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright weren't enough, then Matt Cain is the cherry on the tough pitching sundae that has been the Astros Saturday-Monday schedule.

anyone else around tonight??

Matt Cain is gonna be tough….and if we lose I gotta hear it from one of my best friends…Great job Hampy….2 outs than 3 straight hits…and that may be enough for Cain

Is it bad that I wouldn't mind if Hampy got hit around?

I really want Bazardo to get a look. Hampton is just a filler that won’t be around next year.

by Astrofan on Aug 3, 2009 7:14 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Bazardo will not be called up until September

Even if Hampton is waived, it will be Paulino to fill the vacancy

do Astros give Hampy his walking papers...

If he sucks again? They should they sent Ortiz packing….

by jano4 on Aug 3, 2009 7:19 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

probably depends on how he looks, whether Dewey thinks he was making his pitches, etc.

My gut tells me that Hampton will be given a lot more leeway than Ortiz. He is lefthanded, and we don’t have a LHP starter to replace him. He is paid a larger salary, and Drayton hates to eat those contracts. And the Astros probably have a soft spot for Hampton because of his history here.

by clack on Aug 3, 2009 7:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

don't disagree with you.....

I just don’t like the way the Astros run this type of issue. If the guy is not coming back next year, he is pitching poorly, and you really don’t have a realistic chance of making the playoffs….the fans would be much happier if they’ed pull the trigger and get the young guys up here.
If it is about tickets I’d pay to see Bazardo….I won’t pay to see Hampton…

I’m not sure what the odds of Hampton improving might be. I think it is possible. However, he could be injured or something too. But I can understand your frustration with the way the organization sometimes plays favorites. I think Hampton gets some credit from the Astros because he battles and stays in the game longer than Ortiz. Of course, part of that has to do with Cooper….and Cooper clearly likes Hampton better than Ortiz.

A messy play

Runner on first . Batted ball careens off Hampton’s leg . He runs it down, dives and tries to flip to first with his glove in one motion . Ball barely rolls . Meanwhile the runner who was on first makes it to third.

if Hampton were more of a strike out pitcher....

I might say let it drop. But my guess is that the odds are good that run will score anyway, so get the out.

by clack on Aug 3, 2009 7:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hampton’s pitches don’t seem sharp like they were a couple of weeks ago. It’s not unusual for him to give up a lot of singles…that is part of the groundball pitcher profile. But his command seems bad…

and he gets a called K just as I type that.

the Astros don’t score a reasonable number of runs given their OBP, either.

our last two W’s have been in this category. You don’t expect to beat Wainwright with someone making his ML debut. Similarly here, you don’t expect to beat Cain with a guy who many want out like Ortiz.

by Joe in Birmingham on Aug 3, 2009 11:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yes, that was odd when they mentioned he was warming up...

at the time, I figured Cooper was just doing that because he knew Gervacio was due to be sent down after the game, and he wanted to make Gervacio believe that the Astros “might” have used him.

The only way I could see Gervacio used in the 9th is if Valverde had a melt down, allowed the lead run to score, and is using too many pitches to try and get out of the inning.

I have to wonder if Valverde will be available Tuesday night, by the way, given the number of pitches thrown Sunday and Monday.
