Astros vs Diamondbacks coverage, Astros vs Diamondbacks preview, AZ Snakepit
Two young pitchers face off in Game 1 between two teams out of playoff contention. Scherzer is a power guy who has all the potential in the world. Bazardo will have to locate well tonight. He got away with being sloppy against the Marlins in his last start, but with Justin Upton and Mark Reynolds hitting back to back this series, I wouldn't count on two lucky games in a row.

110 degrees in the shade!
but it feels cooler: 103 F
The temperature ought to drain the starting pitchers

I'm assuming
that he was hoping it would be a closer play at first or the ball would of gotten away on the throw.

I think so.
Or he was thinking if the throw was to the plate he’d have time to make third anyway. He was hauling around second, but out by several steps at third

This series is the only 3 games in a 20-game run
that the Diamondbacks play at home. They played in San Francisco last night; and after Sunday’s game they go on the road again.
Somebody ought to smack the schedule maker up side the head for that .

until 4 or 5 years ago...it was done by a husband and wife team...
who had been developing the schedules by hand for 20 years or something. Some firm which probably used more modern tools got the contract a few years ago.
And for this crap...
Brewers, Marlins, Brewers, Marlins, D-backs, Cards, D-backs. Really? Good thing for Bud sinces hes been struggling is that he gets to face teams that havent seen him before. It should boost his confidence. Wait…Marlins, Marlins, D-backs, D-backs. I don’t think his fortune will be any better tomorrow.

more potential...yes
but better no. I’ve seen people call him a AAAA player and he hasn’t done anything to make me think they were wrong. He was great at RR and since hes been up hes either walking guys cause he can’t find the zone or getting knocked around.

Somehow I get the feeling that Bazardo is not the future for this team. And you figure this has to be a tough spot to put a AA pitcher in for his debut.

I should try to be a little more positive. It’s good if McLane at least realizes changes need to be made.
But the trouble is that he is resistant to putting in competent people if it means they ever speak up in a way he dislikes. Vowing to “evaluate” every detail isn’t the answer—finding competent management and letting them run the show is the answer.
Not a tough choice
McLane micro-managing vs. Coop being allowed to manage
It’s not too much of a choice unless you want to be the only major league team with a one-armed pitching staff.
I hope he looks closely at radio announcers
One is tolerable. One isn’t

What does everyone think of the Roy situation? Wade comes out and says if hes going to say the team quits he needs to drop names if thats how he feels. Drayton has chimed in. We all know Uncle Drayton doesn’t like guys speaking out against him. Could he get bussed out?
I doubt it
He didn’t call Drayton cheap, insincere, or stupid

Right.
Nothing was said about the problems resulting from anything Drayton did. Nothing about past bloated contracts, current stinginess, etc.
And I said before, I’m a little miffed at Wade’s reaction. It sounded like it was really off the cuff… but how can it possibly be preferable for Oswalt to “name names” rather than make a general comment about the mood of the team?
My first reaction was Wade was out of line
Its fine that he disagrees with Roy doing that but to come out and rip him and act like a high school girl is unprofessional. To say if he feels that way he needs to name names is inexcusable. But lets not forget after Pudge was traded when Roy said more guys needed to be traded.
LaTroy Hawkins pitched a scoreless eighth

I support Roy
Let’s just take a look at all the parties involved since we don’t yet definitively know all the facts and probably won’t for several months:
Ed Wade – Fired from his last stint as a GM. Got choked and thrown to the ground by a player last season. In fairness, Chacon was a dumb thug. Still, Wade got frickin’ choked by one of his own. I never heard about Chacon strangling other GMs.
Cecil Cooper – Less than 2 seasons in his current role as MLB manager. Reports everywhere are doubting his abilities both on the field and in the clubhouse. The average fan can see issues. His termination seems inevitable.
Queen Solomon – Where the heck did this guy come from? Does he even live in Houston? Who is he to trash talk a Houston sports icon like Roy Oswalt and make up things/stretch facts?
Roy Oswalt – 10-year Astros vet who has, to my knowledge, been universally respected by his teammates, owner and fans as well as other players and staff around the league. A guy who has generally kept his mouth shut over those 10 years and done nothing but kick ass on a consistent basis (winningest pitcher during his tenure on a team that clearly didn’t have the best offenses over that stretch).
Once again, until all the facts come out, my guy tells me to side with Roy no matter what Ed Wade or Cecil Cooper or any of the instigators in the local media say.
I'm with you.
And it seemed like a number of other players were glad he spoke up.
Lance is a great guy, and it was good to see he called the team meeting to talk things over… but he’s not the same kind of clubhouse leader as some past Astros were.
ASTROS LOSE 14-7
Arizona Diamondbacks was the better team on the field tonight.
and that’s a sad commentary.
