Bud Norris' minor league stats
Salvaging a win in this series is the task that lays ahead of the Astros today. Adam Wainwright is nails against Houston in his career, and Bud Norris is making his first career start in the big leagues. Everything points to a Cardinals sweep. Lucky for us, baseball is a fickle, fickle mistress, so we have a shot.

honestly
I’d fire Coop just because of his advice to Pence at this point.

13 pitch inning for Wainwright
As Pence strikes out swinging (shocker) I don’t like Pence in the 3 hole with the way hes been struggling lately.
Holliday grounds out to 2d.
we found someone who can get Holliday out.
truly, though, you know Holliday is due for some regression to mean…..I just hope it isn’t after the astros leave town.
2 batters
1 k and 1 bb…cuda been a strike tho

Harnish or Clemens?
Norris reminds me of Roger Celemns in body style and approach. JD says Pete Harnish.
What do you think?

Okay, kid, in your first inning you face Albert Pujols
and if anyone gets on you face Matt Holliday, the hottest hitter in baseball.
Enjoy the game, kid.

I sometimes wonder if wainwright and carpenter are the same pitcher
they have the same stuff and build. The big difference is Wainwright stays healthy
sooo...
any chance we can get gaston up NOW!!!

Can Andrew Locke make it to AAA?
damn. NVM. I forgot that theres some reason Reggie Abercrombie is starting every day in the outfield even though hes never going to be a ML hitter.
Rasmus is supposed to be the best CFer in baseball, or something like that...
according to UZR. But in the games I’ve seen, Rasmus has had some poor routes and jumps on balls. But good to see Matsui hitting.
Bourn would have caught that

Pence goes on h&r
Molina fakes the throw, Pence stops on no contact, then runs to second after he sees the fake. Pence slides in before the tag.
Your friendly neighborhood Dream Shake mod.
Hunter Pence starteed for second . Tejada missed the ball. Hunter Stopped
- I mean stopped about 75% of the way to second . After he sees the catcher faked a throw to second, Hunter started for second. The catcher , seeing Matsui went back to third and Pence stopped, throws to second. Hunter beat the throw – barely

So before the game started, I thought that the perfect Astros welcome would be low run support, but it seems more fittiing for it to be some combo of low run support and the bullpen blowing the lead (possibly stealing a W).
damn blum
was hoping wed at least get to pudge so we dont have the automatic out next inning

walk...1st and 2d with Pujols up.
Rasmus is very good (especially for a rookie) at plate discipline, drawing walks.
that's the impression you might get from this series
but he’s only walking about 5% of the time.

actually
that reminds me:
We all need to thank the genius of TLR for batting Mr. .300-OBA in front of Pujols.

good thing Norris has been in AAA all year eh?
well, uh, yeah
he’s been working on his breaking pitches.
Your friendly neighborhood Dream Shake mod.
all the while...
Russ Ortiz was working on his hanging pitches
would you have prefered if the Astros
called him up before he was ready?
Your friendly neighborhood Dream Shake mod.
exactly
you could make a case for calling him up a few weeks ago but any earlier than that may have been too early
well youre saying hes ready now
but the only reason hes here is because of the injury to Roy. Other wise he’d still be in the minors because he wasn’t ready
he wasn't called up when the rotation was pitching well in most of June/July....
he is called up when the rotation struggles and has injuries. nothing unusual about that. that is how most young pitchers get called up.
no what I'm saying is that Bud wasn't ready until a few weeks ago.
If Roy wasn’t injured and Bud was still in AAA he’d be ready but just would be stuck in AAA
it's one game...
Awesome to see a rookie pitch so well in his first start, but let’s see a few starts before we reach the conclusion that he obviously should have been called up a while ago.
yep
remember Paulino’s first start? We had several commenters bitching that Coop didn’t leave him in for the CG.

Holy shit
If Norris can pitch anywhere close to this level, a (heatlhy) starting 4 of Oswalt, Wandy, Norris, and Moehler isn’t bad. Still need a competent #4/5 starter though.
Trade deadline is over, but I’m hoping Wade is searching through the waiver wire.
by goingforthecorner on Aug 2, 2009 4:25 PM CDT reply actions
we can always hope that Paulino takes a big step up....
I know he wasn’t pitching well in RR recently, but that may have a lot to do with what he was sent down to work on (breaking pitches). Paulino may see this as a chance to redeem himself and maybe he will.
Paulino was the darling of TCB earlier this season
I accept the theory Paulino is a starter and not a reliever. I don’t know why that is the case, but he’s a starter. Flip flopping him from one to the other messed him up. left to be a starter, I think he’ll rebound nicely.
