Moehler has lost the ability to pitch a good game.

And he’s got a 2 year contract, I think.

We are starting too many games that are essentially over in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd innings.

moehler has not been good

and never liked him but everyone says hes been ok…any chance bazardo comes in today…

4 hits, 2 walks and 4 runs later..

and it’s our turn to bat.

Who wants to bet we don’t get 4 hits and 2 walks until at least the 5th inning?

by entropic soul on Aug 10, 2009 6:41 PM CDT reply actions

I think they 'll get the hits and walks

not so sure about the runs. Astros have three hits and on e walk

and NOW 2 runs on Erstad’s homerun

I'm in bad mood

I am on hold to MLB.com listiening to a recorded mesage telling me every 20 seconds my call is important to them but that my wait will be longer than normal. Meanwhile Marlins scored four runs in the first and I missed it all (maybe that’s good that I could not see the carnage) .

holy crap

The White Sox got Alex Rios for nothing. I shit you not.

I mean, I know he’s been having a tough year, but surely the Blue Jays could afford to hang on to him for a little while longer, right?

Your friendly neighborhood Dream Shake mod.

by Only_A_Lad on Aug 10, 2009 6:52 PM CDT reply actions

yea

i think rios is a good deal for the price …he plays great defense and he will get better on offense…

by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Aug 10, 2009 6:59 PM CDT up reply actions

good deal...

But he is due something like 65 million dollars or something…..and he may well end up worth it. The Blue Jays just can’t afford him. The ownership group told them to cut payroll. The White Sox have always been high on Rios.

I had to listen to radio guys in my car through the early carnage. I’m not a Moehler fan. But the radio guys said the ump’s strike zone is tiny for both pitchers, and that the pitchers will have to start throwing the ball in the meaty area of the strike zone to get strikes. The problem is that a tiny strike zone probably hurts Moehler more than the Marlins’ pitcher, because Moehler stuff is so mediocre, he can get killed if he has to throw it down broadway.

Nice!

Pence reaches on a missed catch error, RHanley Ramirez to Uggla, throw pulls Uggla off the bag and then he sorta drops it.

Pudge ruins everything with a fly/pop out though.

hmm

doesn’t it seem like Bourn ends up in a lot of these near-miss collisions in the OF?

Good catch by Hunter, but maybe he should have backed off.

it's always the CFer's call....

I think he has a lot of near misses because Pence never wants to back off on balls in the air. Hunter told him, “I didn’t hear you.” Hunter seems to say that a lot to Bourn.

Jack in the Box is near me, and they have been running so many discounts and specials lately that I seem to be taking the easy way out on dinner, as I watch the Astros. I had: a “big deal” (cheeseburger, fries, taco, iced tea) plus free mini-churros (a mexican dessert) for something like $3.25. Of course, I suppose this pattern isn’t very healthy for me.

Interesting article about pitcher abuse

in amateur leagues. According to Dr. James Andrews, the number of teenage pitchers getting TJ surgery has just exploded.

Having never gotten past tee ball, I never had that particular problem…

James Andrews has long contended bioys under the age of 18

Should have very strict (low) pitch count

and NEVER throw a breaking pitch (the kids want to throw the breaking pitch and will tell you "Oh I don’t throw it that often)

good article....

but it makes me angry with Alden’s father and middle school coach. You ruin a kid’s arm because the coach is 0-13 against the school’s main rival? But I get more upset with the father…he is the one who should be protecting his kid’s arm. Instead it sound like he is trying to re-live his athletic career through his kid. At least Alden’s mother tried to send an email to the coach.

Sampson doesn’t have it anymore. I don’t think he is hiding it that much. He occasionally says he continues to be sore. JD has said it. I guess he has to tell the coaching staff, “I can’t pitch,” in order to have an effect on their decision.

Why did we walk Johnson to get to Rameriez?

I was a bit puzzled by the walk to the pinch hitter to get to the hot-hitting lead-off guy, but it set up the double play so it made sense. Sure it backfired, but that’s the breaks. By why did Cecil Cooper chose to walk lefty Nick Johnson to get to the right-handed hitting National League batting leader? To set up a force at third? Makes no sense. Can anyone explain that one?

by flastrosfan on Aug 10, 2009 8:42 PM CDT reply actions

I wasn’t watching the move….but usually with Cooper, the answer is, “why the hell not?”

by clack on Aug 10, 2009 8:45 PM CDT up reply actions

I had to register. I'm watching the Marlins broadcast and when Rameirez was at the

plate, they were talking about it again. Said it would be interesting to hear what astros players thought about the move. they were pretty confused.

by flastrosfan on Aug 10, 2009 8:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Steve Sparks on the Astros' post game show....

criticized the IBB decision to bring up Ramirez. He said it is hard to understand or justify. “Sometimes the manager just has a feeling in the gut,” was the only rationale he could come up with. I think that is similar to my “why the hell not?” explanation for Cooper’s decision.

Chronicle's game story is funny.....

They let Richard Justice write it. And he takes some serious but funny pokes at Cooper:

MIAMI—There was Cecil Cooper’s peculiar decision to intentionally walk Nick Johnson and pitch to one of baseball’s 20 best hitters in the sixth inning.

Challenging Hanley Ramirez is an unusual way to try and win a baseball game, but maybe Cooper figured that since the logical ways weren’t working, he’d try something completely different.

``I don’t have a problem with that,’’ Cooper snapped later.

Well, okay then, Mr. Touchy.

Down the hallway, Hanley Ramirez didn’t have a problem with it either.

``That’s the first time I’ve seen it,’’ he said.

and this…

It was a game with all kinds of nooks and crannies, and not just because of Cooper’s bizarre decision to pitch to the National League’s leading hitter. Not that it matters, but Ramirez is also leading the NL in hitting with runners in scoring position.

If you like a man unafraid to put his head in the lion’s mouth, you’d love Cecil Cooper on Monday night.

Maybe Cecil Cooper has finally lost it.

by clack on Aug 10, 2009 10:52 PM CDT reply actions

he has realized that Drayton and Wade are keeping him on just so they can fire him at the end of the year.
