Washington Nationals at Houston Astros, Jul 9, 2009 7:05 PM CDT
This will be an interesting game following the complete of 05/04/09's rain out. I'm just excited because I scored a ticket to the twofer (of sorts). HLP already posted a mini-game thread for the 6:05 Game and I have this one se to role out at 7:00 PM for the scheduled game. I really am just confused as to how the logistics of the make up game will work, so I'm not sure what to do about this gamethread. It will be an interesting day for the Astros and for the denizens of TCB.

Astros quickly losing main game.
Johnson with a hit, and advances on a WP, then goes to third as Pudge’s throw sails wide. A hit scores Johnson.
1-0.
Another wild throw??

2-0 Nats now.
Carlos Lee misjudges long flyball by Dunn which goes for a double. At first television didn’t show Lee as he was behind the jutting wall in LF. Replay shows that the ball came down just behind him, and he appeared to misjudge it.
Pitiful defense
Lee almost misjudged another, i don’t agree with JD that he lost it in the lights….. thats Lees’ Defense.
people talk about the Nationals having a historically bad defense...
compare it to the first Mets team.
But really the Astros seem to want to say, “anything you can do, we can do better” (or worse as the case may be).
Berkman scores on Pence single...
Berkman might have been thrown out if Dunn had thrown more accurately.
why why why
Why couldn’t miggy have turned that dp in the first game??
Lannan with a double
Lannan is very slow, but when he saw that Carlos Lee was nonchalanting getting to the ball, he took 2d.
It's cool, Carlos
no need to try to get to that ball or anything.
Your friendly neighborhood Dream Shake mod.
that was ridiculous...
first, Lee misjudged the carom, and then instead of running full speed to get to it, he was just doing a fast walk toward it…not even a jog.
This has been the most astounding display of fielding in baseball history.

Astros taking nationals too lightly??
seems like a few of them are not really in the game(s)
yes, that thought crossed my mind.
in fact, I was kind of concerned about that before the games started—-particularly whether they would take the suspended game seriously enough. It kind of reminds me of that first game against the Padres, when it seemed like the Astros were taking that team too lightly.
seems like the defens and offense in particular play down
to the level of team they are playing… i do the same thing when playing my wife in pool. difficult habit to break out of when a really good team or in my case player comes along.

stupidest. game. ever.
hbp to load the bases. inning ends on a freaking rundown.
Your friendly neighborhood Dream Shake mod.
2 runs score on a single with bases loaded, 2 out.
Bourn’s throw was wild, and went past Pudge….Astros F’d up rundown and Nats F’d up base running until a runner was out.
Fulchino takes over now....
odd move, but I’ve come to expect that from Coop.
Fulchino can’t handle infield ball and it goes for a hit.
Ortiz out after only 68 pitches
Injury?

I would boo too
They are booinmg because they see noone absolutely noone hustling. if he had started running from the box he would have had a stand up triple.
Blum has hamstring issues
"Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs"

Blum does have hamstring issues
But again if had run out of the box instead of trying to turn it on at second he would have easily made it
I join the game in progress
Ryan Zimmerman showed why he deserves to be in the All Star game.
Reading this thread And having watched the part inningof the first game) it seems the Astros defense tonight is unexplainably bad

I can’t say that I saw how fast he was running. But I will defend him if he has a hamstring problem that he is protecting. I don’t know how serious it is. But JD seemed to think that Blum was right for stopping at 2d earlier.
Also, stop sign was put on by the 3rd base "coach"
"Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs"

on the double
Blum trotted out of the box and only kicked it in when he saw that the ball was not caught by the diving center fielder. He ran hard all the way on Keps triple. my only criticism was that the team as a whole (not just blum) were not seeming to run very hard. but its all a moot point now that we have the lead….

I'm not watching...
How did Bourn triple to left? Did Dunn do something dumb?
yes...misplayed.
Ball was off the LF wall…to high to catch, but Dunn apparently lost sight of it and was too close to the wall as it ricocheted back.
yeah
he either misjudged the ball’s flight badly or lost it in the lights. Then it bounced off the wall towards 3B. Bourn was really hauling ass and just barely avoided the tag.
Your friendly neighborhood Dream Shake mod.
yes and no
dunn tried to act like it was going to be a sac fly, u can tell, when he took eye off ball to check if blum was still at 3rd…then dunn quickly turned around only to misplay ball off wall and it goes by him…meanwhile bourn is hustling to 3rd…bourn slides in to a safe call (tho it cud have gone either way)
btw i think if that was carlos lee hitting he wuda been out at 1st
by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Jul 9, 2009 9:17 PM CDT up reply actions
Well - yes
Bourn hit the ball high to left. Dunn stops about 20 feet in front of the wall looking up like it was a lazy fly; then it looked like he had no idea where the ball was . The ball hit the wall ; rolled about two thirds of the way back to the infield. By the time Dunn chased the ball down, Bourn was flashing to third (Close play at third though)

That makes me feel better
I was thinking it was BM. Roy will likely give us a chance but it seems like someone also finds a way to make us lose when we can get to .500
recently:
the beating in San Fran
The meltdown that gave the pirates 4 runs late/Keps DP with bases loaded
Miggys error today
this team is hard to predict.
but if they keep their heads screwed on right, they should win the series. The Nationals are a very bad team. They are coming off an embarrassing sweep to the Rockies where they stunk up the joint with bad defense, bad base running, bad relief pitching, etc.
We have the advantage of playing
the only team in the majors that has not yet won 10 games on the road.

Actually, if you use the log5 method
to analyze the games the Astros should have won, they are 2 short. The advantage of log5 is that it takes into account the strength of schedule, and the Astros schedule has been weaker than average since the beginning of the year.

he’s, what, in his 70s? And he was already run out of the job for bad reasons. Coupled with health concerns, I think that his previous experiences with Drayton would prevent him from taking on a management role.

Post-game show
Ortiz seems really upset with the way he’s been handled. Did not like being pulled when he got pulled tonight, and it sounds like he thinks he’s being jerked around by a manager who doesn’t like his pitching style.
to be fair
when your “pitching style” is “walk a bunch of dudes and give up runs,” then you should expect to be pulled.
Your friendly neighborhood Dream Shake mod.
that was Ortiz's pitching style, even when he was he a good pitcher.
He has always had a bend but don’t break style. It was very frustrating when he pitched against the Astros, because it always seemed like you had lots of base runners but couldn’t get many runs. In this game, pulling Ortiz was utter stupidity. Use up your bullpen and piss off your pitchers, Cooper. In the long run the team will regret it. In his post game press conference, Cooper gave no good reason for pulling Ortiz, other than he felt like it, and he said, “I know it’s not a popular thing to do.”
