BA posts mid-season top 50 Prospect Rankings & 'Stros have 2.

Amongst all the Roy Halladay trade speculation ( & prospects the Blue Jays will receive speculation) I happened upon an Article by Baseball America that lists their new mid-season top 50 prospect rankings.  I'm not a BA subscriber so I couldn't tell you how to get there from their page and I have no idea how to post links ... so I'll just have to tell you how I got there.

Went to mlbtraderumors.com and clicked on the link called Baseball America ranks under the rumor titled Roy Halladay Rumors:  Prospect Update.  (It's in the section talking about the Cardinals prospects & Brett Wallace).

Anyway, Jason Castro ranks # 19 and if you can count on your own Jordan Lyles ranks #41.  Not bad for an organization that ranked dead last in farm systems last year.  This obviously is nothing but possitive news.  I, for one, am sick of the national media bashing the Astros organization every chance they get.  Whether it's how imcompitent Ed Wade is - or how old and bound for failure our current roster is - or how inept our farm system is ... the national media seems to enjoy ripping us.

No matter what happens the rest of this year and how the FO handles our Free Agent (i.e. Tejada, Valverde, Hawkins) situation at least we can look forward to hearing some possitive talk about our farm system.  I would consider Castro untouchable and probably wouldn't trade Lyles but it means we could at least seriously entertain trade talks for Jake Peavy when that surfaces again this off-season.  As I said ... I'm not advocating doing that and trading away our future but at least we got options.  And having options has got to be good.

Hey .... In Bobby Heck we trust!! ... Right?

Here is the BA link.

I think it’s several years since the Astros had two prospects in BA’s top 50. In the last three years or so, they have been lucky to have 2 prospects in the top 100.

we had 3 in Top 100 at 2007 pre-season

Pence 38th
Patton 58th
Albers 85th….
then only 1 in 2008 (Towles) and 2009 (Castro)

06 (Hirsh Patton)
05 (Burke, Astacio)
04 (Buchholz, Lane)

Pence and Buchcolz(50th) are the only two make top 50 since 2004.

Wow

Zeke Astacio was in the top 100?

man, in the 05 spring training, Zeke Astacio seemed unhittable.

Three catchers in the top 10 above Castro.

Montero, Yanks
Posey, Giants (drafted ahead of the Castro)
Santana, Indians

It will be interesting to see how Castro’s career compares to these three guys. Most likely, all three will be contemporary catchers in the majors in the near future.

If I remember rightly,

Montero isn’t really a catcher.

do you mean he isn't a good defensive catcher?

BA lists him as a catcher. So far this year, he has played in two positions in AA…28 at bats at DH, 69 at bats at catcher.

He's listed as a catcher

but its a generally accepted truth that he will most likely move to LF or DH or 1B sometime in the future, mostly because his defense at catcher is really regarded as quite shoddy

yep

I meant it that way. Only the Yankees seem to think he’ll be able to stay behind the plate. But the good news is that he’s a good enough hitter to go elsewhere.

we can't count on our own... :p

the list after 25th is alphabetic by last name…

Anyway it’s great to have 2 in top 50.

I remember in 2007

when we had Pence, Patton and Albers. But I don’t think we’ve ever had anyone as high as Castro in a while. You’re right .. Pence was 38th aand I believe Hirsh was somewhere in the 30’s as well. But that’s about as high as we’ve been in the past 6 ot 7 years. Hopefully Castro’s the real deal

Lyles isn't #41...

He is a part of the “next 25”, a list which appears in alphabetical order. Lyles ranks anywhere from #26-50, which leaves me satisfied.
