Jose Altuve
The Gold Star Performance of the Day goes to Greeneville second baseman Jose Altuve. The 19-year old was 1 for 3 with a home run, two runs scored, one RBI and two walks on Wednesday. I haven't gotten to mention him yet, but boy, what a season he's having already. Altuve leads Greeneville with 12 Runs Created this month and has gone 12 for 33 with 10 walks, 14 runs scored, 5 RBIs, two doubles, one triple, two home runs and five stolen bases in July. For the season, Altuve is batting .343/.439/.514 with eight stolen bases in 10 attempts. Did I mention that he hasn't struck out this month and has just four strikeouts this season? Suffice it to say, I'm excited about his development now and would rate him in my top 20 prospects in the organization right now.

Altuve is TINY
Just checked out his bio page and he’s listed as 5’5 and 148 pounds. His numbers look good and he’s only 19 years old but unless he’s some sort of freak of nature I can’t imagine him having too bright of a future in the big leagues. Unless he’s David Eckstein
or some guy
name Dustin Pedroia. He’s admitted in interviews to being about 5’ 6’’ or so.

Pitchers hate trying to throw strikes to a 5'5" hitter....
with patience he should be able to be an OBP type player. Anyone remember Freddie Patek from Seguin TX? He was also listed at 5-5 and 148 lbs. He was a fine shortstop for the Pirates (and later the Royals) over a 14 year career. He started on several playoff teams. His hitting stats weren’t great (though it was a lessor offense era), but he always seemed to do a lot of damage to the Astros. He stole lots of bases in his career.
He is a fan favorite
He is listed as 5’ 6" on the local roster and 165ish. He is solidly built and very very quick! Makes great plays on foul balls and short pops in the outfield. Plays a solid second base. He turned an amazing DP last night. He is leading the league in Runs, BB and Stolen Bases so far this year. He is hitting lead off exclusively.
My only concern about him is that I think he is still using a composite bat, which is allowed in Short Season leagues. It means he gets more power and gets away with fisting the ball for hits where a regular bat would break on those.
This infield of Meyer, Mier & Altuve is the best infield we have had in Greeneville since 04 when we had Sellers, Sutil and Triplett. The 04 infield were 22, 19 & 22 respectively. The current one is 18, 18 & 19. I am excited about them.
