Pittsburgh Pirates at Houston Astros, Jul 8, 2009 1:05 PM CDT
Lineup for today (via Alyson Footer):
Bourn
Tejada
Puma
Lee
Blum
Pence
Matsui
Quintero
Wandy
Last night was one big missed opportunity. Walks, unearned runs, and seeing eye singles pushed the Astros back to two games under .500. Now Wandy needs to come through just so we can salvage a series win against the Pirates. He has been off and on, and off again, and then back on seemingly for the past month. Solid starts against Minnesota and San Diego sandwiched a not so great start against Detroit. He's 0-1 against Pittsburgh this season though, and sports a 5.37 career ERA against the Buccos in ten starts.

I think Matsui needs to be taken out of the starting lineup.
Just play Kepp at 2nd. Matsui’s offensive problems have just been embarrassing.

I think
Blum needs to quit batting in front of Pence too….

yeah, lots of things wrong with the starting lineup
I’d probably move Pence back to #2 or #3 and move Tejada down.

I'd like to see
Pence move to the 3rd spot and Berkman 4th and Lee 5th. I don’t mind Tejada as long as he’s not hitting into double plays and allowing Bourn to take a base instead of fouling off pitches.

Wandy gets through the first easily
groundout and 2 K’s.

Morton gets a couple groundouts
strikes out Lance to end the inning.

pretty nice inning for wandy
IF pop fly to matsui to start the inning, then two singles given up to the laroche brothers. Wandy goes 3-0 on the next batter, things look like they’re going to turn out awful, and he comes back to get the next two outs on strikeouts.

carlos gets his
during an interview with the panamanian national soccer team. neat.

Pence advances the runners on a bouncing grounder. same effect as a sac bunt. though a sac bunt isn’t really what we needed.
Matsui
Can not stay away from that inside breaking pitch….

Is it wrong to hope he has another DL stint?

Morton looks like a pretty good young pitcher.
He may be kind of an undervalued prospect. When the Pirates got him in the McLouth trade, a lot of bloggers/web sites were saying that the Pirates didn’t get enough. Morton had pitched well in the minors for the Braves, but he wasn’t highly regarded. There is a lesson there somewhere…not sure what, though.
Carlos Lee's remaining contract...
When I think of it, a little vomit comes up in my mouth. When does his contract’s NTC end. I’m on my phone, so I can’t look it up.

no, his salary has already increased significantly.
18.5 million, beginning in 09, and continuing at that annual amount through 2012.
I think after next season...
so yeah we could trade him and his 18.5M to who????
"now you chunkin' in there.."
Full no trade till 2010
2 more years after that at 18.5 per…till 2012…
"now you chunkin' in there.."
Cot’s baseball contracts says the full no trade clause is only through 2010. That article is consistent with that, because it suggests that a partial no trade clause kicks in after that. those typically involve lists of teams to which he can be traded.
I didn’t realize the full no trade was only too 2010.
I don’t think managment will want to move him, unless he really stinks in which case whose going to take his contract anyways?

surprisingly
Bourn’s helmet didn’t come off on that triple.

Berkman
takes it too tal’s hill with Tejada at 1st. thrown out at the plate…

Berkman with a Tal's Hill double...
Tejada thrown out at the plate, coming all the way around. Great throw by Jack Wilson on the relay.
one could criticize sending Tejada past 3d base, with no outs.
But I truly thought he would score. With the ball so deep, it seemed like a certainty. But Wilson just made a great throw from beyond the infield.
Tejada out at the plate on a really long double (landed on the hill) from Berkman.

Miggy....
He is having a real contract year this year. I really wonder whether the Astros will trade him. I don’t think they will resign him, and in any case he will test the FA market. I think they should trade him….best way to get any return on their investment.
"now you chunkin' in there.."
as do I
far more likely that the FO decides to try for another run this year.
Your friendly neighborhood Dream Shake mod.
I'm worried
that he’s going to fad in the 2nd half in which case he loses trade value and/or is less productive for the stretch run.
by Timothy De Block on Jul 8, 2009 2:01 PM CDT up reply actions
yeah I know
Astros will delude themselves into thinking they have a chance.
"now you chunkin' in there.."
well,
I think if the Astros made the right moves and if they are over .500 at the ASG, then they’ll have a shot.
Your friendly neighborhood Dream Shake mod.
I'm aware
Like I said, they’d need to make the right moves and do the right things at the major league level.
Your friendly neighborhood Dream Shake mod.
well, it just means the Astros have to beat the other teams in the NL Central. that will always be the case, if you want to get to the playoffs. At this point, the Cards, Brewers, and Cubs aren’t exactly great shakes.
if some other cubs players could get hurt celebrating that would be super.
by Timothy De Block on Jul 8, 2009 2:06 PM CDT up reply actions
Dempster leads the way.
And the Cubs are just one more Milton Bradley meltdown from a a full blown catastrophe.
now that we have few decent prospects
at both RR and in the lower minors I hope they don’t give up too much. I really think though they are committed to building the farm and won’t give up much. I agree I think Miggy will slow down in the 2nd half…

RBI single by Bourn to score matsui
after Q walks and Wandy sac bunts into a fielders choice to get Q at second.

Tejada single just past the 2d baseman....
loads the bases with 2 outs. that hit was just too shallow to allow a score.
tejada ground one right past 2nd base
bases loaded for Lance

Very nice....
last night is gone from the memory…heading to the game tomorrow, maybe we can win 2 and get over that elusive 500 mark…
"now you chunkin' in there.."
They need to
get over and stay over.
A nice 9-11 game winning streak would be nice.

8 K's for Wandy and 70 pitches into the 5th inning.
by Timothy De Block on Jul 8, 2009 2:33 PM CDT reply actions
I’ve heard people call Wandy a “crafty lefty” and not a “strikeout pitcher”, but when he’s on, he sure does rack up those K’s
ya, his SO/9 has steadily increased each year, so he may be moving towards becoming a strikeout pitcher.
by Timothy De Block on Jul 8, 2009 2:38 PM CDT up reply actions
He is a K pitcher...
When he pitches against teams like the Pirates, where the young guys can’t lay off all his off speed curves and changeups…
He is a crafty pitcher against the more veteran clubs, that can at least put those pitches in play of foul them off and sit on his fastball…
but if that strike to ball ratio stay at 53-20 he will be a very successful pitcher!!
"now you chunkin' in there.."
going into today's game, Wandy had the 9th best K/game ratio in the NL...
He is at 8.5 K/G Kershaw and Santana are the only LHP with a better K/G among starters.
Bourn just stole second
The Stros are just running all over this Pirate team.
by Timothy De Block on Jul 8, 2009 2:59 PM CDT reply actions
Not Pence
He’s a horrible base stealer
I think Bourn has the green light pretty much all the time.
by Timothy De Block on Jul 8, 2009 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions
With Pence's speed
he should be better at stealing bases.
by Timothy De Block on Jul 8, 2009 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions
slow starter though....
with those long strides takes him a few to get up to speed….at that is what I see….
"now you chunkin' in there.."
Berkman
Got the avg up to 274 and cracked the 50 RBI number today…(51)….a big 2nd half by him could really lead this team.
"now you chunkin' in there.."
Wandy...
Really rocking today…..93 pitches through 7….Coop should let him go one more….but he won’t….
"now you chunkin' in there.."
Coop......
should let him go the whole game, because who knows how many pitchers we may need tomorrow.
LOL!!!!!!!!!
this is " I gotta change pitchers Cooper" we are talking about….
"now you chunkin' in there.."
Q just took a foul tip ball that bounced off the ground in the neck
by Timothy De Block on Jul 8, 2009 3:21 PM CDT reply actions
No one warming in the pen
Looks like Wandy will get a chance to finish the game.
He’s also up to bat.
by Timothy De Block on Jul 8, 2009 3:29 PM CDT reply actions
i guess that answers that
i hope he can do it in 120 or less.
120 or less would be nice...
Yeah he won’t start again till after the break…..unless he makes the team….
"now you chunkin' in there.."
Wandy.....'da man!!!
speaking as a fan….with Roy, Wandy, Hampton pitching the way they are…..we may have a chance….
"now you chunkin' in there.."
ASTROS WIN 5-0
I missed the game. Luckily MLB.com is showing it in archives version. (Wandy loooks good early)
