It's a battle of lefties tonight. Hopefully this matchup goes better than Hampton's last start against Dodger left hander Clayton Kershaw. Here's my guarantee for tonight: if Mike Hampton keeps the ball in his glove in between pitches, he will do much better. Just my two cents.

Cards face the Phils tonight (Pineiro vs. Happ), Milwaukee opposes their former tenants, the Braves (Parra vs. Vazquez), and the Cubs have already beaten the Reds.

Astros record, sans Berkman: 0-0

With Santana starting for the Mets, it will be a low scoring night for the good guys, which means the Astros need to play excellent defense. Hampton is a groundball pitcher, and the Mets are in a small ball mode, given their lack of slugging. This means the Astros need to execute with tight defense.

by clack on Jul 24, 2009 6:45 PM CDT reply actions

Miggy Tejada is too hot to take out of the lineup...

but as DQ suggested earlier this week, tonight would be an ideal night to utilize Edwin Maysonet- at least from a defensive standpoint

by Evan Hochschild on Jul 24, 2009 6:57 PM CDT up reply actions

This could be a tough game

The pregame talk about Johan Santana (and his success against the Astros) is frightening. Astros must score if and when they can; and do it without the Lance Berkman security blanket. The good part is the Mets are offensively challenged with most of their firepower out of the game tonight.

Bad start for Hampton

Second batter wanted to sacirfice bunt; but Hampton threw four balls way outside the strike zone.

Somehow getting out of this inning with only 1 run given up seems like a victorry.

Hopefully.. Santana will make a mistake.

This is a very beatable team starting a difficult to beat pitcher

don’t give Johan good run support, but I’m looking for a good place to find out what his run support is this year.

Michael Bourn’s speed single-handedly forces Santana to make at least two errors on the play. Safe at first.

Speed Kills

Bourn BUNTS ( Boo) and Santana commits an error . First he tried to tag Bourn but Bourn passed him so Santana flipped over the first baseman’s head . Bourn fell over the bag but is okay.

Yeah Third inning

Bourn (against my advice) tried to bunt for a single.

He bunted toward first. Santana caught the ball and continued running to the baseline; but by the time he got there, it became apparent Bourn was by him. He flipped the ball backhanded to first but over Francoeur’s head
