Lance Berkman to DL (Maysonet called up)

JJO in the Chronicle reports that Lance Berkman is on the 15 day DL with that calf strain. Apparently it was not as "mild" as first reported, When I researched Type II Strain, the material said recovery time is measured in weeks (not days).  So while I am  a litte surprised to read this announcement, it is not a shock. Since Berkman pinch hit last night,  the 15 days must start today. Any way you look at it, he'll miss the Mets, Cubs, Cardinals and Giants series.

While he will be missed for sure, losing Lance is easier to take seeing how well Coste has played in Berkman's absence and seeing how well the team has responded this week.

Edwin Maysonet is back. Hopefully he will get an opportunity to play; but unless Matsui needs off days to recover from his bumps and bruises,  I  don't seeing much playing time for him. Still it's nice to have him back. I wish it were under different circumstances.

This truly is the darkest of days...

seriously..there is a huge storm rolling through houston right now.

but in all seriousness, i think that most people had to see this coming. lance looked so bad in game 1 of the cards series that it was hard to imagine just a few days would do the trick. let him rest, get healthy and come back in august. a 5-2 record in the first two series is nice, considering that had we gone something like 2-5, his injury would be a lot more worrisome. i echo your thoughts on coste and maysonet- both guys are capable to produce at this level- it just sucks that it took a berkman injury to necessitate their doing so on a consistent basis.

I agree with you that it isn’t that surprising but it hurts considering how hot we are and we would be adding one of the best hitters in the game who could likely keep that momentum going. It’s obviously not as bad as it could be considering how well Coste is playing, how Edwin is coming up, and most of all that we have already proven to ourselves that we can do some damage without Lance in the starting lineup. We have 13 games including 7 away games against the Cubs and Cards during this 15 day stretch so if we can win 3 maybe 4 against the Central and another 3 then I will be ecstatic. LETS GO STROS!!!

I'm Trying to Find a Positive

If we can stay within a few games of the division lead with that grueling schedule while Lance is out, I’ll feel pretty good about our playoff chances with Lance on board going into September.

This sucks

and it couldn’t have come at a much worse time, with this stretch of tough opponents. Hopefully Miggy, Caballo, and Pence can carry us through, and that Coste can continue to give us positive contributions. I think we’d have to feel good about winning 6 or 7 between now and when he gets back. Hopefully that’ll be enough to stay in the pack at the top of the division.

Bummer

I was considering getting end-of-the-year season tickets, so that I would have a post-season option. I have until Tuesday to decide. Will definitely wait to see how we do against the Mets, though, because I fear that they’ll have a bit of a post-sweep lull, not to mention their annoying penchant for playing to the level of the competition (good when it’s the Cardinals, potentially not good when it’s the Mets).

At least I didn’t fork over the $$$ today, which I came close to doing.

If it had to happen

now may the best time, as the Astros have 3 off days during that 15 day period. We’ll still be without him for almost a fifth of the remaining games. He’ll be absent for the road trip to St Louis and Chicago, the home series against the Giants and, I think, the first game of the home series against the Brewers.

It may look like he team doesn’t seem to have missed him much yet, but losing a player like Berkman is bound to hurt the team, both on the field and psychologically.

staying positive

I’m going to stay positive about this. Coste has been much better than i ever thought possible and the team has proven that they can win without Lance now, it will give everyone a big mental boost when he does come back healthy. Hopefully it won’t affect his swing because man he was in a groove and seeing the ball like it was a beachball. Glad Maysonet is back up, will wait to see how often coop puts him in before showering him with praise, although I do think this will give him the experience to battle matsui next year 2nd. Just glad that Carlos came out of his slump and Blum is hot, Bourn and Miggy are keeping up with their good years, Pudge has been literally on fire behind the plate defesively, solid contributions from Keppinger and coste and piching has been solid. now if we could get hunter out of his funk…… Even without Lance I am looking forward to playing the cubs, cards and giants next week , giants did not have a good showing against atlanta and we are always up for the cubs and cards, Break even or just ahead ball without Lance will be great but I think we will make up some ground and possibly put some distance on these teams. Here’s to the power of positive thinking!!
