Jonathan Gaston, add two, and you get 25...

Yes, thats right... Jonathan Gaston hits home runs #24, and #25 tonight versus the Stockton Ports, Class A Affiliate of the Oakland Athletics, I misjudged traffic so I arrived in the 5th inning, apparently, each time Gaston hits a home run, women walk around with canvas bags attached to sticks asking for donations for each home run... I sadly did not contribute, but by no means do I want him to quit hitting home runs. Jethawks fall 11-6... I will be attending tomorrow's game, roughly 10 hours and 52 minutes from now... Go Astros, Go Jethawks

AA

The Astros need to get him a ticket to AA immediately.

I completely agree but

it’s hard to pick who he’ll replace. Collin DeLome and Andrew Locke need to start so Mitch Einertson and Josh Flores will have to take a big hit in playing time. I’d be in favor of Gaston replacing one of those guys because we need to get guys up in AA and succeeding there to get youth in our system but also for trade bait come next years trade deadline. This kid looks to be very special. The only knock you can make against him is he has 99 Ks. A little much putting it lightly but still has a .307 AVE, .393 OBP, 25 HRs, is 12 of 14 in SBs, and doesn’t commit too many errors either. Hopefully the Astros will promote him soon.

Flores out for season with

another knee injury. It doesn’t look good for him after missing last year with knee troubles.

Heck & Co. have been very aggressive in promotions this year (see: Metzeros going from Lex to Corpus, Duncan initially starting at Lancaster skipping Lex, etc…). There is a reason they have not promoted Gaston. I don’t know what it is, but I trust their assessment skills.

I have noticed after a flurry of activity prior to the draft, the promotions have slowed way down in the second half of the season. I think they finally got folks where they want them. The only promotions we will see will be due to injuries from here on out.

BPro

Under the heading “Playstation Numbers,” BPro points out that Gaston is leading the minor leagues (not just the California League, but all of A, AA, and AAA) in the following categories: homeruns, runs, total bases, and triples.

by AstroAndy on Jul 21, 2009 3:26 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

What accounts for his surge in Homerun power?

He’s hit more homeruns thus far this season than he did in three years of college and his first year in the minor leagues combined.

I suppose that’s the problem when he plays in that league and that ballpark. you start to have difficulty distinguishing how much is a jump in his ability and how much is due to the ballpark. that is an additional reason for moving him up to AA; by doing that, you can get a better idea of what kind of player he is.

His away game splits are still solid. He's 12 of his HRs on the road as a matter of fact.

Entire Season AVG G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS OBP SLG OPS
Away Games .274 48 175 35 48 6 3 12 30 26 55 4 2 .370 .549 .919

Trying to clean up the stats...

AVG G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS OBP SLG OPS
.274 48 175 35 48 6 3 12 30 26 55 4 2 .370 .549 .919

by Irish Pete on Jul 21, 2009 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Basically...

He’s going .274/.370/.549 on the road for an OPS of .919

And he’s hit 12 of his 27 home runs on the road.

55 Ks in 175 ABs isn’t great, but that would be just about his only knock.

I spoke too soon...

Jon Gaston, two more long balls, in some of the hottest weather that Lancaster has to offer. It was the only day game of the summer, it was “wet n wild.” Along the right field line they set up Misters that would turn on every half inning. $2 Concessions and well of course, as mentioned, two home runs for Gaston his 26th, and 27th. Jethawks win 5-1 Leandro Cespedes seemed not to be affected by the heat, and continues to be the Jethawks winningest pitcher.

Well

They should probably promote Locke to AAA and bench Abercrombie. That would open up a spot for Gaston in AA. Just a thought, since I don’t think anyone views Abercrombie as our OF solution of the future, unless we’re talking about Jason Michaels replacement.

by jmike on Jul 22, 2009 9:51 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I like what Abercrombie brings in every aspect compared to Michaels.

1. He’s a better defensive replacement due to better range in the OF and a better arm if memory serves me correctly.
2. He’s faster, so he could actually be a pinch runner that would threaten the other team.
3. He can’t be worse at the plate, especially pinch hitting… Jason Michaels is 5 for 33 as a PH with no HRs. Reggie Abercrombie is 7 for 28 in his career pinch hitting. Last year, Reggie was 4 for 12 pinch hitting with 2 HRs.

Unfortunately

Reggie is not on the 40-man. Neither are Norris or Bazardo, for that matter. It looks like we’re up to 39 with the acquisition of Coste and Duran (who’s on the DL in Corpus), so much more movement is going to require somebody to get dropped. I know we’d all like it to be Erstad, Michaels, or Kata-types, but I’m not sure that’s really going to happen.

Cespedes is not leading the JetHawks in wins Chris Hicks has an 8-6 record. Cespedes is second in wins. With reliever Jordan Powell having a 5-1 record too. There are som good arms down in Lancaster despite their losing record. This is what the minors are all about. Developing talent for the majors.

Forgive me for the mistake...

I meant to say quality starts…

Taking

Chad Paronto off the 40 man would be no big loss. Agree that Abercrombie is probably a better backup outfielder than Michaels especially in the power, speed, defense aspects. I think Ed Wade thought Michaels would be better suited to more extensive playing time, if Bourn had struggled again this year. Not saying I agree, but think that was the reasoning.

by jmike on Jul 23, 2009 9:54 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Paronto was added to the 40 man roster when Sampson was put on the DL. Paronto probably will be removed when Sampson returns from the DL.

by clack on Jul 23, 2009 10:30 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I've been thinking

and I wonder if the choice of calling up Paronto was to showcase him for another Reineke-Wolf or Cusack-Hawkins type of deal?

I always forget how this works. If he gets taken off the 40-man, then he’s gotta go through waivers, right? Or does he go through waivers if they send him down period? They still have one spot open on the 40-man and Sampson won’t take up another slot when he comes back (only on the 15-day DL). They may keep Paronto on the 40-man unless they see a trade/waiver opportunity. After rosters expand, though, all bets are off.

by AstroAndy on Jul 23, 2009 11:51 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Paronto

was sporting a 1.67 ERA, with a 0.96 WHIP and 27K/9BB in 32.1 innings at Round Rock, all as a reliever (15 saves and only 1 HR allowed). I think he was just the right guy to call up, based on the AAA results.

Hopefully he gets some more chances to prove that Tuesday’s outing was a fluke. I’m not sure if the Astros are interested in shipping him, but he’s not a young guy (34 next week), so I think other teams would target the Sampson and Hawkins types if what they’re looking for is bullpen help for right now.

I think you’re right about Paronto having to pass through waivers if we take him off the 40-man, but I’m always fuzzy on those rules. Not sure if he needs to pass through waivers just to be sent down, though.

by littlevisigoth on Jul 23, 2009 12:37 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m not certain about Paronto and don’t feel like trying to research it right now. but I think Paronta is out of options (not surprising at his age) and has to pass through waivers again. but I also agree with LVG that Paronta’s age and career history wouldn’t make him much of a trading chip.

I wouldn’t be opposed to trading Norris and Bazardo if you could get a top of the rotation pitcher in return. but I don’t think either guy is rated that highly by other organizations; they would be viewed as mid-range type prospects. heck, Bazardo was available to any team who wanted to sign him before the season began. but I wouldn’t want to deal our young A-ball pitchers, especially for a 32 year old pitcher (in Halliday’s case). I don’t think the Astros would consider dealing Castro, and rightly so, given the shape of the farm system. It is possible that Towles may have some trading value.

If the Astros make a trade, I think it will be more of a “under the radar” type deal.

Gaston Makes BA's Prospect Hot Sheet at #11
A seventh-round pick last year out of Arizona, Gaston didn’t show many signs of future success when he hit .193/.292/.285 in his debut at short-season Tri-City. But the Astros promoted him aggressively to high Class A Lancaster this season, and he’s responded with a breakout year. Thanks to a pair of two-home run games this week, Gaston took over the minor league lead in home runs with 27. He also leads the minors in triples (14), extra-base hits (64), runs scored (88), total bases (243) and slugging percentage (.673). Lancaster is a fabulous place to hit, and Gaston’s true ability rests somewhere between his .339/.422/.790 line at home and his less overheated .274/.370/.549 performance on the road.

Justin Smoak is on their Not So Hot list. I guess because he really should have adjusted to AAA pitching by now…he’s just spent so long in the minors….I mean, it’s been over a year since he was drafted for goodness sake! He better improve on that .167/.263/.258 line, otherwise he’s just doomed to be an organizational player.
