Looks like

Manny’s dreads got longer during his vacation.

I'm a little nervous about pitching to Manny in this game.

First game back home. He got a thunderous ovation when the starting rotation was announced. He seems to have big days in these situations.

Yeah

This is the kind of game Manny will hit a homerun to celebrate the moment

So… only 3/5 are pitchers’ ballparks.

nice play, Hunter. Is Pence the anti-Manny?

by clack on Jul 16, 2009 9:21 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I thought of Vlad as the anti-Manny

(Manny: patient, deliberate at the plate vs. Vlad: grip-it-and-rip-it; same results for both, generally)

And the Vlad comparison was brought up yesterday for Hunter, so… yeah, it kinda makes sense.

Was I the only one steamed about...

Ryan Howard getting the nod over Hunter? He was pretty much guaranteed to hit a home run or strike out. His average is below .260. Hunter can at least get a single if he doesnt go deep.

by Astrofan on Jul 16, 2009 9:26 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think it was necessarily a baseball decision. probably a combination of favortism by Manuel and the desire to let Howard bat in his hometown.

by clack on Jul 16, 2009 9:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

im steamed

at manuel…wasnt suprised at the decision…Manuel calling on his own Philly to PH…Manuels an idiot…sorta like Cooper, he refused for a while to bat Ibanez 5th bcz he wanted to break up Righties and Lefties…i disagree with that Shit so much these days ESPECIASLLY with Pence and Blum!

by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Jul 16, 2009 9:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah it wasn't really a surprise

There were 3 position players left: Sanchez, Pence and Howard. Either of the first 2 would have been a better choice. Had it been 0 or 1 outs I would have been ok with Howard up there but not with 2 outs. You got 2 men in scoring position and you have to score there. Ryan Howard strikes out way too much to go up in that situation.

Depends on the cost

as well as CJ’s progression at Round Rock. Obviously Manzella isn’t the SS of the future so hed just be a stop gap anyways. I think if we can get Miggy to move to 3rd and take a 1yr 5MM? contract, he’ll be back.

Spotlight Q

Like to see us get a run when you least expect it.

As for the left side of the infield next year …. Chris Johnson seems like a dud to me. He obviously could still progress but you can’t put any kind of stock into him. From what I hear … Manzella is an Everett… which might not be a bad stop gap for 3 or 4 years until hopefully Jiovanni Mier comes up and is the real deal. But besides CJ, Manzella, Tejada and/or Keppinger & Blum there really aren’t many options.

Long shot … but I have always been a fan of Jack Wilson and would love to see him at SS and Tejada at 3rd next year. But that would probably cost too mch money

Probably. Strikes out too much, doesn’t walk at all. Still, anything’s possible.

I think people throw around Everett’s name too much. Manzella is reportedly a good fielder, but not Everett-like.

well, Lima's certainly on the Rushmore of Astros' characters

Oswalt has been, throughout his career, the best pitcher the Astros have ever had, so he seems like a good choice.

Ryan is most associated with the Astros, so there’s a good argument to be made there.

Wynn, Cruz, Cedeno, and (oddly enough) Biggio belong on the Astros’ Rushmore of Fantastic Hitters Who Were Totally Ignored in Their Primes.

A Rushmore of Astros hitters…I definitely like Cedeno on that one….good call

Pitchers: Oswalt, JR Richard, Dierker, and it’s a tossup between Niekro and Mike Scott for me

I feel like, when it comes to Nolan Ryan, the Astros are the less attractive, sure thing girl that he’d ditch in a second if the hot chick from Arlington gave him a call. Although he was great, I gotta admit feeling like he’s rejected us a few too many times to put him on my Rushmore.

I think Tejada brings a lot to this team that is not seen. If the price is right … would love to see him back here next year at third base.

I attribute Tejada’s season this year to just him making adjustments. If you look at the majority of ball players that play for many years and for many teams they constantly have to make adjustments. Tejada seems to be doing that. He’s no longer a power (middle of the order) hitter. Whether that’s due to steroids or not … he has adjusted and made himself a valuable ball player again. I think he still has 2 or 3 good seasons left of being a contact spray hitter.

matsui with RBI hit.

I’m surprised matsui got a good hit from that side of the plate against Mota.

Matsui singles home Lee

I guess Cooper knew what he was doing batting Matusi seventh instead of second

From an interview with her

CP: What do you want to be when you “grow up”?

Erin Wade: I always wanted to work in the music industry. Not as a singer, but as a manager or in public relations. The more I work in sports, the more I want to stay in sports.

CP: As an agent?

Erin Wade: No way. With my dad? That would be his worst nightmare if his daughter became an agent.

No TV here :(

Up 3-0, we’ve already scored enough runs to win the game.

Was Wandy pinch hit for because he was clearly tiring in the 6th inning? Not a big fan of taking out a starter until he gets into trouble. I know he’s thrown 108 pitches, but he’s not exactly a hard-throwing lefty.

by goingforthecorner on Jul 16, 2009 11:26 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think Cooper just made up his mind to bat Blum because he wanted runs out of the inning.

And great job, Arias, by the way.

by clack on Jul 16, 2009 11:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

he throws fairly hard for a lefty, actually

But you’re right. He’s 30 years old and his arm is no longer as much of a risk (though he does have an injury history…) I’d be willing to let him go another inning.

Does anybody else think we might try stretching Arias out for next season?

He’s done really well out of the bullpen, so you’d hate to move him out of that environment.

But his curve is pretty sick tonight, and his FB is getting up to 96. I’d love to see that over more than just an inning or two at a time.

by AstroAndy on Jul 16, 2009 11:27 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I always wanted to see Arias given a shot at the rotation. But, frankly, he has been so good in relief that I hate to move him out of this role. He seems to thrive in pressure situations. He could be a very valuable late inning reliever.

by clack on Jul 16, 2009 11:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Didn't the Astros try him as a starter twice last year?

I want to say that the first was a success, and the second was that awful game in Florida after the Milwaukee Massacre when it rained most of the game.

I like it.

Yeah, all I really remember from the game was that he had a very tough start, and the rain didn’t help. I remember him falling off the mound at one point. I think there was a rain delay called after that.

Your friendly neighborhood Dream Shake mod.

by Only_A_Lad on Jul 16, 2009 11:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t remember the game, but the rain delay would explain why he got pulled after only 2.2 IP.

by AstroAndy on Jul 16, 2009 11:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

that was just an awful series.

Actually, it was an awful week or two for the Astros and Houston in general.

We tried him as a starter...

wasn’t all that great. Hes seems to have found a niche in the bullpen and hes doing a huge job of it. He seems like he can be our 8th inning set up man and hopefully soon we’ll have CJ Lo closing out games. The bullpen can get a lot younger soon.

by Astrofan on Jul 16, 2009 11:29 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I kind of liked what I saw of Arias as a starter. He had some trouble with walks, but I think that was just an adjustment period to the majors.

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.
