I suppose that’s the punishment he gets for stopping his hitting streak. :)

relatively quick inning

Hampton got a pretty generous call for that strike out, though.

Maysonet gets another hit.

Grounder up the middle…an approach he has taken quite often so far. He keeps showing it was a good idea to call him up.

2 out hits.... Happened in each inning of this game so far.

Astros seem to get more than their share of them. I wonder if there is a way to tweak the lineup to avoid that? If I were manager, I would probably run the numbers on that to find out.

by clack on Jun 5, 2009 7:40 PM CDT reply actions

Astros should use Hampton as pinch hitter

I said it last game he pitched and I say it again. He has nine hits so far this year and looks good at the plate

I agree.

Both Backe and Ortiz are good enough to use as pinch hitters too.

by clack on Jun 5, 2009 7:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Sac fly by Keppinger scores Hampton.

He almost got 2 RBI, Bourn went to 3d on the sac fly, and he aggressively thought about going all the way home. But Pirates got the ball in quickly.

Very EFFICIENT inning for the Astos

2 base runners, 2 runs.

What’s up? Is the moon full or something?

"Lee, a drive to left field. Here comes Pence from second trying to score. The throw to the plate and Pence is … safe! Now a quick throw to first and they get Lee on the force – that’s 7 to 2 to 3 for those of you at home keeping score….."

Adam LaRoche was very unhappy with McLouth trade.

He had some scathing criticism for the Pirates front office. Anonymous players in the Pirates’ clubhouse were running down the players the Pirates got in return. I wonder how that affects the Pirates’ team psyche.

by clack on Jun 5, 2009 8:02 PM CDT reply actions

The fans in Atlanta

are moaning too. Nobody seems particularly pleased.

The Pirates probably got the better end of the deal, but some year they are going to have to break out of their seemingly perpetual “rebuilding” phase!

"Lee, a drive to left field. Here comes Pence from second trying to score. The throw to the plate and Pence is … safe! Now a quick throw to first and they get Lee on the force – that’s 7 to 2 to 3 for those of you at home keeping score….."

Update on Alberto Arias

Alberto Arias, who was experiencing mild concussion-like symptoms after being struck in the head by a thrown ball during batting practice Friday, is listed as day-to-day after a CT scan showed no abnormalities.

Astros general manager Ed Wade said Arias might have been temporarily blinded by the sun because Minute Maid Park’s retractable roof was open. Rodriguez didn’t have an explanation.

“I was playing catch with him and he missed the ball,” Rodriguez said. “I don’t know what happened.”

Arias spent about three minutes on the ground being checked out by team medical personnel before being driven off the field. He was taken to The Methodist Hospital for tests but returned to the ballpark in time for Friday’s game against the Pirates.

I would expect that Arias

will find a huge oversized glove in his locker tomorrow.

I thought Lidge was done for Houston

I think Lidge has a tendency to get off the track, in terms of mechanics...

from time to time. And when he does, he can have a poor string of games. When he is in a groove, though, he is among the best pitchers around.

Hampton out of the sixth

Wonder if he can manage?

funny how Hampton was all but lefft for dead a couple of weeks ago.

anonymous scouts were being quoted as saying Hampton didn’t have any physical ability left. In his last two starts, he has been great. You look at his stuff tonight, and it is crisp.

Blum hit one to within inches of the RF wall

but threw his bat down in disgust right after he hit the ball-did he really know?

by bwhite2323 on Jun 5, 2009 8:43 PM CDT reply actions

I noticed the same thing.

He must have known he didn’t get all of it, but maybe it came closer to going out than he thought.

by clack on Jun 5, 2009 8:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Two things

1. Blum knew his ball was not long enough immediately even though it was a yard away from a homerun

2. Berkman went to second on the fly – almost another a baserunning statistic but actually made it in plenty of time

then as i typed he stole third!!!! (I recall him being caught at least twice recently trying for third)
