That's weird, if there was no bench role for Edwin Maysonet, why is Matt Kata in tonight's line up?

can't tell
but I could make out “roid” last night. I assume it’s about the same thing today.

To say that this guy throws junk is an understatement. Of course, he’ll probably end up no hitting the Astros for the rest of the game. He got a K on Carlos Lee with 84 mph fastball.
not necessarily
if he’s good at hitting his spots and mixing it up, then even good hitters will have trouble with a “junkballer.”
Though, looking at his stats over the past few years and in the minors, he doesn’t appear to be particularly successful.
Your friendly neighborhood Dream Shake mod.
my original comment about Banks as a junkballer...
was based on the number of pitches he throws. Pitching orthodoxy in MLB is that you hurt yourself if you throw too many pitches. Sort of the “jack of all trades, master of none” idea. (There have been some pitchers who were successful throwing 5 or 6 pitches, but they are treated as “exceptions to the rule.”)
yeah
I saw the pre-game stuff, too.
I thought it was somewhat ironic, given the success Roy had last night, and he throws like three different types of fastballs, a slider, curve (and sometimes he has that harder, faster, less loopy curve he throws), and changeup.
Your friendly neighborhood Dream Shake mod.
sorry, I assumed you had
(I figured knowledge of Josh Banks’ repertoire is obscure enough that few would know about it off-hand)
They were talking about how he throws like 8 or 9 different pitches, and Howe repeated the conventional wisdom about that (and everyone had a good laugh about the Padres and their “AAA players,” which I thought was tempting fate). He’s right in that pitchers like that generally don’t have much success, but I think Roy (like Mussina or Maddux) is a good counterexample. Of course, Roy has good control and throws much harder, but still.

I don’t think they count varations on the types of fastball, slider, etc. probably means more like throwing completely different pitches..like palmballs, knucklers, splitters, etc.
hey, remember when Oswalt was talking about breaking out his high-school knuckleball?
That would be cool. Probably completely ineffective, but cool nonetheless.
Your friendly neighborhood Dream Shake mod.
Woody Williams supposedly had a knuckler...
that Wakefield’s catcher said was the best he had ever seen. He threw it a bit in SD. For some reason, he didn’t throw it in Houston.
Backe might be gone
but the Astros are still using his commercials.

And that, ladies and gentlemen
is why Coop is an idiot for batting Geoff Blum ahead of Hunter Pence in the lineup
I think the alternating-left-and-righthanded-batters thing has got to be the absolutely least supportable thing Coop does.
there is no freaking reason Blum should be batting ahead of Pence in this lineup
yeah, I’ve never been impressed with alternating lefty.righty hitters. sure, mix up lefties and righties in the batting order. but the strict alternating approach is aimed at a very limited situation in the game which is relatively infrequent (i.e., changing relief pitchers).
well, I think it's a good idea to do it.
I think the Phillies have a tendency to hurt themselves by batting three lefties in a row in the middle of their order (particularly when they still had Burrell).
But it’s not something you should do when the drop-off between the two hitters is as big as Blum and Pence. Pence has such a tiny platoon split, anyways.

Pujols is at 30 HR. J.D. and/or Brownie was curious about how Pujols’s season so-far compares to Mark McGuire’s 70 HR season in 1998.
Answer: 78 games into the 1998 season, McGuire had 37 HR.
Pujols is on pace for a 62 HR season.

The answer to the trivia question, of course,
is Padres slugger John Kruk, who saw action in both the Cola Wars and the Fast Food Wars.

So that’s why the Nationals made that trade…just so they could have more players for the make up game with the Astros.
I asked a similar question at the tme
I think we decided as long as the actual person doesn’t play again for the same team, it’s okay

you know,
I’ve been thinking about this: Why do we tend to think of “inflated” offense as bad? Why do baseball fans and commentators seem to think that offense-favoring stadiums (or teams like the Phoenix Suns in other sports) are somehow impure or something?
Your friendly neighborhood Dream Shake mod.
aesthetics is part of it. I think of high scoring baseball games as sloppy and tiresome. I think defense is better than offense in most sports for winning, as an excessive generality.
I like the anus face he makes

Makeup game on July 9
OK. So if the rule in the “makeup” game with the Nats is that we can use any player that wasn’t already used in the game on May 5th, then here’s what our reserves look like:
Bench:
Quintero
Kata
Matsui
Pitching:
Arias
Fulchino
Valverde
(Hampton, Moehler, Ortiz, Wandy, Paulino)
I hope that Coop takes this into account when he’s making his pitching selections on July 8.
First things first
As I recall Nationals start the bottom of the inning with a man on first and no outs. If Nationals score the game is over. Astros must get out of that initial at-bat to worry about bench players.

astros.com said it would be 1 out with a man on first. but, like you, I thought it was no outs from my memory.
A report
The game was halted with LaTroy Hawkins — Houston’s fifth pitcher — about to face Josh Willingham with one runner on first and one out in the bottom of the 11th. After a wait of about 75 minutes — and with heavy rain still falling — the game was suspended.

I have seen some criticism at BBTF of Bud Black's bunt-happy ways..
now I see it in action. Black’s explanation is that he doesn’t have good hitters, so he has to use small ball. Eckstein is a big cheerleader for small ball and endorses Black’s view.
Padres sacrifice bunt with one out???

And for the second time tonight, with a man on and two outs and Coops fantastic lineup construction, we don’t have Hunter Pence batting, but instead, Geoff Blum
Dammit I hate that blum is a starter on this team. Its ok…he hasn’t done anything tonight so I can criticize him.
you're not a realist, friendo
you apparently think the Astros’ bullpen is bad, which is, well, the opposite of the truth.
Your friendly neighborhood Dream Shake mod.
Quote me where I said the bullpen was bad? The pen is one of the strengths of the team this year with contributions from Arias, Hawk and Fulchino. That being said, the pen hasn’t been getting the job done the last few series. Valverde cost us a game against the Royals and the Tigers and Sampson blew a 3 run lead tonight.
See, Astro"fan"
if you’re going to make a dumb statement, at least have the balls to back it up.
Your friendly neighborhood Dream Shake mod.
“Once again our bullpen gets the job done”
Referring to the performance as of late
"Sampson Saved Blowsave Valverde the trouble"
In Valverde’s last 3 appearances he has an ERA of 6.
While those are more objective and reasonable statements
Most of us around here don’t like basing our in-game gut reactions about the team on small sample sizes.
If you think we’re being harsh, you should see the boards over at spikes’n’stars.
I don't think anyone is being harsh
If you think Im over reacting thats fine with me. Maybe I am. I just hate to see the astros blow leads, especially in games against bad teams like the Pads. Its frustrating. While the division is a cluster fuck, I just don’t see the Astros being able to capitalize on it. I want them to. But at the same time, I want guys like Norris and Bazardo to get a shot and I’m not sure we’ll see that. Coop seems to have disdain for younger guys.
It was a tough loss, tonight, but it’s a long season. We’ve still got two more shots at the Pads, and hopefully we’ll come out of the series with more W’s than L’s.
I want guys like Norris and Bazardo to get a shot and I’m not sure we’ll see that. Coop seems to have disdain for younger guys
This is a common sentiment around here, although I personally only want to see Norris up here if his change-up is big-league ready or they’ve decided he should be a reliever.
we can’t joke about the Padres having a AAA team when we are relying on Matt Kata to keep our chances alive in the 9th.

the whole time Bourn was in the box I was thinking Minnesota.. and then he pulled the ball, scorched it, but Gwynn Jr. played it well…
