Why is Geoff Blum ahead of Pence in this line up?

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.
Probably true

I have to go with the Gywnns
There was something poetic about watching him hit that walk off against the Padres in 2007 when he was with the Brewers.

Carlos Lee on the bases...
I’d wager that Carlos Lee has made the most outs on the bases this season. I love El Cab-horse-o, but his nickname rings true… he runs like he has horse blinders on. Oh, and also, Cecil Cooper should be fired. Discuss?
I think you'll find the answer around here is likely to be a resounding
YES

and it's not like many of us were calling for his head before the season, either
I think there was a consensus (at least amongst the regulars) that Coop was at least learning what he does wrong and fixing those problems. But then he started doing the same shit again.

yeah, well
it was still a bad decision. Not looking both ways before you cross the highway might not kill you 100% of the time, but you still shouldn’t do it.

I know you've got the run probability chart
but that only tells you what the odds are like for an average pitcher facing an average batter, and that wasn’t the situation
then pitch around him

Pudge's 7th HR
The last time Brad Ausmus had 7 HR in a full season was the year 2000. Ausmus only hit 7 HR or more 3 times since 1993.
Ausmus...
I am glad that Dartmouth hole in the line-up is gone. I sure am glad he “called such good games” though. Barf. When someone says a catcher calls good games, it’s code for he hits under .200 and sucks.
by Fiction Rider on Jun 29, 2009 10:09 PM CDT up reply actions
meh
I’m willing to admit that we don’t have any good measurements of catcher defense, and so that might really have made up for his bad hitting.
Your friendly neighborhood Dream Shake mod.
I believe that his game-calling was a difference-maker
but it’s not just chicks that dig the long-ball
see
that’s what I’m talking about. Controlling the running game isn’t all of a catcher’s defensive contributions.
Your friendly neighborhood Dream Shake mod.
Catching is a thankless position...
but the only requirements should be he stays healthy, hits .320 with 100 RBIs, and can throw the ball back to the pitcher without any major muck ups.
by Fiction Rider on Jun 29, 2009 10:15 PM CDT up reply actions
Well,
if you can get a great offensive catcher, then defense just isn’t an issue.
But defense is an undervalued commodity in baseball, and finding a catcher who can block the plate and keep balls in front of him and do all of what a catcher has to do on defense very well is possibly an acceptable substitute for a purely average catcher.
Your friendly neighborhood Dream Shake mod.

well
I’m not asking whether or not either is a likely scenario. Just what’s the more likely of the two.
I think it’s pretty clear Pudge just wants to play as long as he can. Besides, he has an outside shot at 3000 hits if he can stay in the game. But that would require a starting gig, and I’m pretty sure we won’t give him one.
On the other hand, I think Coop’s going to be fired by September, so there’s that.
