Why is Geoff Blum ahead of Pence in this line up?

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Pitcher's got a 5+ ERA

That means we’re gonna get no hit through the 5th at least. :p

I have to go with the Gywnns

There was something poetic about watching him hit that walk off against the Padres in 2007 when he was with the Brewers.

Carlos Lee on the bases...

I’d wager that Carlos Lee has made the most outs on the bases this season. I love El Cab-horse-o, but his nickname rings true… he runs like he has horse blinders on. Oh, and also, Cecil Cooper should be fired. Discuss?

and it's not like many of us were calling for his head before the season, either

I think there was a consensus (at least amongst the regulars) that Coop was at least learning what he does wrong and fixing those problems. But then he started doing the same shit again.

Came across this article today showing how the camera angle behind the pitcher can distort the home viewer’s perception of balls and strikes.

They argue that instead of having the camera offset to the right of the pitcher by about 15 degrees, we should have the camera directly in line with the pitcher and the plate.

The last time Brad Ausmus had 7 HR in a full season was the year 2000. Ausmus only hit 7 HR or more 3 times since 1993.

Ausmus...

I am glad that Dartmouth hole in the line-up is gone. I sure am glad he “called such good games” though. Barf. When someone says a catcher calls good games, it’s code for he hits under .200 and sucks.

Catching is a thankless position...

but the only requirements should be he stays healthy, hits .320 with 100 RBIs, and can throw the ball back to the pitcher without any major muck ups.

by Fiction Rider on Jun 29, 2009 10:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well,

if you can get a great offensive catcher, then defense just isn’t an issue.

But defense is an undervalued commodity in baseball, and finding a catcher who can block the plate and keep balls in front of him and do all of what a catcher has to do on defense very well is possibly an acceptable substitute for a purely average catcher.

Only city with a built-in air-conditioner. My Dad and I went, brought windbreakers, and were comfortable. Fish Tacos on the pier restaurant were a great call.

that's a good question, too

What the hell are the Astros going to do with Towles?

I mean, provided they don’t trade Pudge or something. And I think that’s pretty doubtful for a variety of reasons.

by Only_A_Lad on Jun 29, 2009 10:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can't guess

It could be one, both or neither.

Does Pudge have any more milestones he can reach in the next year?

Cooper’s fate depends on how the team performs in August and September

Astros fan for life

by Joe in Birmingham on Jun 29, 2009 10:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

well

I’m not asking whether or not either is a likely scenario. Just what’s the more likely of the two.

I think it’s pretty clear Pudge just wants to play as long as he can. Besides, he has an outside shot at 3000 hits if he can stay in the game. But that would require a starting gig, and I’m pretty sure we won’t give him one.

On the other hand, I think Coop’s going to be fired by September, so there’s that.

He has yet to have a full season of calling pitches.

And more importantly, IMO, he’s not stayed in any one place long enough to have to make adjustments, a crucial skill for a major league player to have.
