Good news per Footer (via Twitter)

from my baseball ops friends: mier singles in first two at bats

Not only did Mier single in his first professional at-bat, it was on the first pitch.

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Laird looks to be suffering from a groin tweak

Bourn on second, Tejada on 1st. Lee at the plate 1-1 count.

Bourn bunted on and Tejada was HBP

Still not sure?

Great!! start by Paulino! But I am stil not sure about the decision to get rid of the only long relief guy (Baacke) when 2 guys are making their first starts off disable list. Hopefully it works out.

by Cor on Jun 27, 2009 6:21 PM CDT reply actions

It's puts at a bit of a disadvantage

But it’s not like Backe was a) effective in that role or b) effective in any other role

Arais and Fulchino are guys who can be stretched a few innings and so can Sampson, so I think we’ll survive.

I'm impressed by Paulino through 2 innings.

he has been very sharp. I was thinking he might come out off-target early, since he hadn’t pitched in a awhile.

Me too

Hopefully he doesn’t fatigue and lose that, but so far—so good.

Difference between first string and second string catcher

Tigers young catcher having a tough go so far. Beside that passed ball, a more experienced catcher woud have gotten Paulino’s bunt popup.

the press in Chicago in something. sort of like NY, I guess.

The Chicago papers got someone to tell them what they overhead in the argument between Bradley and Piniella. Piniella called Bradley “A piece of sh*t.” Piniella didn’t deny it but said that comment was made in the sanctuary of the clubhouse and shouldn’t have made it to the press. Bradley wasn’t upset about it. “That’s Lou Piniella. I think Lou Piniella is somebody.”

it was always an issue of Paulino just putting it all together. Sort of like Wandy, I suppose.

Of course, 1 start against a team that has never faced you before isn’t really all that much. This is an impressive start, though.

yeah, I remember

he’s your typical fireball pitcher. He has good nights and bad nights, and he just needs to work on being efficient (like his tonight). I think we all have high hopes for him, and I think at the very least he’ll be a decent starter for us this and next season.

this is more like the Paulino we saw in his first start this year.

even better, really. Paulino looks so much more polished than he did when was a top prospect and made his first ML appearances in 2007. If he has control over that fastball, his breaking pitches become very effective.
