This should be a good pitching match up.  Verlander is coming off of a disappointing outing, but still owns a 3.18 xFIP and a 3.21 tRA.  Wandy, who is coming off an outstanding outing, owns a 3.80 xFIP and a 3.21 tRA.  All signs, both common place and objective, point to a duel.

and he's

0-7 with 6 Strike outs with bases loaded this year.
Looks like he has a few sac runs, but that doesn’t help with 2 outs.

by entropic soul on Jun 26, 2009 7:32 PM CDT up reply actions

heh

small sample size.

But yeah, yet another reason to bat him higher up, I suppose

Cubs and Pirates won today

I watched the last out in the Cubs game on a Gamecast. the last out was a called strikeout .The gamecast showed the ball about a foot outside.

Nice play by Tejada to get to ball

and flip backhand to Matsui for one out; couldn’t get Everett running to first

MLB.com giving me two games at once (a real simulcast)

I am watching and listenging to Astros game; but I’m getting the Diamondback audio broadcast too. I’m trying to selective listen but it ’s a challenge

Wandy's last chance for a W this game

Rests in the hands of Pudge, Matsui and probably Erstad.

so Matt Kata can bat for Wandy

We should have a survey

to decide Kata’s official nickname

I really like “Chris Burke II”, but I also like “Eyebrows”.

Can’t decide.

and Michael Bourn singled

2 on , one out (and the Diamondback audio way louder than the Astros broadcast on MLB.TV)

He needs to remember where he came from..

and maybe drop the ball every once in while like Tejada.

Everett batted .248 for the Astros

and has batted .242 since. His OBP this season is .320

Yes

He probably won’t help us with his fielding, but he may come up to the plate in a critical situation……..

I love watching AL mangers

trying to figure out the double switch. Now Detroit has two outfielders not playing in their preferred position, plus now the pitcher is batting in the middle of the lineup.

Byrdak started the 8th inning for the Astros

With two out and two on, Chris Sampson relieves Byrdak.

Chronicle says that Hampton is ready to come off DL....

and tentatively will pitch Tuesday. We also have Blum and Paulino coming off the DL in the really near future.

Who will lose their major league spots?

by clack on Jun 26, 2009 9:53 PM CDT reply actions

I was wondering that for several innings

you’d think Kata or Maysonet .

Maybe Byrdak and Fulchino (or Backe)

by Joe in Birmingham on Jun 26, 2009 9:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Among pitchers, Wright, Fulchino, Arias, and Paulino are probably the easiest to move down, because I think they don’t have to clear waivers. I don’t really want to move any of them off the ML roster. I would prefer to DFA Backe and hope he clears waivers and agrees to go to Round Rock. But Cooper has already said he is “saving” Backe for Saturday in case Paulino can’t pitch very long.

Among infielders, I regret to say that I believe Maysonet will be sent down, mostly based on Cooper’s usage pattern for him.

my point being that every will fastball he is throwing is like 100 mph or over. I mean, if he dials it down to 95 mph, he might get the ball in the zone.

by clack on Jun 26, 2009 10:17 PM CDT up reply actions

that should be “wild” instead of “will”

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

his interview

says that he hopes somebody else picks him up so he can play in the big leagues

by AstroAndy on Jun 26, 2009 11:01 PM CDT up reply actions

he says he is shocked. not surprisingly, he hopes to have the luck of Nieve and get picked up by someone who will put him on a ML roster.

personally, I doubt any team picks him up, even though it’s always possible that some GM or pitching coach out there has a secret admiration of Backe’s bulldog attitude and will do so. my guess is that Backe ends up back in Round Rock.

by clack on Jun 26, 2009 11:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Ending up working closely with Burt Hooten might be the best thing for him right now.

Post-game guys bring up the point that we don’t have a long reliever for tomorrow, and Paulino could very easily go out after four innings. Sampson’s been used a few games in a row now (I think), Backe’s DFA’d. Is Ortiz or Moehler moving to the ’pen?

by AstroAndy on Jun 26, 2009 11:15 PM CDT up reply actions

with Hampton returning, it seems possible that Ortiz or Moehler could move to the pen. I suppose we will know that answer if Paulino runs out of gas and Ortiz is called upon.
