Hochevar starts with 2 consecutive K's.
The Royals’ pitcher appears to have a dandy breaking pitch tonight. Astros’ players can’t make contact.

Texas -LSU game is exciting
Longhorns load the bases in first and third. Took like forever to finally scoe a run – but did get 2 runs somehow in the third.
LSU Leads 4-2 but there will be many more runs scored from the looks of things

but that’s not nearly as horrible to me as his crap in the field. The light stroll towards first base might cost the Astros a few runs per season. That sucks, but he makes up for it with other hitting skills.
But his defense is so awful, and he just doesn’t seem to give a shit.

He comes off like the unibomber
writing crazy screeds from his bedroom, lecturing the audience.
The biggest problem that the script has, I think, is that it is trying to mimic the format of the book too much. So it has these halting documentary moments when James is glowering at his typewriter/audience or whatever and his voiceover tells us why batting average and errors suck. Then we segue back into the “action,” and the whole thing just feels weird.
I mean, there’s a good way to introduce sabermetrics to the audience, and it’s the same way Beane was introduced to it: Sandy Alderson. Alderson was secretly using all these ideas that James was advocating, and he taught Beane everything he knew.
Maybe if the story is told in a more chronological fashion, moving from Beane as a high schooler to 2002, the whole thing would come across better. We could see Beane fail in a more understandable fashion (in the script, we just see a flashback of him striking out and getting cut from teams; well, that and the Dykstra cameo), then we could get a less weird method for explaining Bill James’ ideas.
Part of the problem is that Moneyball (the book) tries to tell three stories:
1) The A’s vs. the Yankees, Red Sox, etc.
2) The “nerds” vs. the “traditionalists”
3) The young players vs. the scouts.
And, in the book, all of these come across very well. The first story is pretty obvious, and we find out how the A’s take on the wealthy teams almost completely. The second comes across in the “exposition” parts of the book (the bits about James and STATS inc.), as well as in the arguments between Beane/Podesta and the scouting department.
The third is stated explicitly at a few points in the book, but it’s a big subtext throughout the whole thing. Lewis insinuates (though he might very well have flat-out stated it; it’s been a while since I’ve read the book) that Beane’s attraction to stats and aversion to subjective evaluation stems from his failure in professional baseball; he didn’t want other kids to go through what he went through because some scout imagined he could be a star in some heat-stroke induced fantasy.
In the script, though, none of this but the first story is really explored (we get James, the broadcasters, and Morgan for the 2nd, but very little of it seems to fit; the most we ever really get is Art Howe’s speech, and that was just stupid). And even that isn’t very interesting. What’s introduced doesn’t go anywhere, anyways.
I think you could make a good book that tells Moneyball’s story, but you can’t just copy the book’s rhythm, and you have to make more of the picture about the characters. We get that to some degree with Beane, de Podesta, and Hatteburg, but that’s it.
Your friendly neighborhood Dreamshake mod.
here is a writer who read the script and kind of liked it...
His take is that the first and last scene are very good, but the middle part isn’t a great. He thinks the script works pretty well.
I like your idea about tying the story to Bean’s formative years as a young prospect. I think a traditional narrative “chronology” might be called for when the project itself is a subject which is difficult to commercialize.
As for the “unibomber” feel to the James character, the analogy probably isn’t that far off, in terms of a Hollywood story line. To many people, James would seem to be strangely obssessed, as he wrote his articles during his boring hours as a night watchman, and then mimeographed them for a cult of followers.
the only suspense to look forward to now...
is to see whether Cooper is going to lose it in his press conference.
Cooper didn’t say much of note. “this loss is disappointing.” He said the Astros struggle at home and he doesn’t know why.
Pudge's comments.
He used the classic Biggio line: “That’s baseball.”
He was asked about some angry words he had with the Royals bench near the end of the game. He wouldn’t say what he said to them. “That stays on the field.”
Pretty professional comment about it staying on the field. Keeps from creating bulletin board material, anyway. And less likely to get the ol’ chin music tomorrow.
But I’d still like to know what happened out there.
yeah, I missed a lot of the game....
so I don’t know what was going on. Were the Royals doing something to show up the Astros? Steve Sparks said it wasn’t surprising that Pudge didn’t want to make it bulletin board material. However, Sparks said he saw Pudge saying something to the Royals’ first baseman like “if that’s the way you want to play the game, then we can make sure you have a long day tomorrow.”
Just watching the highlight shows
Pudge had a problem with the Royals catcher peek at him giving the signs. I’d think there has to be more to it than that.
Wow
simultaneous post.
The no-peeking thing is one of those unwritten rules, and I think Pudge especially expected Pena to abide by it since he was the catcher.
My best guess
I think when Pena was batting, he may have been trying to peek at where Pudge was setting up. Pudge started jawing at him in the middle of the at-bat and at one point put a finger in his chest, although it didn’t look too confrontational.
yes, that may explain it.
the unwritten code is that someone who “peeks” in an obvious fashion gets a pitch in the ribs. that has been known to happen often enough that if someone peeks, it isn’t obvious.
I read something recently about an opposing team airing complaints about A-Rod. Supposedly, he was yelling “code words” from the batting circle to alert the Yankees batter on the location of the catcher. He may have gotten thrown at in the game, I can’t recall. This struck me as humorous, given A-Rod’s history (e.g., the allegation a few years ago that, as a base runner on 3d base, he called “I got it” when the rookie 3d baseman tried to catch a pop up, causing an error).
