From Bobby Heck's chat last week

Bobby Heck: Tri-City is geared mostly toward college players. The NY-Penn league is mostly toward college players. The Appalachian League is geared to second-year profesional players, advanced high school draft picks and junior college draft picks. The Gulf Coast League is more a first-year landing spot for players from Latin America as well as some of your high school draft who may need additional acclimation to profesional baseball. [Bushue and Nash are] heading to the Gulf Coast to start. That doesn’t meant they’ll end the season there.

I voted just right

In Bobby Heck we trust.

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

as did I

mostly because there’s no way for us to know where these guys should go, anyways. It seems to conform to Heck’s description of each team’s role, though.

Yeah I have no idea how people can say too conservative

because you have no idea how far along these kids skills are. they might put them somewhere because they are raw and need their skills sharpened before they face certain types of competition.

Bushue and Nash are both pretty raw high schoolers, so while they may be the highest-picked players, they are definitely not the “best” if by best we mean “advanced.” As you can see, most of our high schoolers (with the exception of Jonathan Meyer, who’s regarded as an advanced high school hitter) are headed to the GCL, with comm. colleges (Humphrey)/small college (Williams)/raw college (Hyatt) guys being sent to Greeneville and the “polished” or more advanced college guys (Wikoff, Walker, etc.) being sent to Tri-City

Curios to know

IF/when Mier signs, where would he be sent to?

anyone got a guess?

by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Jun 23, 2009 9:15 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I have no idea

But my hope would be that we don’t push him very hard to start. There’s no need to overmatch him to start his pro career at all.

n00b here..

When is it likely that Mier signs??

by PeteyNhtown on Jun 23, 2009 6:24 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

who knows?

Ortiz at the Chronicle seems to think it could occur in the near future. But I wouldn’t take anything for granted.

it's possible that both are right

Doesn’t Selig want teams going over slot recommendations to wait to announce signings? While Mier is expected to sign for the slot money, it’s possible he might want something more (slot recommendations went down this year, so maybe he wanted something more in line with what he would have gotten last year or next).

I think the Astros cannot say that he is signed until he passes his physical.

Mier said he has an agreement, pending the results of the physical later this week.

Mier

I bet he’ll end up in the GCL, but Greeneville is not out of the question. That’s as high as he’ll be though. He seems raw offensively, so a “beginners” league like the GCL would make sense, as he’ll get to learn how to hit pro ball at the lowest level instead of being overwhelmed.

by astrosfanforever on Jun 24, 2009 7:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

remember that Heck said...

players might start at GCL but quickly move up to another level before the season is over.

by clack on Jun 24, 2009 10:45 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn’t be surprised to see that happen, but I’d also be surprised to see Mier start above the GCL, considering his bat is a little behind, and a little acclimation never hurts. Expect him to end up with Greeneville (or maybe even Tri-City) and begin next year with Lexington.

From what I've read

Mier seems to have the kind of mental toughness that is necessary to start at Greeneville instead of the GCL. And Jay Austin, our second round pick last year, has been put through the system aggressively, even though his stats might not support it.

I think the most persuasive evidence of Mier’s placement is just the roster construction at both Greeneville and the GCL. The GCL roster has 3 SS already, and 7 IF total. Greeneville only has 2 SS, and one of them is Jonathan Meyer, a guy that was basically drafted as a 3B (even though he was a SS in HS). So my guess is Greeneville.

Good Call

I also like your comparison to Jay Austin, who is a 18/19 year old spending the year in Lexington, which is what I see Mier doing. Hopefully he’ll do better than Austin though (offensively)

The unofficial scorer has some links to the Greenville and Tri-City boxscores. Both teams won. Meyer and Orloff got hits.
