After one inning

It’s the Astros 3, Twins 0. Small ball sparked the offense in the top of the first with Bourn bunt and SB, then Kepp had a 1B, Tejada had a ground rule double, Lee RBI fielder’s choice, and Hunter Pence an RBI 2B.

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

either I'm the only one here or I have the same problem...

getting other people’s comments I had yesterday. Astros take a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning. Bourn singles, came all the way home on a Keppinger single up the middle.Tejada with ground rule double. Bourn scores and Kepp to 3d. Lee drives in Kepp. Pence doubles.

Astros score 3 in the first

Bourn bunt single (steals second)
Scored on Keppinger single.
Tejada Doubled
Lee and Berkman let the team down by grounding out (okay – Keppinger did score on Carlos Lee ground out )
Hunter Pence doubled
Pudge flied out to end the inning

I like that idea (the pitcher's being employed by the position players)

I think it’s the Roy Oswalt way

The idea

Is that the pitcher gets out there, doesn’t waste time between pitches, etc. So the fielders are alert, get on and off the field quickly and then the fielders reward them with runs.

Wandy gives up a HR....

the score stands at 3-1. Moehler said after last night game that HRs don’t bother him—referencing the fact that he gave up 32 HRs one year—as long as doesn’t give up walks. Maybe the same thinking could apply to Wandy. Wandy started the season with apparent luck on the HR front and has been regressing significantly toward “normalizing” his HRs in the last few games.

Yeah

He’s really rushing it back up to the mean. But he could just be feeling charitable.

Gomez has a 37" vertical leap. I am sure this will come in very handy during the All Star Game’s slam-dunk contest.

Too bad we won't see Blyleven in the booth today.

I would be interested in is comments on Wandy’s curveball. Blyleven had the reputation of throwing the best curveball in ML history.

Blyleven was very complimentary of Oswalt and courteous in his compliments about Moehler.

I don’t recall hearing a reason…they did say that Cuddyer was making a rare start at 1st base, which contributed to the Twins’ inability to stop Bourn from bunt hitting in the 1st.

by clack on Jun 21, 2009 2:46 PM CDT up reply actions

he's been scuffling lately for us

and this is his first day off all year. LH starting, day off for Twins Monday, Gardy decided to give him a break

by Only_A_Lad on Jun 21, 2009 2:46 PM CDT reply actions

Gomez is a really, really good CFer. Young made a spectacular play the other day, but he isn’t really a very good outfielder.

by clack on Jun 21, 2009 2:48 PM CDT up reply actions

irrationally

that weird roll he does when he throws bugs me – probably has more to do with his ability to hit bunt singles

by ol Pete on Jun 21, 2009 2:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Gomez steals a HR from Carlos Lee...

but Astros still get a run on a Tejada sac fly to take a 4-1 lead.

by clack on Jun 21, 2009 2:47 PM CDT reply actions

Astros score

and would have scored more except Gomez caught Carlos Lee’s almost homerun at the centerfield “wall”

Arias is apparently warming up

WHY?

Your friendly neighborhood Dreamshake mod.

by Only_A_Lad on Jun 21, 2009 2:51 PM CDT reply actions

well, he's thrown 105 pitches

so it’s not like it’s awful or anything. But he hasn’t shown any signs of tiring. He’s still got great command. With a guy over the age of 25 or so, THAT needs to be the test.

by Only_A_Lad on Jun 21, 2009 2:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Wandy has thrown over 100 pitchers

He’ll be over 110 by the end of this inning

That’s probably the reason

We'll trade you

Gomez and Delmon for Pence and Bourn. We’ll throw in a AAA pitcher or something too. Deal?

heh

no thanks.

by Only_A_Lad on Jun 21, 2009 2:55 PM CDT up reply actions

funny thing is that the Astros reportedly tried to trade for Gomez...

when he was with the Mets, and before he was traded to the Twins. The Astros apparently had Gomez rated better than Bourn, and would have traded Lidge for him if the Mets had agreed (which they didn’t).

by clack on Jun 21, 2009 2:57 PM CDT up reply actions

If that doesn't work, how about we keep out respective center fielders

and Astros trade four legendary baseball players (JR Towles, Kazuo Matsui, Jason Smith, and a reliever to be named later) for that Mauer guy?

You know,

for a series that featured the Astros (who don’t have a lot of power this year) and the Twins (who are supposedly all about small ball or something), the last three games had a lot of homers.

Your friendly neighborhood Dreamshake mod.

by Only_A_Lad on Jun 21, 2009 3:25 PM CDT reply actions

Twins or known for small ball...but they are hitting a lot of homers this year.

JD said yesterday that the Twins have 5 players with 10 or more HRs, which is the first time they have done that before the halfway mark since 1980-something.
