Kevin Slowey is a good young pitcher for the Twins, but I think the Astros offense holds the key for this series. Unlike against Texas, the Astros offense is not overmatched by this Twins lineup tonight. Specifically, the bottom three: Young, Gomez and Punto, are about as light hitting a trio as you'll find in any AL lineup. Now they may all hit the ball hard tonight and prove me to be a fool, but the odds are against it. If the Astros want to go home with a winning road trip, they must take at least 2/3 in Minnesota. If Houston can take advantage of the bottom of the lineup's relative weakness, and score some runs of our own, the series becomes that much more win-able.

Al over at Bleed Cubbie Blue....

said the Twins’ team was the most fundamentally sound team he can remember seeing in 10 or 15 years. Apparently, the Twins don’t beat themselves, move runners over, execute well, etc. That was an interesting observation and makes me kind of curious to see the Twins.

steve sparks made an interesting statement about the metrodome (pre-game show)...

he said the pressure used to keep the dome inflated creates a very humid, heavy air. He said this allows the pitcher to get extra movement on his pitches. I presume his point is that the dome plays in the Twins’ pitching / defense focus.

The camera angle behind the plate.. the turf between the bases.

by entropic soul on Jun 19, 2009 7:26 PM CDT reply actions

well

it’s mostly weird because it’s so squarish. The field itself is pretty similar to the Astrodome (and to pretty much all of the old multi-purpose domes), but the square design makes the stands look weird to me.

But the dome had the turf between the bases, too. And, yes, that looks very strange.

Anybody got a reference?

just run expectancy

http://www.tangotiger.net/RE9902.html

You’re increasing the expected runs by about .2. The likelihood of a DP really isn’t that great, so I suspect it doesn’t work out in the defense’s favor. Maybe it works with a guy like Oswalt, but I doubt it.

That's a darn handy chart

I knew outs were valuable, but that’s a really great way to see just how valuable they are.

Has anybody shown it to Coop?

by AstroAndy on Jun 19, 2009 9:18 PM CDT up reply actions

maybe

but he certainly didn’t take it to heart.

Yeah, it’s cool stuff. It’s part of why one of Bill James’ commandments is “Thou shall not intentionally walk thine opponents’ hitters.”

Roy might have gone for the K in that situation.

With 2-2 count, he clearly went for the inside pitch to try and get the ball up the middle.
