Houston Astros at Minnesota Twins, Jun 19, 2009 7:10 PM CDT
Kevin Slowey is a good young pitcher for the Twins, but I think the Astros offense holds the key for this series. Unlike against Texas, the Astros offense is not overmatched by this Twins lineup tonight. Specifically, the bottom three: Young, Gomez and Punto, are about as light hitting a trio as you'll find in any AL lineup. Now they may all hit the ball hard tonight and prove me to be a fool, but the odds are against it. If the Astros want to go home with a winning road trip, they must take at least 2/3 in Minnesota. If Houston can take advantage of the bottom of the lineup's relative weakness, and score some runs of our own, the series becomes that much more win-able.

Al over at Bleed Cubbie Blue....
said the Twins’ team was the most fundamentally sound team he can remember seeing in 10 or 15 years. Apparently, the Twins don’t beat themselves, move runners over, execute well, etc. That was an interesting observation and makes me kind of curious to see the Twins.
dome baseball...
brings back memories
The Metrodome isn’t nearly as cool, though.
Your friendly neighborhood Dreamshake mod.
steve sparks made an interesting statement about the metrodome (pre-game show)...
he said the pressure used to keep the dome inflated creates a very humid, heavy air. He said this allows the pitcher to get extra movement on his pitches. I presume his point is that the dome plays in the Twins’ pitching / defense focus.
fooled Kepp
strikes him out on a fastball high and tight. Might have been a tad off the plate, but so it goes.

Stupidly goes for it, probably safe, but still stupid.

Hey, DQ
y’all should do a Q&A with the Twins blog. I hear they’re nice in Minnesota, so they’ll probably accept.

Bourn CS
good throw from Mauer. On the replay, it looks like Michael was able to avoid the tag, but the ump couldn’t see that.
Your friendly neighborhood Dreamshake mod.
What kills me
Is that Bourn violated every rule of game theory and was about as public as possible in the fact that he was going to challenge Mauer’s arm. Why do it on the first opportunity?

Besides.. Bourn leads the league in steals, doesn't he?

my call for Mauer as AL MVP
is looking pretty good right now.
Your friendly neighborhood Dreamshake mod.
This place looks so odd.
Never seen it before.
The camera angle behind the plate.. the turf between the bases.
well
it’s mostly weird because it’s so squarish. The field itself is pretty similar to the Astrodome (and to pretty much all of the old multi-purpose domes), but the square design makes the stands look weird to me.
But the dome had the turf between the bases, too. And, yes, that looks very strange.
Your friendly neighborhood Dreamshake mod.
Don't remember much about the dome.
I was too young.

the Phillies had an embarassing play, pitching against the Blue Jays over the weekend.
pitcher walked Scutaro, and after Scutaro got to first he kept going and stole second. Utley and the shortstop weren’t paying attention and were away from the bag, and the pitcher didn’t see it.

Berkman walks again
the Astros are just so intimidating. Slowey can’t throw strikes. Except when he does, and then he strikes them out.

I recall reading an article out of Minnesota a couple of years ago in which a sports writer argued that the Twins should trade for Pence. The article had some quotes from uncles/aunts or the like who said Pence wouldn’t mind coming back to Minnesota. Apparently, Pence’s mom and dad moved from Minnesota to Texas when he was young or something like that.

just run expectancy
http://www.tangotiger.net/RE9902.html
You’re increasing the expected runs by about .2. The likelihood of a DP really isn’t that great, so I suspect it doesn’t work out in the defense’s favor. Maybe it works with a guy like Oswalt, but I doubt it.
Your friendly neighborhood Dreamshake mod.
