In case you missed it, Felipe Paulino will miss today's game due to injury.....Russ Ortiz was terrific last Sunday against the Pirates. He saved our bacon when Felipe Paulino was forced out with an injury of his own after less than two innings. Today though, Ortiz will be tested against a better lineup and mound opponent. Ortiz has a sub four ERA despite having a K:BB ratio of almost one. In the other dugout, Cubs starter Ryan Dempster has suffered due to the home run ball. The Astros already beat the Cubs in one Dempster start at the Juice Box this season, so it can be done. A fourth straight series win is on the line.

Big Game

This is a big game.

If we win this game we could potentially be out of last place, 5 games back of first place, and 4 games under .500 heading into a series with the Diamondbacks. Oswalt and Hampton would also pitch in Arizona which would give us a good chance of winning the series.

It’s too soon to be too optomistic. However, this game could be important.

How ironic would it be if this season we start our rally against Chicago?

Bottom 1st

Ortiz got the Cubs 1-2-3 in the top of the inning (GO/K/GO).

Bourn leads off with a double in the bottom. Sounded like Soriano misplayed it in left.

by littlevisigoth on Jun 11, 2009 1:14 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Tejada

follows with an infield hit on a grounder that almost snuck through the middle. Bourn advances to 3rd. No outs.

1-2-3 inning for Ortiz...followed by Astros....

putting the first two runners on base. Bourn double, followed by Tejada infield hit. Terrific play by 2d sacker to keep Astros from scoring.

Hey clack...

you watching on TV ? Wondering how Ortiz looks…he might be a solid starter the rest of the way…

yeah, I'm watching ...brought some work home with me...

so I may not get to make complete updates (forgot to mention the Astros’ quick outs in the 3d).

Ortiz looks pretty good so far. He has good movement on his pitches, and the challenge will be to keep enough balls in the zone to keep his BB down.

Sidenote

I went to the game Tuesday night (ugh, it was rough), and was noting all the lousy AVGs up and down the Cubs order. Just checking through some team stats and the Cubs are in the bottom half of the NL in just about every standard offensive category (except HR) and are 13th out of 16 in runs scored. Just looking at names, you’d think it should be a formidable lineup, but they haven’t quite proven that out so far this year.

The Astros are in the top half of the NL in most offensive categories, except one notable one. They’re 14th out of 16 in runs scored. Of course, we’ve already been through that discussion.

I hate this, when it happens.

A “Bartman” play, as JD says. An Astros fan knocks a foul ball away from Blum as he is about to catch it.

Today in History....

this is a good memory. The six pitcher no hitter by the Astros in 2003…I think that’s the year.
Lidge, Dotel, Oswalt, Wagner, and Co. in Yankee Stadium.

that was amazing...

I remember watching that game…well sort of was on in the back ground. Thought for sure we had lost once Roy went out. My son came and got me….in the 7th or so and couldn’t believe it…

With 1 out, runner on first (walk), Robinson comes to check on Ortiz.

They speculate that Ortiz looked out of sorts when he covered first base in the previous play. Now Derek Lee flies out to RF.

by clack on Jun 11, 2009 2:13 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Ortiz threw 68 pitches four days ago. This maybe his limit. The bullpen needs to be ready.

by Killer Bee on Jun 11, 2009 2:16 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Ortiz K's Hoffpauir.

Ortiz has 16.2 consecutive scoreless innings, if you count his relief work.

really good job by Ortiz in the 5th.

JD is impressed with Ortiz’s change up, which has always been one of Ortiz’s better pitches in his career. As Ortiz gets a swing and miss on his change up, JD say, you know it is a really good change up when the pitch is thigh high in the zone and the hitters still can’t get to it.

Russ Ortiz with a 1 out single....line drive off the LF wall.

Soriano plays it well off the wall, and Ortiz can’t go farther than first base.

Once Valverde returns, Sampson could be a very good SU with Hawkins. It seems like there is a possibility Hawkins could wear down over the year.

by Killer Bee on Jun 11, 2009 3:31 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

He is in his mid 30’s so yes he could, much like Brocail last year. Wtih Valverde back and the way Sampson is pitching, bullpen can get back to where it needs to be

As a former White Sox-er, he particularly likes beating the Cubs. He says people he knew on the White Sox text him when he had the walk off hit last night and tell him, “stick it to the Cubs.”

They had a pretty funny audio sequence where they clipped together the various comments that Kasper and Brenly made before last night’s intentional walk to Lance and the Blum at bat. Lots of “I dunno” and “it makes sense, but I worry more about Blum.”
