Question about former farm system playes
I know we traded most of our farm team away for players like Johnson, beltran, and tejada...but of those players...specifically pitchers...does any one know where they are now and are there any big players now that we traded away earlier out of our farm teams?
First time poster so I am sorry if this topic is already up, but if it is could you kindly point me in the right direction? Thank you!

for johnson – freddy garcia, carlos guillen, and john halama
for beltran – octavio dotel, and john buck
for tejada – luke scott, matt albers, troy patton, dennis sarfate, michael costanzo
Guillen and Scott are the most effective players currently.
Among pitchers, Octavio Dotel currently is the most effective ML pitcher. He is a relief pitcher for the ChiSox with a sub-3 ERA. (However, Dotel was not a great trade for the A’s; after the Astros traded him, he had to undergo TJ surgery.) Albers and Sarfate are relief pitchers for the O’s, but have not been very effective so far this year . Freddy Garcia was once a great pitcher, but injuries took their toll, and after a minor league stint with the Mets this year, he went home to reconsider whether he should retire. Halama was a semi-effective pitcher many years ago, but his last professional pitching was in 2008 in AAA. Troy Patton underwent TJ surgery shortly after his trade, and he is now pitching in AA as he tries to make his way back.
One of my favorite discussions with people. Does anyone know how Johan Santana ended up a Twin? I heard the Astros only looked at him as a reliever, but was he waived or traded? Also, Phil Nevin and Caminiti, they were traded to the Pads back and forth, were they not? This would really be a great thread to get active.
he was a rule-5 pick.
The Marlins drafted him and traded him to the Twins after the Astros left him unprotected.
Nevin was traded (after only a year in the majors) for the Tigers’ closer (his name escapes me right now, and I don’t really feel like looking it up), who only spent (I think) a year with Houston.

Phil Nevin tore up the clubhouse or something like that...
and cursed Bob Watson, the GM, when Watson told him he would be sent down to AAA. Watson wasn’t one to take that kind of reaction and traded him for reliever Mike Henneman. I recall that Nevin later admitted that he deserved to be traded, and regretted his immaturity. (Note that the Astros picked Nevin in the top spot in the draft over Derek Jeter, mostly because they thought Nevin was closer to playing in the majors.)
As far as Santana…the Astros felt like they had a lot of young pitchers to protect, and unfortunately they picked the wrong one to protect. I’ve forgotten who they protected over Santana…but nothing ever came of him.
yeah, it's the same thing that happened to Bobby Abreu.
The Astros had a lot of really good outfielders, and Abreu had a bit of an injury history, so the Astros bet on Hidalgo instead. I think Abreu and Santana are good examples of some of the bad luck the Astros have had in making those types of bets. Though it’s not like Hidalgo was a bad bet.
