McLane Says It's "Premature" to Discuss Cooper Job Status
Drayton McLane asks for fans to be patient with Cecil Cooper and the Astros team. "He's only been the manager for a year and a half," McLane said. "I think that's somewhat premature (to discuss firing Cooper)."
Ed Wade said,"I've been a GM now for 10 years. This is my 10th year," Wade said. "I don't get into votes of confidence. I don't think there's any value to it." He added:
"We all have to take responsibility for where we are," he said. "I don't think anybody can step out of the glare at this time. We have to recognize that we're all accountable and responsible. I take full accountability for this. I'm responsible."
In a separate blog entry, the Chronicle's Jose Ortiz included this anonymous quote from an Astros' player:
"It's going to be Coop or me soon. Just watch."

Bleh
Ortiz seems to be taking over Justice’s slot as chief pot-stirrer, although at least he doesn’t seem to flip-flop as much.
That said, ultimatums are virulently and insidiously destructive. I’m not a Coop fan at this point by any means, but I almost hope they get rid of the player instead. Often the best way to cure a cancer is excision.
Of course, it would suck if it were Roy.

if I were guessing, my guess would be Roy Oswalt...particularly after Cooper's comments
about Roy in the press earlier this week.

Unfortunately, I suspect you are correct
Just reading that line sounds exactly like Roy’s phraseology. And given that Roy has been transparent about his willingness to go to a winning team, perhaps he’s more than willing now. I hate to think of his essentially pulling a Manny. Whoever it is, it’s very disappointing (to me).

Ortiz also indicates that a White Sox scout watched the Astros in the Reds series...
and is following the Astros to their next series. Ortiz speculates that the White Sox want to make a play for Oswalt, now that they missed out on Peavy. Ortiz also points out that Roy, like Peavy, could keep that from happening.

The Astros need to...
try and get the Peavy deal for Wandy…

Astros' players aren't the only ones talking about their manager's job status.
This article says that several Rockies’ players expect Clint Hurdle to be fired today.
