Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Let's get Kurt Russell to throw out the first pitch next game...

Because when you think Kurt Russell, you have to think Tombstone!  Since attendance is already down this season, Uncle Drayton can't blame wanting to keep butts in seats as the reason for not giving our youngsters more playing time.  After the All-Star break, we need to start focusing on next season:

-- Trade Miggie, Lee, and/or Pudge for whatever you can get.  Lee and Tejada would be dangerous DH players in the AL for a team looking to make the next step and Pudge would be a good veteran backstop player for either league.  Trade them and get what you can for them because they only have a couple of years left anyway.

-- Bring up Chris Johnson to start playing 3B consistently as he can't be any worse than Blum.  Get him some quality playing time for next season.

-- The Four Horsemen - No matter what anyone tells you, you have to keep Pence, Berkman, Oswalt, and Wandy.  Roy is a below market priced ace, Wandy is your best #2 or #3 pitcher option on a shallow pitching staff, & Pence/Berkman give you a core IF and OF player to build around.  Anyone else on the MLB squad is fair game.

-- Houston has never had a clearance sale, but then again, we have never gotten less out of more before.  Times have certainly changed.

-- Fire Cooper - Nice guy, but right now heads need to roll if you want to get any ounce of motivation squeezed out of the players right now.  They need to know that the next few months will be a period of new faces coming thru the clubhouse.  If you want to be able to see them, start playing better!

I love the Astros, but I don't want to go thru another couple of seasons of below average records because Uncle Drayton wants to put butts in seats vs. wins in the record column!

Kurt Russell might not work

First movie I think of is Escape from New York, after that this great movie,

and I confess, two movies he made are sort of Saturday afternoon type movies that I think are pretty funny, Overboard and Captain Ron.

But seriously, after the 4, there is Valverde and what else? Nobody will take Carlos.

Tejada – on the last year of his contract, so you’re not going to get much anyways. And there’s a pretty good chance that his production down the stretch is nowhere close to what it is now.
Pudge – on the last year of his contract. At this point, he’d be a few months of average catching.
Lee – untradeable. He’s got that clause he has said he won’t waive, and his bloated salary would make a good trade unlikely, anyways.

- Bring up Chris Johnson to start playing 3B consistently as he can’t be any worse than Blum. Get him some quality playing time for next season.

Actually, he could do much worse than Blum. And if the organization doesn’t think he’s ready to contribute at the major-league level, then he probably isn’t.

— The Four Horsemen – No matter what anyone tells you, you have to keep Pence, Berkman, Oswalt, and Wandy. Really? These are the Astros’ only real trading assets. Pence is still in club-controlled years, so he’s VERY valuable. Oswalt’s having problems now, but he’ll probably rebound. Same goes for Lance. Wandy is in a weird situation: he’s having a great season, but this is his last arbitration year. But, really, if you want to rebuild the team, these are the guys you have to trade. And Valverde.

— Houston has never had a clearance sale, but then again, we have never gotten less out of more before. Times have certainly changed.

And you’re not advocating that. You want the Astros to dump their older, less consistent players (and Lee’s horrible contract) but keep their only trading pieces. (As an aside, we HAVE had fire sales, but it was a long time ago).
— Fire Cooper – Nice guy, but right now heads need to roll if you want to get any ounce of motivation squeezed out of the players right now. They need to know that the next few months will be a period of new faces coming thru the clubhouse. If you want to be able to see them, start playing better!

Honestly, he’s really not killing the club. He’s not helping, but he’s not destroying Paulino’s arm or anything. I don’t really have a problem with him, so long as the Astros aren’t in a pennant race.

Hey Lad is that right about Wandy?

I looked at Cot’s, but I’m not sure about how to read it:

1 year/$2.6M (2009)
re-signed by Houston 1/26/09 (avoided arbitration, $3M-$2.25M)
1 year/$0.451M (2008)
re-signed by Houston 2/28/08
1 year/$0.406M (2007), re-signed 2/07
1 year/$0.327M (2006), renewed 3/06
1 year/$0.316M (2005), re-signed 3/05 (split contract)
ML service: 3.105

Wandy is not in his last arbitration year.

I think he has two more years of arbitraiton left.

by clack on May 27, 2009 7:58 PM CDT up reply actions

really?

This is his sixth full season, right? There’s a good chance I’m getting this wrong, but I was under the impression that the basic formula was six years in the majors, then you’re automatically a free agent.

players get 3 years of arbitration.

I am mistaken when I said he has 2 years left. As indicated in ol Pete’s post, he has only had 2 arbitration eligible years. I think he has 5 years of service time. Arbitration-eligibility starts after 3 years. 2005 thru 2007 = 3 years. first arb eligible year is 2008. second arb eligible year is 2009. third arb eligible year (and 6th year of service time) is 2010.

okay

so he’s actually a lot more valuable. If there is any guy on the team with more than one year on his contract who should probably be traded at the deadline, it’s Wandy.

I think I disagree with that.

Not that this discussion makes much difference. I want the team to stay reasonably competitive for the next few years. I think you can replace some of the older players and still do that. But pitching is in such short supply, I would not trade Wandy.

I think all the Chris Johnson for 3B people

need to come back to earth. He’s had one good 3/4 of a season in AA, but other than that, he hasn’t distinguished himself as a rising star of a prospect. Here are his combined AAA numbers from last year and this year:

146 AB, .233 AVG, .295 SLG, .258 OBP, 1 HR, 5 BB, 37 K

Does that smack of a guy that should be starting at 3B for Houston RIGHT NOW?

Beggars can't be choosers...

The Astros are in no position to be picky. Again, other than Pence, Berkman, Oswalt, and Wandy, you trade what you can and get what you can.

-Tejada could be an everyday player or a DH in a flash. Believe me, the AL race is going to be very tight this year and I think Tejada could be a bat a team looking to make a move would make.
-As far as Lee, his contract stinks. I think you still trade him and pay some of the salary to offset the burden he would become financially to another team for the quality ABs he would provide
-Concerning Pudge, I’d say keep him for another year until Castro is ready, but again, no reasonable offer denied!
-With Valverde, I’d trade him in a heartbeat, but his injury will cause people to not offer near as much as him healthy next season.

And as for those saying let’s keep the team competitive, exactly what games have you been watching? Yeah, we caught fire after the All-Star break last year only to finish third in the Central. What did that get us? Nothing. Not to take a page out of Ricky Bobby’s self-help book, but “If you ain’t first, you’re last!”. I would be willing to bet whatever that the team as-is would finish no better than 3rd in the Central for the next three years. Attendance is down already so make the moves while it won’t hurt as much. Bring up all the young guys who are still young enough to recover from major league jitters and let’s see what they can do.

I don't agree with you.

And I guess we’re different kind of fans. If I followed the line "If you ain’t first, you’re last!", then I suppose I would have given up as an Astros fan over the last 30 or so years of fandom. Do I want to see a competitive team? Yes. Am I glad that the Astros came back last year and made a run for contention? Yes. That made the games enjoyable to me as a fan. Do I think smart moves can keep this team reasonably competitive over the next few years while the farm system is rebuilt? Yes, I do.

where to start

Tejada might bring back an slighlty up average bull pen arm eeh
Lee(no trade clause) doesn’t want to leave his ranch. i’d consider moving him when the no trade is up but for a quality return only and if you have no shot at that point
Pudge- a reasonable offer isn’t going to get you much

so far nothing is accomplished

i’m a baseball fan. i happen to be an astros fan. if i was born in st luis i’d have been a cardinals fan. winning is a lot more fun than losing but i rather watch a competitve team/a team over .500 than pitsburgh.

baseball is a great sport. winning is a lot of fun. obviously winning a championship is a lot more fun. yet not winning a championship doesn’t take away from winning in general.
