A nice pitching matchup, to be sure. Jurrjens is a solid K guy, but struggles with control. Let's see if our young guns, Pence and Bourn, can continue their high walking ways against the young Aruban.

Roy Oswalt looks to build on a strong start against the Commie-Reds.

Just as Bourn hits a grounder

our local affiliate goes to a special weather alert that expalins which counties are in a tornado warning, naming towns i never heard of – Baxar?. Guin? Brilliant? red Bay?— live lightning counts (52)- they are staying on until the tornado warning in a county 3 or 4 counties from here is no longer a threat.

I guess I’ll pull up the KTRH radio broadcast.

Karros isn't half bad

Buck is the master of stating the obvious

by HighLeveragePerformer on May 2, 2009 2:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hated Karros last week when the Cubs played.

He kept repeating over and over that you can’t expect Soriano to hit HRs when he is in the middle of the lineup, because he only hits HRs when he leads off. Karros just stated it as a matter of fact that Soriano’s HR capability depends on leading off. I don’t mind him taking that position….if he would at least give a plausible reason why that would be true. Just to state it as a fact, which Lou Piniella and fans should just acknowledge, was ridiculous.

They gave that stat last night - Oswalt has never beaten the Braves in the reg. season

and they repeat it here with the caveat – he hasn’t faced them since 2005. Weird, though we don’t play the Braves very much (because the MLB scheduler don’t give a shit about fostering any sort of rivalries)

BBTF linked to a blog which had 25 Ricky Henderson stories.

I think this one is my favorite:

In the early 1980s, the Oakland A’s accounting department was freaking out. The books were off $1 million. After an investigation, it was determined Rickey was the reason why. The GM asked him about a $1 million bonus he had received and Rickey said instead of cashing it, he framed it and hung it on a wall at his house.

by AstroAndy on May 2, 2009 4:57 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Radio guys say

1. This would be his normal wotrkout day between starts

2. He should pitch no more than 3 innings

3. It’s good he’s a reliever since he did not pitch last year after surgery so pitching too many innings this year could harm his arm.

My wife, who is away and visiting her parents, just emailed me the following:

Subject: This is how stupid your team is…

Carlos Lee has a brother named Carlos and has named his two sons Carlos and Karlos?

WHY?
-—-
I know it sounds bad, but the fact that she emailed that to me means that she’s either watching the game or is Wikipediaing information about the Astros…and given that I’ve been trying to convert her to a baseball fan, this email sounds like progress.

It's amazing how our local Fox affiliate

can broadcast a Weather Alert for most of the past 4 hours when we don’t even have rain or wind in the county. I looked up to see them talking about bad weather in Mississippi that is ’only" 86 miles from the Alabama state line.

Folks in Kingville, Alabama, are seeing golf ball size hail now.

Late thoughts on Paulino as reliever

In the thread yesteeday on Paulino as reliever clack wrote:

"Third, I may be wrong about this, but I don’t see Paulino as closer material. He doesn’t seem to get a lot of K’s on his fastball. He will get Ks when he has a good change and curveball and mixes them with the fastball. He has been shaky for the first couple of batters in each 1st inning so far. "

Clack’s observation bore out today as Paulino allowed two hits on his first two pitches. (but he did strike out the side too) (and a walk and wild pitch)
