Seems shocking for Berkman to miss a game in Cincinnati, huh?

Someone on the board (BWhite, I think) suggested that Berkman needs a break. I guess Cooper agrees.

J.R. Towles finally gets a start. Given that Pudge seemed to break out offensively yesterday in Cincy, I almost would prefer that he continue playing. But J.R. may be a good choice to catch Paulino. I assume J.R. caught Felipe in his earlier Round Rock starts. And it’s time for Towles to get some more at bats.

Lance needed a break - mentally if nothng else

But it is weird that it comes in Cincinnati. Carlos Lee and Hunter Pence should pick up the slack at the plate nicely though. Astros will need Lance in Atlanta.

Hairston moved to second. Recent callup Rosales at third. Nix in left (that head to head collision with Tejada must have sidelined Chris Dickerson).

Nix makes me nervous (and Bruce).

Maybe a three game win streak (11 game win streak in Cincy) has made me too cocky, but I think the Astros field the better team tonight.

Lee out on line drive to Nix in LF.

He hit the ball hard, and it looked like a hit off the bat. It was right at Nix, who still had trouble holding on to the ball because it was hit so hard.

by clack on Apr 29, 2009 6:18 PM CDT up reply actions

It almost look like

Lee’s ball picked Nix of the ground

Willy T did not move to second

A little stutter step is all. The ball was hit so hard at Matsui and n he threw so quickly to Erstad,. Willy T’s lead-off was enough was far enough off first that he could not get back to first in time.

Walked Willie Taveras

not a good idea – but it seems like there is a tight strike zone tonight

Volquez appears to have very good stuff tonight.

FB is in the 97 range, and he is getting it close enough to the strike zone to get swings and misses.

Michael Bourn running all over center

Run forward on first out . Back to the wall for second out

what's funny

is that, even after it was made very clear that Towles was not running, and had nothing more than a one-step lead, Volquez kept throwing to the bag.

by Only_A_Lad on Apr 29, 2009 6:51 PM CDT up reply actions

nothing special by Paulino so far.

He has gotten some flyballs, and a DP ball hit very hard.

by clack on Apr 29, 2009 6:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Wow, nice running catch by Bourn.

I thought that was extra bases for sure.

by clack on Apr 29, 2009 6:53 PM CDT reply actions

Paulino gets out of it on a curveball hit to shortstop.

Some of Paulino’s breaking pitcihes don’t look that crisp. Willy T’s opposite field hit came on a semi-hainging curve, I think.

Weird Stat

Third straight year Astros have started 9-12

I hope it won't haunt them

as with the past few years finishing 1 or few games behind playoff spot

Michale Bourn six catches in four innings

Two easy catches and four that easily could have been hits with less fleet fielders out there

JD is right that Astros' hitter are helping Volquez too much...

too impatient. Towles had ball 4 and swung amd missed anyway.

Adam Rosales - just called up after batting .400 plus in AAA

His first at bat was caught by Bourn at left center wall. He reminds me some of Hunter Pence.

strikeout

what worries me about Paulino – and this worried me in his last start, too – is that he’s just not missing bats the way he was in his first start.

by Only_A_Lad on Apr 29, 2009 7:37 PM CDT reply actions

dammit...Lee knocks ball out of Bourn's hands...

and then Lee and Bourn argue while runner goes to second.

I'm still in commercial break on MLB.TV after Astros weak at bat

I don’t think I’m going to like what I see when video resumes.

error was charged to Bourn...

JD said a real baseball person might be more inclined to charge it to Lee….

A K by Paulino for 1st out.

Paulino’s swinging strikes usually come on breaking pitches.

by clack on Apr 29, 2009 7:47 PM CDT reply actions

grounder to Erstad...runner on 3d now with 2 outs.

Nix is coming up. He seems pretty hot againt the Astros.

Didn’t Nix used to play for the Cubs when Dusty was there?

tough luck

at least miggy didn’t try to throw nix out

by Only_A_Lad on Apr 29, 2009 7:53 PM CDT reply actions

Paulino walks the next batter.

I think giving up the run on the bad luck is getting in his head.

I don’t like players who run on walks

Nix

As i wrote before the game started, Nix makes me nervous. He seems to be one of those players who is a thorn in the Astros side. Tonight a triple and scored a run; and now the RBI.

He'd make me less nervous if

I could count on our guys mustering more than 1 hit in 6 innings…

Yeah, that too

I wonder if Berkman and Pudge Rodriguez are biting at the bit to get in the game

none there.

15 straight retired by Volquez. At least the Astros got a double from Tejada in the 1st inning. or else we would be worrying about a no hitter.

Just got in from the airport

On the way home I heard the score 3 times. Guess who WASN’T broadcasting….

Volquez must be pitching a beauty.

Astros looking very disorganized in the field now

and earlier, too. Get it all out of your system tonight, boys.

Brocail dusts Gonzales

Cincy gets only 1 run after loading the bases

not bad, but it’s still 0-3 as we go to the top of the ninth and face their closer.

Astros Lose 3-0

Bourn’s fielding was the highlight (forget the error)
Pauino had a good outing – one earned run
That’s about it

We always manage to come up with a poor production like this

and kill our small momentum. First, the 3rd Dodgers game and now this.
