A very nice early season pitching matchup tonight.

The Reds are sitting the struggling Edwin Encarnacion, in favor of Jerry Hariston, Jr.

Three straight wins would be our longest winning streak of the season.

Edwin Encarcion went on DL today I think

which is a shame since he helped the Astros a lot yesterday.

Was it really 20 hours since Astros scored 3 runs in the ninth? It seems like just yesterday.

Crowd booing Reds as Astros take 1-0 lead.

Bourn with a bouncer between 1st and 2d, and Votto drops it, then tries too hard to throw out a speedy Bourn, and the ball goes past 1st base.

Comedy of Errors as Matsui Scored

Grounder to first who muffs the catch , then throws who knows where on a throw to first well late. the ball rolls around as Matsui scurries home from second

Wandy has thrown several pitches in the dirt.

One appeared to be a curve, the other an overthrown fastball.

Wandy's road ERA in 2008

was actually better than the home+road ERA of a lot of pitchers, including Andy Pettitte, Paul Byrd, and Bronson Arroyo

He likes to drag bunt

Misses a lot of them for strikes and hurts his count; when he makes contact can’t seem to control location.

He needs to learn to square up if he’s going to bunt.

I saw this quote from Cooper about Pence's 9th inning at bat yesterday.

I have to say I am incredulous that Cooper told Pence that he never wants to see him go the other way with the ball.

Cordero (0-1), who entered the game with a 1.29 ERA and six saves, struggled, allowing Carlos Lee and Miguel Tejada to hit back-to-back singles. Pence came to the plate and fell into an 0-2 hole, and Astros manager Cecil Cooper could swear he thought Pence was trying to hit the ball the opposite way to right field. It’s not what Cooper wanted to see.

“To me, Hunter is an RBI guy,” Cooper said. “That’s why he hits down in the order. I told him in that second pitch I thought he might have been trying to go the other way a little bit. I told him I didn’t want him to ever do that. He’s an RBI guy, and we need him to drive in runs for us to be successful.”

Pence said he wasn’t necessarily looking to go the other way, but after falling behind in the count to Cordero, he simply focused on protecting the plate.

“That’s all you can do off of him at that point is just try to stay inside a fastball and keep your hands back in case of a slider,” Pence said. “Cordero challenged me. Sometimes they hit you, and sometimes you hit them. Fortunately, I was able to find a hole.”

From the Reds website:

Lincoln’s performance for the Reds last season didn’t just revive a dormant Major League career, it proved quite lucrative, too. The 33-year-old will make an annual base salary of $1.5 million in 2009 and $2.5 million in ’10. The contract also includes incentive bonuses of up to $250,000 bases on games pitched and a possible $450,000 based on games finished.

The signing capped a long comeback effort for Lincoln, who returned to the Major Leagues in 2008 after he missed nearly four years recovering from two different ulnar collateral ligament surgeries on his right elbow.
