Desperately Seeking a win.

We hand the ball to our stopper....yea...stopper.

Luckily, Parra has struggled himself this season.

This line up confuses the hell out of me.

Well,

our lineup is weird, but the Brewers’ is also weird. Crag Counsel @ #2? WTF?

by Only_A_Lad on Apr 26, 2009 1:10 PM CDT reply actions

What confuses you ?

I expected Tejada tr take the day off so seeing Keepinger playing second with Matsui not starting was surprisng when I expected Keppinger to play instead of Tejada.

Blum battin 8th shocked me at first , but where else would you put him. This could be a potent lineup.

Bourn bats first. After last night’s exhibition, why not . He seems to have his stroke going good now. Kessinger is a solid second slot batter now.

Berkman is in a slump and probabaly should not be batting third , but it’d be a bigger surprise to see him batting somewhere else in the lineup.

Lee I assume is healthy enough to play.

Evreyone else in good spot

yeah

just work the count, try to slap the ball into the outfield. Bunting hardly ever works.

It's cool Carlos

I don't like Mike Cameron

the more I see that replay from Friday, the more I think he went for Q’s head.

by Only_A_Lad on Apr 26, 2009 1:28 PM CDT reply actions

I think his breaking up of the DP last night...

was more “outside the rules” than the play at the plate. He went too far away from the basepath to try to take out Matsui. However, that is seldom called.

by clack on Apr 26, 2009 1:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Wasn’t Matsui behind the bag?

by ol Pete on Apr 26, 2009 1:44 PM CDT up reply actions

behind but toward the CF side of the bag is what I saw.

the only reason I mentioned it is that a couple of other blogs thought the same thing.

by clack on Apr 26, 2009 1:46 PM CDT up reply actions

here is the account at spikesnstars web site

(from a writer who thought the crowd wrongly booed Cameron on the play at the plate)

He has to backhand the flip to Matsui and Cameron barrels into him, aiming for the knees and sliding past the bag. Fans, this is where you should have booed.

Normally, I wouldn’t say much about it, because the umps have to see a really obvious interference to call it….and sometimes then they don’t call it.

by clack on Apr 26, 2009 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions

I dunno. It sounds like he did what he should do, at least to me.

JD suggests Kendall has a chance to break Biggio's record

doubtful. Kendall probably has maybe 2 years as a starter left in him, and he’s about 50 HBP behind Bidge. It would take a truly prolific failure to get out of the way to catch up to Biggio.

by Only_A_Lad on Apr 26, 2009 1:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Why did Berkman catch that?

Hunter Pence had the movement to home with a man on third.

Luckily Cameron stayed at third anyway

by Joe in Birmingham on Apr 26, 2009 1:35 PM CDT reply actions

he may have wondered if Pence would get there.

I wondered, myself, as I watched the play. As we might have said on one of Pence’s SBs the other day, there is something about his running style which makes you think he won’t make it…even though he does.

Just as I type that, Pence is thrown out at 2d.

Doesn't seem like astros' pitchers have had the inside pitch available...

to them in a long time. Recently umps have been tough on the inside zone.

by clack on Apr 26, 2009 2:45 PM CDT reply actions

Am watching the pitch tracker on Gameday Live

So far, have not seen a call that was “wrong” – that is, every strike is charted as in the zone, and every ball outside. Does this system ever show any pitches that disagree with the umpire’s call?

It takes more than pitching to win a pennant, but not much!

In gameday, click on the 1 for 1st inning below the pitch tracker, then scroll up to Counsell. Click the plus sign to expand it and then click Counsell’s name.

by ol Pete on Apr 26, 2009 2:51 PM CDT up reply actions

I did that and every pitch

seems to agree. I may be reading this thing wrong, as I am assuming the circle is where the ball crossed the “fuzzy” strike zone. ???

by bwhite2323 on Apr 26, 2009 2:55 PM CDT up reply actions

There is a green dot which is a called ball

that is right in the middle of the square, the strike zone.

by ol Pete on Apr 26, 2009 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes!

I missed it as it is nearly totally hidden by pitch #4 – thanks!

I assume the zone must have been nearly irrelevant during last night’s game.

that's a conversation that could go on for a long time

but for anyone interested, MLB has most of last night’s ejections as a video highlight. I’d love to know what the ump said that made Pudge whip his head around.

by ol Pete on Apr 26, 2009 3:00 PM CDT up reply actions

We thoguht it might be

the ump’s refusal to grant an appeal to first on a swing/no swing call. We thought it was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

It takes more than pitching to win a pennant, but not much!

by bwhite2323 on Apr 26, 2009 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I remember that too.

Cooper said the issue came to a head when Pudge held the ball in place momentarily and asked the ump about the location of he ball. The ump replied that he was making hm look bad or some such…must have been a little more, because you can tell was jawing with Pudge.

by clack on Apr 26, 2009 3:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I thought Pudge was going to hit the ump

LaTroy Hawkins couldn’t pull him away from the ump.

by bwhite2323 on Apr 26, 2009 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions

I got worried toward the end when one of the umpires...

moved toward Pudge, like he wanted to provoke something…and Pudge got loose from Hawkins. Fortunately, I think the umpire just wanted to hear what he had to say, and Pudge tried to calm down but still told him something pretty forcefully.

by clack on Apr 26, 2009 3:17 PM CDT up reply actions

all I know is that the umpire didn't like Pudge holding the pitch...

too long…told him he was showing him up. Obviously Pudge had enough.

I assume its just their way of making things vague.

by ol Pete on Apr 26, 2009 2:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Not sure of the depth of the zone.

If this thing can be made accurate, it could be used to call strikes and balls through a headset to the ump or on the scoreboard.

What I meant was

Even though every game will be a struggle, Astros starting pitching matches up well against the Reds starter so that each has a great chance to keep the Astros in the game fora win IF the offense scores more than 2 runs and the relief corps doesn’t blow it- 3 games like that and the Astros easily win three games. Astros pitchers are Oswalt, Wandy and Paulino
