future of the astros
Lets face it everybody the astros are an already bad team going downhill. They are 1-6 to start the year and they were recently rated by Baseball America to have the worst farm system in baseball. With a few valuable pieces left on the major league team I have a few trades that could not only net some great prospects but also players who can help out the team in the near future.
To the Los Angeles Angels: 1B Lance Berkman
To the Houston Astros: P Jordan Walden
P Trevor Reckling
1B Mark Trumbo
To the Philadelphia Phillies: P Roy Oswalt
To the Houston Astros: P Carlos Carrasco
SS Jason Donald
OF Michael Taylor
This could give the Astros a possible 2011 lineup looking like:
C Jason Castro
1B Mark Trumbo
2B Drew Sutton
SS Jason Donald
3B Chris Johnson
RF Michael Taylor
CF Hunter Pence
LF Carlos Lee
SP Carlos Carrasco
SP Jordan Walden
SP Ross Seaton
SP Trevor Reckling
SP Jordan Lyles
CP Bud Norris/ Jose Valverde
What do you think? Any different trades you would make because something needs to happen or the Astros could sit in the cellar for a long time.

while it seems like a good idea..
drayton mclane would love to keep those two as astros for their entire careers…trading tejada or valverde is much more likely

1. Oswalt, Berkman, and Lee all have no-trade clauses, and they’ve all three basically indicated that it would take some kind of extra-ordinary circumstances to waive them. Also, other teams would know this and would use it as leverage to reduce whatever package we got in return.
2. What HLP said.
3. Having a record of 1-6 is not a rational reason to have a fire-sale.
4. Although many people feel that you have to suck while you rebuild, I think it’s perfectly acceptable for the Astros to try to be better than that while they rebuild the old-fashioned way…good scouting and drafting.
5. Did you see what Wade got for Lidge? What he gave up for Tejada? I’m not inclined to let him sit at the high stakes table until he shows he can win some smaller pots.

I agree with your basic points, Andy...
but I wouldn’t go so far as to say that all three have indicated that any circumstances exist in which they would approve a trade. Oswalt is the only one who previously said he would consider a trade if the Astros didn’t want him. Lee said last year that he will not waive his no trade clause. Berkman has said the same thing.
HLP's point
i would agree with your point if i thought that Wade and the Astros could actually succeed in drafting quality players. They haven’t drafted anybody who has produced at the major league level other than Hunter Pence for years
Pittsburgh Pirates Rebuilding Since 1992
well
Wade has only had one draft as part of the Astros so far….
In any case, I’m not as familiar with these things, but is it really standard practice to trade three of your top 10 prospects for $15 million/year stars?
good trades...
…but the season isnt over yet and i think well have a good draft this year…if we let tejada and valverde go after this year well get some good conditional picks…i think well b fine…im not worried about this franchise at all

There is no way
That we get any picks for letting Tejada go. Wade would have to be clinically insane to offer him arbitration. If he has a good year, we will trade him at the deadline, for maybe one prospect. If he doesn’t, we keep him to the end of the year, and let him walk. If we offer arbitration, which is necessary for supplemental picks, he will accept in a heartbeat, as he would get 3-4 times as much money in arbitration.
