Just tuned in

Sounds like the new Pirates pitcher walked the bases loaded. Now a 3-1 count on Newhan

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Terrible.

Man on 1st, Grounder goes under Newhan’s glove, Bourn gets it. Beats the runner to third with his throw. (where Chris Johnson is playing) – ball bounces into the stands and runners are awarded two bases.

2 batters later, Pirates hit a homerun.

6-4 Pirates.

De La Varra getting knocked around.

There was a little bad luck involved, but still.

De LaVara, the rule 5 pick, had pitched well before this game.

I should mention that Palmisano’s double was the first hit by an Astros’ catcher in a while. The last I looked, Brad Ausmus had more hits this spring with the Dodgers than all of the Astros’ catchers combined.

outfielders

Bourn calls off Yordany Ramirez, who reaches above Bourn to make the catch anyway. Bourn not happy about that.

11-4 final

not good.

Isn’t this the second time the lowly Pirates have pounded the Astros this spring?

So

what’s the over/under on the date for “all hope lost by Astros fans?” End of April?

by Only_A_Lad on Mar 8, 2009 3:22 PM CDT reply actions

I'll go with

April 12th.

not a good game...

but only one of the pitchers for the Astros in this game stands a reasonable chance of making the big league roster (Backe) and he pitched 2 scoreless innings before his muscle strain. Bourn, Pence, and Boone are the only position players in this game who will start for the Astros. Most of the position players in this game for the Astros are guys who are trying to complete for a bench slot (like Newhan and Sutton) or will most likely form “depth” at Round Rock (like Chris Johnson).

I think most of these bad spring results are more indicative of bad depth in the Astros’ system rather than regular season performance. The number of errors in these games is concerning. The errors by Sutton and Chris Johnson in spring games are going to irritate Cooper and hurt their chances of making the team.

True, but none of those guys are exactly tearing it up. And none of the catchers are hitting well at all.

well all three of those guys at least got hits in the game...

and Palmisano doubled out of the catcher slot….so you can’t really blame the starters for the loss. (OK, maybe Bourn’s error was a factor in the loss…I’m not sure.)
