Important Press Conference?

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Club owner Drayton McLane is on his way to Kissimmee, Fla., where the Astros will hold "an important press conference," according to a press release, on Wednesday at 9:45 a.m. ET at Osceola County Stadium.

The Astros did not indicate what the news conference is about, except to confirm it has nothing to do with the pending signing of Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez.

That's from the Astros official website by the way. It doesn't say anything else. Posted by Alyson Footer.

Anyway..

Any idea what this could be all about? Important Press conference? Maybe he wants to tell everyone we can still be champions even though we have not won in 17 straight games.

It has been confirmed: Cecil Cooper will be fired; Miguel Tejada to be named acting player-manager on opening day.

maybe next season..

Jeff Bagwell to come out of retirement...will play third base.

or maybe the Astros have signed Barry Bonds for the league minimum. :) (don’t tell me that wouldn’t boost attendance.) And maybe it accompanied by a Cooper resignation…since he said last year that he would quit if the Astros signed Bonds.

wow...you're right.
The Astros are on the verge of signing a potential Hall of Famer as a free agent for the second team in a week as baseball sources indicated Tuesday night that they are close to an agreement with right-hander Pedro Martinez.

Martinez pitched for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic earlier this month and worked three scoreless innings in relief against The Netherlands. He drew limited interest on the free-agent market, though, after going 5-6 with a 5.60 ERA in 20 starts with the Mets last season.

Martinez, 37, has a 214-99 lifetime record in 17 seasons.

what I don't get

about ESPN Deportes is this: whenever they do ESPN Deportes segments on regular ESPN, it’s just soccer highlights anchored by a chick with a latin accent. What the hell is that about?

by Only_A_Lad on Mar 17, 2009 8:32 PM CDT up reply actions

It's Pedro

that would make too much sense. It’s probably Ponson like I predicted last night.

by Only_A_Lad on Mar 17, 2009 8:35 PM CDT reply actions

"he" being Ponson not Pedro

Still no clues out there on the announcement tomorrow. It’s interesting that the announcement is at 9:45.

if it's true

(and despite BBPro, I’m not betting on it)

wonder how it would affect the 5th starter spot. It’d be a mistake to bet that Pedro can be a fifth starter all year long. Given Footer’s speculation on her blog today about Ortiz over Capellan (which I think makes sense), would we jettison Ortiz over Pedro and count on Capellan to fill in as the fifth starter when the inevitable injuries occur?

Could Moehler be in jeopardy in the rotation? Maybe we go with a 6 man rotation?

That’s part of the reason it seems strange that we’d go for Pedro. Another Drayton move.

by lnewcomer on Mar 17, 2009 9:08 PM CDT reply actions

if Pedro is signed

then I’d say the rotation is:

1) Oswalt
2) Wandy
3) Pedro
4) Hampton
5) Ortiz

Capellan would probably go to the bullpen and swing into the rotation whenever Hampton/Pedro gets injured or Ortiz proves ineffective, Backe would get cut to save money.

Personally, I’m not going to bitch about this being a “Drayton move,” even if it is one. It doesn’t cost any draft picks and it probably won’t cost too much.

by Only_A_Lad on Mar 17, 2009 9:24 PM CDT up reply actions

dammit

forgot about him.

Moehler was signed as a bullpen guy, so that might be where he ends up. Maybe that means Ed Wade tries to move some of the current relievers.

by Only_A_Lad on Mar 17, 2009 9:30 PM CDT up reply actions

I doubt that.

They resigned him to be a starter and he’s had a good spring. I don’t see how they just hand his spot to Pedro.

I’m looking at:
Oswalt
Wandy
Hampton
Moehler
Pedro

That’s assuming Pedro even makes it. If he signed, maybe he just competes for a job too, but I really think Ortiz is out on this one.

USA strands a man at 2nd in the 8th

still trail 4-3 going to the 9th.

any idea what NA/VA mean after the inning #. So far NA is in the top of the inning and VA is the bottom.

and yet

she said the same thing about Pudge

by Only_A_Lad on Mar 17, 2009 9:56 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah, she's going to get that thrown back at her for a while.

ti doesn’t seem like there was much she could do, but then again reporters are paid to be skeptical.

JJO is with her this time too and he’s directly quoting drayton.

all that plus the whole issue w/ the starting rotation really make me doubt this rumor

by lnewcomer on Mar 17, 2009 10:00 PM CDT up reply actions

did you see some of the comments on her blog?

someone took her to task for getting the Pudge deal wrong…and then refers to Footer’s “meltdown” on 1560….what the heck is that all about?

by clack on Mar 17, 2009 10:09 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know

I just saw that too, the comments weren’t there earlier when I read it. I wonder if there’s a podcast of the 1560 show. I never listen to that station.

Jose de Jesus Ortiz (who is often wrong)

says McLane will NOT be at the announcement (even though blog title says McLane will be there)
It will NOT concern Pedro Martinez
Nobody will be fired or hired
Team not sold
Nothing about steroids
Bud Selig not mad at the team (Huh?)

So writeth JJO

Since McLane will not be there, I guess he is not retiring either

I think this was asked somewhere else today

which is better from astros POV – USA lose and Roy & Hawkins come back, PR loses and Pudge is official, or does it matter.

I don’t think it matters

pudge

coming back to the astros is more important. he has more work to do

roy and hawkins can get there work ing with team usa. pudge needs to learn the astros pitchers

she gets kinda pissed at about 16 minutes in

mostly about Scott Boras and other reporters talking about the Astros and Pudge. I wouldn’t really call it a “meltdown,” though.

by Only_A_Lad on Mar 17, 2009 10:56 PM CDT up reply actions

the pudge conversation starts 12 minutes over at about 19 minutes

paraphrasing:
they have a problem with steroids
too much money
all excited about what boras says but they never ask the other side (astros)
hyeman is wrong
someone else is wrong
get played by boras, (carlos beltran screwed them)

the radio guys agree with no pudge

she admits in mid-january they did talk pudge

shes says people wont come see pudge. wrong i will. maybe not tons of people put some will.

agrevated but ill agree not a meltdown

Quintero

looks like he is having another tantrum:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/baseball/mlb/03/17/astros.pudge.ap/index.html?eref=si_mlb

On adding Pudge

“I don’t have any feelings about it,” said Quintero, who had been the projected starter. “I’m going to keep working hard. I can’t do anything about it. I’m happy for him to be here and help the team.” -Quintero

I don’t have feelings about it……..I can’t do anything about it

waaaaa!

hahahaha give it a rest even if your sent to the minors your going to play baseball for 400k/yr fuck it

by entropic soul on Mar 18, 2009 12:45 AM CDT reply actions

Nothing yet?

It didn’t get picked up by 610 or 790 in Houston. If it were that important, I thought there might be a live feed on the official site or something. Must not be anything all that important, certainly not the signing of Pedro.

Anybody know anything?

by littlevisigoth on Mar 18, 2009 9:02 AM CDT reply actions

Yeah, big deal.

I feel bad for Boone, but c’mon. Seriously? That was the big news?

by garageinc on Mar 18, 2009 9:18 AM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn't totally discount the BPro rumor about Pedro.

BPro never said that this would be subject of the press conference…we all drew that conclusion from the timing conicidence. And given that Wade has already shown the ability to give head fakes to the local media, BPro still may know something.
