This avoids arbitration. Considering what he was awarded in years past, this may be smart. Plus, the deal lets the Phils cut ties with Howard at a reasonably young age.

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I dunno...not a bad deal for Howard.

He asked for $18 million in arbitration, and at least the average annual value is $18 million (though distributed in increasing amounts per year). With the economy going in the toilet, and possibly staying that way for several years, Howard insulates himself somewhat against that risk. Who knows if an arbitrator would be willing to give him $20 million/year if average salaries haven’t risen for several years, either within baseball or the general economy.
